A lot could've gone wrong in Red Dragon, but the movie exceeds expectations. Replacing the acclaimed Manhunter as an "official" entry in the Hannibal Lecter trilogy, this topnotch thriller--the second adaptation of Thomas Harris's first Lecter novel--returns to the fertile soil of The Silence of the Lambs, serving as both prequel and heir to the legacy of Lecter as portrayed, with mischievous menace, by the great Anthony Hopkins. Familiar faces and locations reappear (along with Lambs screenwriter Ted Tally) as Lecter coaches FBI profiler Will Graham (Edward Norton) in tracking the horrific "Tooth Fairy" killer (Ralph Fiennes), whose transformative killing spree is inspired by a William Blake painting. By dutifully serving Harris's potent material, Tally and director Brett Ratner craft a suspenseful film worthy of its predecessors, bringing Hopkins full circle as one of the cinema's all-time greatest villains. With overtones of Psycho and a superb supporting cast, Red Dragon succeeds against considerable odds. --Jeff Shannon ... less

Ten years after The Silence of the Lambs, Dr. Hannibal "the Cannibal" Lecter (Anthony Hopkins, reprising his Oscar-winning role) is living the good life in Italy, studying art and sipping espresso. FBI agent Clarice Starling (Julianne Moore, replacing Jodie Foster), on the other hand, hasn't had it so good--an outsider from the start, she's now a quiet, moody loner who doesn't play bureaucratic games and suffers for it. A botched drug raid results in her demotion--and a request from Lecter's only living victim, Mason Verger (Gary Oldman, uncredited), for a little Q and A. Little does Clarice realize that the hideously deformed Verger--who, upon suggestion from Dr. Lecter, peeled off his own face--is using her as bait to lure Dr. Lecter out of hiding, quite certain he'll capture the good doctor. Taking the basic plot contraptions from Thomas Harris's baroque novel, Hannibal is so stylistically different from its predecessor that it forces you to take it on its own terms. Director Ridley Scott gives the film a sleek, almost European look that lets you know that, unlike the first film (which was about the quintessentially American Clarice), this movie is all Hannibal. Does it work? Yes--but only up to a point. Scott adeptly sets up an atmosphere of foreboding, but it's all buildup for anticlimax, as Verger's plot for abducting Hannibal (and feeding him to man-eating wild boars) doesn't really deliver the requisite visceral thrills, and the much-ballyhooed climatic dinner sequence between Clarice, Dr. Lecter, and a third unlucky guest wobbles between parody and horror. Hopkins and Moore are both first-rate, but the film contrives to keep them as far apart as possible, when what made Silence so amazing was their interaction. When they do connect it's quite thrilling, but it's unfortunately too little too late. --Mark Englehart ... less

Anthony Hopkins returns as Hannibal Lecter in Red Dragon, a prequel to The Silence of the Lambs and a remake of 1986's Manhunter, Michael Mann's fine film of Thomas Harris's terrific book, in which Brian Cox carved the ham thinner as a more menacing, less hokey cannibal. This film beefs up Lecter's role, opening with a prologue that finds him annoyed by a sour note in his favourite symphony orchestra and then serving the offending flautist at a dinner party before FBI profiler Will Graham (Edward Norton) drops by to apprehend him. Then, we pick up with Lecter in his asylum cell and Graham retired with trauma, only to be brought back together by the crimes of a new madman, the Tooth Fairy. Graham consults Lecter on the case, which means some pointed and familiar conversations, and the film shifts focus from the investigation to the life and troubles of the mad and murderous but also abused and sympathetic Francis Dolarhyde (Ralph Fiennes, with a major tattoo and a harelip). Director Brett Ratner is more like a job-of-work man than the geniuses who have made the earlier movies, and he doesn't quite restrain Hopkins enough. It's also hard not to compare the current cast with Mann's excellent players. Still, Red Dragon is a solid film of great material, with all the sudden shocks and disturbing whispers in places. Also with Harvey Keitel as the FBI boss, Emily Watson as Dolarhyde's blind love interest, Philip Seymour Hoffman as a tabloid sleaze and Mary-Louise Parker in the thankless role of imperilled wife. --Kim Newman ... less

...RED DRAGON (2002)
in brief
FBI agent Will Graham comes out of
retirement to track down the
?Toothfairy? but not without enlisting
the help of Lecter who he nearly died
at the hands of years earlier.
Red Dragon, remake of Michael Mann?s Manhunter and scion of Jonathan Demme?s Silence of the Lambs is sure to do one thing to the extreme: stir viewer interest. It has whipped up much discussion about whether it is better or worse than the films from which it ensues. All of which results in the fact that no critique will be a completely accurate judgement of the film for many viewers.
It is however safe to say that this film is far superior to Hannibal, which ten years subsequent to the lauded classic Silence of The Lambs the makers saw fit to produce. Whilst Hannibal possibly survives the fact that the usually...

A red fiery dragon to play with
Advantages: A fun toy
Disadvantages: none
...My grandson has the Playmobil castle and the Playmobil pirate boat (yes I know he is spoilt) overhearing him talking to a friend we find out he wants the Playmobil dragon. I looked around on the internet and found the price at John Lewis was as good as anywhere else it cost £14,50p and I trust John Lewis and it was free delivery too.
My Grandson is 6 this toy suitable for over 4 year olds.
The Dragon arrived 4 days after we ordered it and I could not resist playing with it for a moment or two.
The dragon we have is a red dragon a green dragon is available too.
This dragon looks fearsome he is 11 inches long 6 inches tall with scales and pointy bits along his back .( not sure of correct name for these .)
The dragon has a fully moveable head arms and legs so he can walk about and frighten people. His jaws move too and he...

Red Dragon: Lecter's Lambs prequel
Advantages: None
Disadvantages: None
...Way back in 1997 I bought a second-hand video of The Silence of the Lambs. It is ten years later and I have not gotten around to actually watching it yet. I have seen the film, but for reasons beyond my understanding I have never felt the urge to watch it again. The latest release of Hannibal Rising led to a friend lending me Red Dragon and now I have got that elusive urge back again.
Before finally watching Jodie Foster as Clarence Starling again, I thought it better to review Red Dragon since it is the prequel to The Silence of the Lambs and I guess the sequel to the latest instalment of everybody?s favourite cannibalistic killer, Dr. Hannibal Lecter.
The film is based upon Thomas Harris? 1981 mystery thriller of the same name, but as to whether it follows the book is a question I cannot answer. The story begins with Will Graham...
