Rebecca

Advantages: A Hitchcock classic.
Disadvantages: A little wooden.

...***INTRO*** My DVD video of the Hitchcock's classical adaptation of Daphne Du Maurier's celebrated novel REBECCA came free with the Times, because of this you don't get much more than the film, there is some advise on what to expect from the Times in this section in the future. The film directed by Hitchcock was named the Best Picture in the 1940s by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. It was brought to use by ABC Motion Pictures Inc. The film is rated PG parental guidance fit for viewing by persons generally. Some of the scenes may be unsuitable for young children. ***THE STORY*** The story adapted by Philip MacDonald & Michael Hogan includes the cast of: Lawrence Olivier: George Fortescu Maximillian (Maxim de Winter). Joan Fontaine: The second Mis.de Winter. George Sanders: Jack Favell. Whilst on holiday...

Review of Rebecca (DVD)

"I am Mrs. De Winter now!".

Advantages: A pure classic, wonderful, just wonderful!!
Disadvantages: None at all

...INTRODUCTION If I were asked which my favourite film was I would instantly say 'Rebecca' - but it must be the 1940 black and white Hitchcock version. Usually when I watch a film of a book that I have enjoyed I am left disappointed, but I felt that this film stuck very much to the original book and captured the dark, gothic theme well. The film was of course, adapted from the book - Rebecca -by Daphne du Maurier, and was the first American film project for Alfred Hitchcock. The producer was David O. Selznick, who had previously produced the classic Gone with the Wind. This is the only Hitchcock film that won an Academy award (for cinematography and Best Picture) Joan Fontaine was chosen to co-star with Laurence Olivier. Among the other candidates to play Fontaine's role were Loretta Young, Olivia de Havilland (Fontaine...

Last night I watched Rebecca again

Advantages: excellent story
Disadvantages: acting a bit stiff in places

...The film is based on the excellent book by Daphne du Maurier, which was a favourite of mine as a teenager. It was of course directed by Alfred Hitchcock in 1940 and stars Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine (sister of Olivia de Havilland). For those of you who don't know the story, it begins in Monte Carlo where a shy nameless girl is staying in a hotel with her overbearing celebrity-chasing employer. They meet Maxim de Winter, a handsome widower whose wife Rebecca was drowned in a sailing accident the year before. The pair fall in love and marry, but when the honeymoon is over and they return to Manderley, Mr de Winter's grand estate in England, cracks start to appear. Rebecca's memory seems to have a hold over the house and everybody in it, there are reminders of her everywhere and her old room is kept as a shrine exactly as she...

FREE DVDs

Advantages: Free trial, large choice, post included, new realeases
Disadvantages: see review

...I like movies and I like freebies, so when you get offered both in one swoop you?re bound to accept! I used my two week free trial with this company and remained with them for a couple of monthsbefore moving on to try many other companies free trials (and winning a new DVD player on Tesco DVD rental site on their free trial offer). I then had an email from DVDs 365 asking me to go back, and offering me a free DVD if I did so. I had just left Tesco (with my new DVD player) so I chose to go back with them. ∆◊◊ THE SERVICE THEY OFFER ∆◊◊ Basically it?s like going to a video shop and hiring films on DVD, except you don?t pay for each film you chose ? rather a monthly fee for which you can watch as many movies as you can fit in, for us this is usually around 8 a month (2 a week usually weekends...

Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

...At first I wasn't convinced by up-scaling DVD player technology but was persuaded after reading an article in "What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision" magazine. Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied. On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. All the components such as cables, remote and manuals were well presented in their own protective plastic bags, to keep them protected. The player...

365 Money Saving Tips - Rebecca Ash!

Advantages: Some useful tips and websites.
Disadvantages: Patronising in the extreme.

...The New Spend Less Revolution by Rebecca Ash ***What's it all about? *** On my money saving quest, I got his money saving book from the library, which not only promised to save me money, but would give me 365 tips to improve my quality of life too! The book is organised into three chapters: Chapter 1: This considers the problem of why in modern times, people always seem to be struggling for money. Chapter 2: This give the solution; 7 rules to help you live a better life on less money. Chapter 3: This section actually deals with the tactics under 14 sub sections such as shopping, food and drink and travel etc. The book is 157 pages in length and is published by Harriman House Publishing. ***Opinion*** The first thing that amazes me about all these types of book that I pick up, is just how patronising they are to...

Give Me More Rebecca Shaw

Advantages: interesting, a good read, great characters
Disadvantages: not as good as Talk of the Village

...I would be lying if I said this book was as good as the wonderful Talk of the Village, but it is still very good and well worth a few days of your time. Village Matters is the third in this series by Rebecca Shaw, but the second I have read. Next, I am going to read The New Rector, the first in the series, but my third. Phew! Confused yet? Village Matters continues where Talk of the Village left off really. We find out the result of Harriet’s pregnancy, for example, answering that pressing question – with her children being called Fergus, Finlay and Flick, will baby number four be given a name beginning with F? But although it would be preferable to read the books in order, it is not necessary. It is nice catching up with all the characters again, following the events of their lives and seeing the gradual changes to their...

Crème de la crème of fitness DVDs

Advantages: Great exercise, great fun, great results
Disadvantages: Too long for beginners

...out in many fitness DVDs. Finally, there is a good long cool down section. Right at the end of the DVD, there is a section which explains carefully how to do some of the more difficult exercises without harming yourself. The location is great, filmed on beaches, in fields, on top of buildings etc. The music is also fabulous, although of course, this does depend on your age - being a teenager in the 80s means I loved it. However, it is not so overpowering that it takes over the routine, so even if you don't like it, it doesn't really matter. Cindy, of course, looks great, and even now, her clothes don't look dated. If Radu appeared in the DVD more, I think he could be quite annoying, but luckily he keeps in the background most of the time and throws out useful comments as and when necessary. Cindy is good at explaining what she is...

Mrs De Winter, I Presume

Advantages: Unconventional Ghost Story. Great rounded characters
Disadvantages: Pushed upon young people at school before they are always ready

...Rebecca is one of those "classics" you see on reading lists for School Examinations in English Literature. I actually wrote my "RPR" (not actually sure what it stands for, but basically, a book review) on Rebecca when I was 17. At the time, I basically skimmed through the book, read a lot of notes on the story, and churned out an essay with lots of long words, which obviously impressed the examiners, as I "made the grade" and got an A grade. However, when I came back to the book, a few years later, and read it through properly, I realised how much depth there was in the book. I'm now sure that even if I had read it cover to cover at school, I really wouldn't have appreciated it as much as I do now. The book is mostly about the second wife of Maxim De-Winter, a nameless, faceless character, overshadowed by Maxim's first wife...
