A not so rough guide

...When I discovered I was pregnant I wanted some books to read to help me find out what lay ahead. I bought two books, Miriam Stoppard and this one - The Rough Guide to Pregnancy and Birth by Kaz Cooke. I wanted an allround education, so have got a serious book and a not so serious book This book is excellent. It starts with a pregnancy quiz and says to take this before and after you read the book, to see how much you learn, although the quiz is tongue in cheek. The book starts with weekk 1 - getting ready for pregnancy and helps you to think seriously about what you are doing. Week 2 covers ovulation and how to get pregnant. Then basically the book goes from week to week, assuming that you are pregnant. It tells you what to expect from your midwife and hospital appointments. It covers all the issues that women face...

...Almost five months ago now, the good lady and I found out that we were expecting a little bundle of joy. As this was our first, and we had no idea what to expect (outside of the usual advice from friends and family), we thought we'd better invest in a book to guide us through the early stages. I picked Kaz Cooke's book up on Amazon for about £8 (RRP £9.99). The book is just over 400 pages long and is largely written in a first person style, following the author's own pregnancy on a week by week basis. It also adds factual information each week, from advice on potential illnesses to combatting tiredness, morning sickness and (good from my point of view...) the little worries that are bound to crop up in the man's head from time to time such as what partners can do to help. Compact Guide to Croatia

Advantages: Compact size and waterproof cover
Disadvantages: Disjointed and hard to find information.

...size and easy to carry around at slightly smaller than 4x6 inches. The cover has an enchanting photograph of Dubrovnik and the predominant colour of the book cover is blue, in-keeping with all the Berlitz range. The cover has a plasticised finish which is really useful. It keeps the book neat as the cover isn?t prone to getting bent when knocking around in a rucksack, it also doesn?t get marks or stains from coming into contact with sun lotion bottles and the like! Inside the front and rear covers are fold out maps of the main cities (Zagreb, Dubrovnik and Split). I have found with some guides that these get easily ripped or otherwise damaged. With this little book they were made from the same plastic as the covers so they are hardwearing and easy to refer too. The general impression as you flick through the book is of lots of colour...

The book has 768 pages all of which are black and white, but on nice glossy paper. The book comes in paperback format, which is a good thing as it already comes at quite a weight and hardback would make it a different choice of reference. The book has an RRP of £14.99 however I purchased mine for £9.99 from play.com. This great worthwhile investment has given me a book that will entertain me for years. Practical is as you would expect but is particularly good for Tourist Office and Embassy information, Etiquette, Personal Security and Health and has pictures of all banknotes and coins in circulation Travel gives telephone numbers for the major airlines, travelling by train, coach and road. At the very back of the book there is some recommended further reading a glossary and some useful Hindi phrases I regularly used this book before I went and whilst in India for reference purposes and even now, I go back and read a bit every now and again and have therefore given it 5/5 and would definitely recommend it as an ideal book...

Finally, a game guide that you really must buy!

Advantages: Tons of information, Easy to read and find what you need, Factually accurate.
Disadvantages: Some information is repeated, A section on the blocks used in house building would of been nice.
