The Plug, Sheffield
Advantages: Good venue, excellent location
Disadvantages: Long queues, varied nights so each night won't appeal to everyone
...The Plug is located above a block of offices right in the heart of the city centre and since opening its doors a few years ago it has established itself as one of the most popular venues in the city. It is a large club split into three different rooms; cleverly called Live, Earth and Neutral.
Live is the room where most of the live bands play and there is a stage and a room large enough to accommodate around 500 people standing. The other two rooms are usually used to play different styles of music but the design of the place means that it is possible to remove the false walls and create one large room with a capacity of around 1200. I seen a few live acts here including Jarvis Cocker and Glasvegas and on both of these occasions it was just one large room rather than the three smaller ones.
There are different theme nights held...

Gives your holes a damn good plugging.
Advantages: Eliminate most noise, comfortable.
Disadvantages: Do not eliminate Irish mothers.
...and take to the streets. Now, I don't begrudge anyone a party but when the housing estate that backs onto my street have a massive bonfire, hire the kind of sound system that puts Glastonbury to shame and put out a call to arms for the most spectacularly stupid and uninspired DJ ever to lay his hand on the decks ('Alright lads! This is DJ Loyalist Larry from the Orange massive! Mark? Your Ma says you're to have your tea before you go to the bonfire. Right folks, let's burn the pope to the sounds of, erm, Amy Winehouse. Yeah!') and they're still going strong at 3 in the morning, ear plugs are called for.
Aside, though, from the obvious 'helping you to get to sleep' benefits of ear plugs, they do have another, rather vital, use: without ear plugs it's likely that my mother and I would have come to blows long ago. The trick, I have...

Snore Calm Foam Ear Plugs
Advantages: Can be reused making them good value for money. They are comfy and work well.
Disadvantages: Do not eliminate loud noise.
...~~~ INTRODUCTION ~~~
Allow me to paint a picture for you. I have lived in the comfort of my peaceful family home all my life until recently and I have moved out to go to university. Now, I am living in a building full of students with cardboard walls. OK, not quite cardboard but when you are trying to get to sleep it sure sounds like it. Anyway, there is always one - one person who can't talk quietly at one o'clock on the morning when I decide to have an early night. I am almost asleep and then all of a sudden, all I hear is talking. Firstly, I decide to lie and hope she "shuts up" soon. Like that was going to happen. So after a little while, it's time to get up and find those ear plugs! And on that note, brings us on nicely to the review.
~~~ WHAT ARE THEY? ~~~
Basically, these are things that go into the ear to prevent noise...
Fresh and seasonal scent
Advantages: smell great, alternates between two scents
Disadvantages: can work out expensive with refills
...I purchased a Febreze Plug and refresh for my kitchen after growing sick of that 'just been cooking' smell. This is an airfreshener that you plug into your socket and the scent is emitted from the unit. There are two different scents in each refill and the unit switches between the two different scents every 45 minutes. Therefore, you do not get used to the smell and you get two different scents diffusing alternately into your room.
The packaging states that the refill will last around 80 days, and I have found this to be about right. The refills come in a plastic packet and consist of two tubes that slot into the unit, clicking into place so that you are satisfied that it is secure.
When in use, the unit displays a green light above the scent it is currently using, so you can easily see at a glance if the unit is switched on...
An object lesson in not believing others' hype
Advantages: Cheap
Disadvantages: Poor bottom and top end reproduction, a bit too small for my ears, zero isolation
...It's hard to believe I bought the same thing as the previous reviewer. They provide no isolation whatsoever; the supplied foam plugs (2 sets, not 4, and all the same size) are only just large enough to stop the buds from falling out of my ears; finally the sound quality leaves a great deal to be desired. Without equalisation they are simply unusable. With maximum bass and minimum treble they are better balanced, but the bottom end is rather muffled and the top end is utterly fizzy (think frying pan sizzling). The mid-range reproduction is excellent and highly detailed, but that's really a minimum criterion for bothering to listen to anything.
Sure, they're probably better than most players' supplied buds, but I would rather have spent 3 times as much as these cost on something 3 times as good. My old Sennheiser MX500s (the...
It works!
Advantages: Lasts ages, nice scents, don't stop smelling them
Disadvantages: Damage to aquatic environment
...Febreze Plug & Refresh is an air-freshener that alternates the scent it produces every 45 minutes, this stops you from getting used to one smell and not being able to smell it anymore. It also has 'active odour elimination technology' so it won't just cover the bad smells, but get rid of them.
There are about 4 refills available for this plug-in; Blossom & Breeze/Soft Jasmine, Cotton Fresh/Cleansing Rain, Morning Dew/Spring Awakening and a Limited Edition fragrance which just now is Apple Spice/Holly Berries. But if you go to a shop that doesn't sell a lot of these, you'll probably be able to get a Limited Edition one from a while ago. I have the Spring one which is Daisy Field/Blossoms Melody.
The fragrances contain: citronellol, geraniol, hydroxycitronellal, delta damascone, limonene, methylcyclopentadecenone, dimethyl-2...
Sound inside not out!
Advantages: Durable, great sound quality, low price
Disadvantages: The foam earplugs supplied need to be replaced with others for a good fit
...These Koss The Plug earphones are amazing, they isolate outside noise simply by using earplugs which insert into the ear canal and seal out any unwanted noise, as well as preventing any sound from leaking out. This means that you can listen to music at lower volumes and still be able to here it clearly. They block out the majority of noise around you, so you won't hear a baby crying on the train but you won't hear the announcer either!
Before I got these headphones the only way I could clearly hear my music in loud environments such as busses was to turn the volume right up, which is obviously not good for the ears and it can cause distortion not to mention annoying others. Now though I rarely turn the volume up to half way and usually less than that. Fellow travellers are also no longer disturbed by tinny beats emanating from my...
Sink plug in the ears
Advantages: High quality sound
Disadvantages: Not as comfy
...of the vertical position makes it feels heavier than normal.
Also the round shape of the earphones seems to get in the way.
Many earphones come in hybrid silicone rubber ear buds now, so does this. The rubber is suppose to seal in the ears, first for comfort, and secondly to decrease a lot more of external sound. Maybe I am old fashion, but I do prefer the older design of the plastic. The rubber feels like having a sink plug in the ears.
Extra
There are 3 sizes of the ear buds. There is pair of small, medium and large.
An extension cord of 0.9m is included.
The earphone comes with a small carry case for use when the earphones are not in use. Unless you do not mind laying the earphones around, you could keep it safe in the case.
