One great minidisc recorder

Advantages: Remote control with backlit display; MDLP function which allows you to store 4 CDs on 1 Minidisc; slimline form factor
Disadvantages: No place in case for remote control; no record function on remote

...When I first purchased Sony's MZ-R900 minidisc recorder, I didn't have to even open the manual to use it. The buttons are very simple to use - volume, stop, record on the front of the device; play, search, fast forward and rewind on the edge of the minidisc player on a jog dial. A separate jog dial allows menu navagation. After recording some music onto a blank minidisc, I found that the sound quality of the MZ-R900 is great - there is no loss in quality. I also discovered that I had an optical connection on the back of my Playstation 2, which can also be used to connect the minidisc player to it. The case supplied with the MZ-R900 is very handy, and although I have had the player for a year now, there is not even a fingerprint on it! I have simply used the 'hold' function on the device itself to stop accidental button pressing...

Portable Audio, Portable Recording

Advantages: Sound quality, recording quality, appearance, size (or lack of), light weight
Disadvantages: The remote, clumsy menus, labeling tracks is a hassle

I'm an impatient sod who wants what he wants NOW, or else there'll be plenty of irate phone calls. When I unwrapped it I was amazed as to how small and snazzy looking it is. I don't know the size dimensions, but it's a bit less than the size of my palm. An average palm. When I actually recorded some music on to it, I was amazed. The sound quality is astounding. In normal play mode and Long Play 2 (LP2) mode, you can't hear the difference between it and CD. In LP4 mode, things start getting a little bit hairy. LP? Whaaaat? LP2 mode doubles the size of your minidisc (either 74 mins becomes 148 mins, or 80 mins becomes 160 mins). LP4 mode quadruples the size of you minidisc. Go do the math yourselves. I'm a big fan of the LP2...

A Great MD Player

Advantages: Size and looks; battery life.
Disadvantages: Sound quality; price.

...eliminate skipping completely, although that is just speculation. All I know is that it works. I have taken the MZ-R700 on a run, and as long as I hold it in my hand, it never skips. I tried attaching it to my belt, but the constant jarring began to cause problems after about 5 minutes, so the G-Protection is not foolproof. Sound Sony MD players have a potential for much better sound than other MD players. With MDLP (see below), you have the option to gauge sound quality against amount of data, but if you record on the highest quality, it is better than any other brand of MD players. The sound quality of this model is great, but MD format will always have restrictions on sound quality as long as you have to record it yourself. The sound quality on a Mini Disc will never compare to that of a studio quality CD, but for most people it should be...

...I had this as a present Christmas 2001. I tried to use it boxing day, but as the lead included in the box was optical, I had no way to record so it went back in the box for the next 3 years. This month, I bought a new DVD player, and noticed an optical output on the back and decided to give the mini disc another go. I charged up the battery, plugged the recorder into the DVD player and settled down with the instruction manual. Where do they find the peopld who write these things? Page after page of techno dribble that made no sense to me, then at last, on page 30, there were 7 easy steps to recording explained in plain english. An hour later I has listening to music. ...I'll focus on the many positives first. This is a really well designed, good looking, good quality minidisc player. It's lightweight while still feeling sturdy and durable; the metal casing gives it a real feel of good workmanship. There's features-a-plenty too. There's an optical input for real-time digital recording from a PC/stereo, which doubles up as an analogue line-in, a powered mic socket (used with those little ambient mics - good quality ambient recordings) and an analogue line-out (walkman to stereo etc). Electronically, there is a really useful track grouping function, meaning you can use the LP2 or LP4 setting (quality suffers considerably when using LP4) to record multiple albums on one disc, and then group the tracks so you can easily navigate. A TRIBUTE TO THE BEST PLAYER IN THE WORLD

The MZN707 has LP, or Long play which has saved my life, and my wallet! On an 80min minidisc which costs you about £1.20 i can record up to 70 tracks, yes 70! You will hear people saying, "oh yes, but it reduces the quality of the sound". Never knew Mini Disc was so good

...not to be bulky and very light as well. Battery Life ------------ After having a CD player that took 4 AA batteries and lasted for around 5 CD's I held little hope of one AA battery in this. I'm listening to it now and have listened for some hours of the past few days and it is still reporting full battery life. I believe it will last for up 48 hours with a good battery.
