Onions - Red or White
Advantages: Tasty
Disadvantages: make you cry when peeling
...me you have a good sized garden and have a bin for all your vegetable peelings then feed them with the water from the rotting material at hand.
Plant your onion sets, red or white onions depending on your choice, I like red onions as they seem to have a good flavour and add to the colour of a salad or stew.
Plant your sets in March to April and leave them a space of about six inches apart, in rows. Plant the onion so that the tip is just about sticking out of the top of the soil, then just weed , water and watch them grow.
You can pick them as you need them and if you find you have planted to many, then pull them up once they are the size you require and string them together to hang up in the kitchen and use as needed.
You can tell when they are getting ready to pull as the stems begin to bend over, some people put string around...

Do I know my onions ?
Advantages: pretty
Disadvantages: more expensive than white /yellow
...Do I know my onions? Well read on and find out. (Knowing your onions" is an expression used to describe a thorough knowledge of a subject)
There are many varieties that may be classed as onions in the genus Alium. Yellow onions white onions, red onions, leeks and chives too. I have written about those in another review. I realised I had not written about red onions so requested a category, Now I think I have told the world most of what I know about onions...
I am going to write about red onions today. I was eating a red onion for m supper and asked hubby if had known red onions when he was a child , he replied no I had not either in fact until more recent years 15 or something maybe .I am sure they were not as available as they are today.(anyone got any info ?)
The onion is I believe native to North America. The Egyptians...

I rel;ish red onions
Advantages: good with salads and barbeques
Disadvantages: calories
...Tesco red onion relish
I do like some relish with my cold meats or cheese so when I was in Tesco I bought some red onion relish it costs £1.12 for a 220g jar.
Opening the twist lid I smell a faint sweet onion smell.
The relish is a mid brown colour. The relish is a thick gloopy sticky substance with quite a lot of onion strands in it
I had prepared a salad with cold meats for lunch ham and beef I tried some of this relish with it. It is very tasty enhances the flavours of the food. It is not a very strong tasting relish. It is a very subtle onion taste a sweet taste due to it been caramelised.
I have eaten this relish with bread and cheese it tastes good this way. This relish goes well with any food where you might need /want a relish I have tried it in a sausage sandwich the sandwich was livened up by it tasted good.
I...

Onions.
Advantages: Cheap and easy to store.
Disadvantages: Can make you cry.

To cure baldness, rub a mixture of onion juice and honey onto the bald patch. Sadly, there are no clues as to how often, or for how long, the remedy should be used before it works. If you try this at home I shall want to see a photo of the action. If it actually works I shall want a hefty commission for revealing the secret to you!
For culinary use there are dozens of different sizes, shapes and colours of onion available.
The main types used in Britain are known as yellow, brown, red and white.
Yellow and brown are our cheap, everyday cooking onions. Browns have a thicker, flakier skin while the larger smooth skinned types are generally known as Spanish onions, no matter where they were grown. These types are good for all cooking purposes.
Red onions are the prettiest, with shiny red skins. They have a sweeter flavour than other...

Quick Veggie Panini UGO's Deli Cafe Four Cheese & Sweet Red Onion
Advantages: Quick, Hot, Tasty, Cheap
Disadvantages: Can't think of any
...There is a new quick snack / meal that can be prepared easily at home - UGO's deli cafe paninis.
I was in Sainsbury's the other day and noticed them in the sandwich cabinet. The packaging is lovely - not that 'fast foodie' - it is pretty and looks kind of organic.
You don't have to toast them or anything, so no cleaning out the sandwich toaster. All you do is put the panini in the microwave for two minutes!
I tried the Four Cheese & Sweet Red Onion Chutney panini yesterday and it was delicious. Just like you get in a deli. I think the special packaging makes them cook as though they have been toasted.
The cheese ouzes out when it comes out of the microwave. Really delicious - the sweet red onion chutney was great, really nice consistency and sweet but not too sweet.
I am generally rushing about during the day and as...

Know Your Onions!
Advantages: Very Versatile, Easy To Grow
Disadvantages: Make Your Eyes Water
....
As well as the nutritional benefits Onions also have medical properties too and have long been known to help lower levels of Cholstorol in the Blood and lower Blood Pressure. Today the Onion is the second most cultivated crop in the World after the Tomato.
THE VARIETIES
There are so many different varieties that have evolved it is sometimes difficult to imagine that they all have a common ancestor in the Wild Onion plant which is a part of the Lily family.
Onions come in a variety of different colours including, red, yellow, white, and green, each with their own unique flavours, which range from very strong to mildly sweet. Onions can be cooked or eaten raw.
Most Onions can be described as either Salad (or Spring) or Globe Onions. Some of the more common varieties that are used in Britain and Western Europe include...

More than you wanted to know about onions.
Advantages: Cheap, versatile and good for you!
Disadvantages: The smell.
...colours.
* Types of Onion:
There are so many types of onion and technically every member of the Allium family is an onion. For the purposes of this review I will concentrate on the ones most commonly used in cooking.
Spring Onions, (Allium fistulosum) = these are known as scallions, salad onions, green onions and cibies. They are simply a member of the Allium family whose root divides into separate plants instead of forming a bulb. Spring onions are used in salads as the flavour tends to be milder than other onions. The spring onion is used widely in oriental food both as an ingredient and as a garnish. Spring onion can have an outer skin in many colours including coppery red and purple.
Leeks, (Allium ampeloprasum var. porrum) = Instead of forming a bulb like most forms of Allium the leek grows in a long cylinder consisting...

Whitworths dried onions
Advantages: quick no smelly hands
Disadvantages: none
...Whitworths is well known for dried fruit and vegetables - more fruit though I think.
It was 1886 when the business was first formed and it grew rapidly in the 1950's.
Their suppliers now exist in over 80 countries around the world.
Dried onions are a convenient and easy way to add flavour to any dish.
I was made aware of dried onions as a child, my mum used them in dishes such as 'tatty ash' and cottage pie. I asked her why she used them instead of real onions as I remember my nana having onions and pickled onions in bowls of water (not sure why or if I remember correctly). Her reply was that she didn't like onions so that's why she added dried ones, hmmm aren't they still onions but she insisted that they weren't as strong tasting and dissolved in the food so you couldn't taste them (so why put them in?)
As I grew up and got...

Cheese & Onion delights.
Advantages: Great taste, good packet.
Disadvantages: None.
...Walkers crisps are the original and one of the best in my opinion. The crisps are a good size and cut from good potatoes, it is very rare to find a bad crisp in your bag and this is great as I don't have to particularly worry about paying much attention when delving in to the bag and wolfing down a whole packet in 2 minutes flat!
The crisps come in a foil bag (for freshness) with blue colouring (for cheese & onion) and the familiar Walkers logo as well as nutritional information, ingredients and further details on cooking methods, potatoes used and information on Walkers themselves. The bag is very informative and for the purposes of reviewing I had a good old read of the changes that have been made in recent years (less fat and better oil etc) and was astounded by the sheer amount of information that they feel necessary to print...

Tasty Onions!
Advantages: Do not need much watering, Tasty and keeps the vampires away
Disadvantages: Make you cry :-(
...As part of my review on Onions, I will be reviewing the different types of onion separately. These are normal bulb onions, spring onions, pickling onions, European Welsh onions and Oriental bunching onions.
---------------------------------
Bulb Onions
---------------------------------
We grow bulb onions as annuals. The bulbs come in many shapes and may be rounded, flattened, or they may have a long torpedo-like shape. Bulb onions usually have either a brown or yellow colour skin with a white flesh, although some may have red skins with a pinky coloured flesh. Dependent on the variety you choose, the leaves may grow between 15 and 45cm long. You don't have to grow onions to maturity before you can harvest them. Either way, immature or fully matured onions can be eaten cooked or raw. Not all onions will store well, but most...
