Reggae Reggae

Advantages: Simple and Yummy
Disadvantages: High Fat.

...I?m a huge fan of cooking but sometimes it?s nice to grab something easy to pop in the oven. You can just take it out of its packaging, there?s no peeling, chopping or cleaning involved. I came across in my local ASDA, in its eye catching box, Birds Eye Chicken Chargrills topped with Reggae Reggae Sauce made by Levi Roots; I?ve tried the other chargrills and really enjoyed them so I thought lets give these ago! Levi Roots is a name some people may know, Levi went onto a television program called Dragon?s Den to advertise his sauces (reggae reggae being one of them). The Dragons liked his idea and you can now buy his sauces in a wide range of shops! To prepare: Place your reggae reggae chicken onto a baking tray pop into a preheated oven 190c, fan assisted ovens 170c for 20 minutes, and make sure you cook it glazed size up. My...

Reggae Reggae Chicken Pieces

Advantages: convenience, versatility, good price at the moment at Asda
Disadvantages: not the best flavour and not as tasty as Reggae Reggae sauce from the bottle

...*Price & Availability* I recently purchased my pack of Birds Eye Chicken Chargrills Reggae Reggae flavour from Asda . They are normally priced at around £1.68 for a pack of two. They are currently priced at £1.00 per pack and also available on a 4 for £3.00 offer, which is fantastic value. These are widely available in many supermarkets and frozen food stores in the frozen aisle. *About The Product* Two pieces of chicken are individually frozen and packaged in a cardboard box. This particular flavour is identifiable by an orange and yellow coloured background, with the usual Birds Eye logo. The chicken pieces are made from farm assured chicken breast and marinated in Levi Roots Reggae Reggae glaze. *Nutritional Bits* Each portion of chicken (one piece) provides 170 calories, 16.0g protein, 4.8g carbs, 9.4g fat...

Barbados Reggae Bus

Advantages: great fun
Disadvantages: avoid 3pm to 5pm

...times. We were not asked to double up, but this does happen apparently with people sitting on each other's knees. Again it was difficult to envisage where exactly those knees would be put! The whole trip the bus was filled with loud reggae music from the impressive sound system (we believe the boom box was somewhere behind our seat). If Bob Marley is for you then so is the ZR bus, with the bonus that you can still hear the music two hours after you get off! The hotel barbeque chef provided some additional insights. The buses are best avoided at peak times between 3 and 5pm, when drivers will go faster and pack in more bodies to boost their income. The police generally pull buses over when they appear too crowded, but more likely because the music is too loud! A not to be missed experience if you proceed with just a little caution...

Reggae Got Soul

Advantages: Pressure Drop
Disadvantages: 3 Songs with ghastly 80's production

...I love Reggae but thankfully for you I am not as obsessive about it as I am about other forms of music, ok maybe I am but then I am more subdued about it. I spied this collection in my local HMV for £5-99 and it somehow slipped into my pocket, good thing too cause it has got two of my all time favorite songs on it "Reggae Got Soul" and Pressure Drop. This CD is part of Islands Reggae Greats series rather obviously from the Title isn?t it and has 12 chunks of chilled out Reggae by Toots and the Maytals on it. Kicking off with "54-46 That?s My Number" a rocksteady number for 1968 based upon Toots time in prison, then moving onto "Reggae Got Soul" it moves into a nice steady relaxed reggae grove and I am happily skanking away on my seat here. "Monkey Man" ups the tempo and I am chanting "Aye Aye Aye" hey I'm Scottish and we are...

Review of Reggae Greats - Toots & The Maytals

Put some music in your food

Advantages: Tastes great (I like hot sauces) and it is very versatile (it can be used with almost anything)
Disadvantages: The bottle doesn't last long. : (

...It was whilst watching Dragon?s Den back in 2007 that I became familiar with the name Reggae Reggae sauce. It was the lyrical and musical talent of the Jamaican reggae singer Levi Root that persuaded two Dragons, Peter Jones and Richard Farleigh, to put in £25,000 each for a 20% stake of the company. The Dragons obviously spotted an excellent investment opportunity that has subsequently come to fruition for them. It is estimated that this brand is now worth millions. Levi Root is no business man, that was clearly evident from his presentation to the Dragons and if it was not for both the financial backing and the consultancy services provided by the Dragons then there is no way that this product would have made it to the market place. So Peter Jones and Richard Farleigh, I salute you both for enabling this excellent sauce to...

Review of Levi Roots' Reggae Reggae Sauce

Reggae Pressure: Boss Sounds '69-70 - buy this album, now!

Advantages: High quality tracks, excellent sleeve notes and photos
Disadvantages: You may have most of the tracks

...Compiled by reggae experts Chris Lane, Noel Hawks and Dave Hendley (people who were actually there in '69 and love and know the music inside out), this CD is an absolute must if you enjoy the classic era of reggae. Even if you already have most of the tunes, this album is up there with other top-quality Trojan releases covering the same period, such as "Dancehall '69" and "Dawning of a New Era", and also includes a few rarities such as George Dekker's "Foey Man" to justify the purchase! The quality never lets up, with classic early reggae instrumentals, rocksteady, DJ cuts and fast skinhead reggae anthems. Just stick it your CD player and it'll never come out! Note: four of the advertised tracks are not on here, namely "Vampire" by The Upsetters, "Swan Lake" by The Cats, "Barbwire" by Nora Dean, and "Rooster" by Tommy McCook. Don't let...

Review of Reggae Pressure (Boss Sounds 1968-70) - Various Artists

A Journey Through 50 Years of Reggae

Advantages: Cost, Range of Tracks overall, Original layout
Disadvantages: Disc 1 length

...The Island Records Anthology Box Set is a must for any Reggae fans. The box set is divided into three eras; 1959-1973 Ska to Reggae, including artists such as Jimmy Cliff, Don Drummond & the Skatellites and Desmond Dekker. This section portrays the upbeat, happy rhythms of Ska changing to Reggae later in this CD. In contrast Disc 2 gives us the 'Party time, roots and dub' of the 70s with Third World, Dillinger, Steel Pulse and Junior Murvin featuring their work. This disc provides a ride through the classic era of reggae at it height of popularity. The Final disc gives a modern take of reggae from 1980-2005 in 'Jamrock' with electronic elements and different melodies from Gregory Isaacs, Dennis Brown and Damian Marley, showing a transition to a more upbeat tempo. In my opinion the structure of the Island Records...

Review of War Ina Babylon (Island Records Reggae Box Set) - Various Artists

reggae music

Advantages: he who helped
Disadvantages: the good die young

...Bob Marley was and still is the best reggae singer of all time. In the beginning when Bob first started out making music, he was known as a rude boy (in other words the higher classed people in Jamaica didn't want to know) Here they had a rasta man who they saw as a bad influence on their children. Rastas were frowned upon. Radio stations were not well pleased to play Bobs music, but, how shall I say it, they didn't have an option and they did play it. The more the music was played the more popular it became and when Bob was recognised in the United kingdom, even the higher classed jamaicans accepted it. Now Bobs music itself can be so relaxing, if you've got the Exodus cassette tape you'll hear songs like "Turn your lights down low" which really relax you, as he says in the song "turn your lights down low and a draw your...

Brummie Reggae

Advantages: Great songs, great music, serious message
Disadvantages: Some of the songs have lost their context

...The legacy of punk has been widely recognised, we can see a direct link between the late seventies anarchic punk music and the more politically based new wave groups and indie guitar groups that followed in the 80's all the way through to today's nu punk bands. Another rather more unusual spin off of the punk era was a popularisation and eventual emergence into the charts of Ska/Reggae. In the early days when live punk bands were playing small venues DJ were filling in the time in between acts not with punk records as none of these new acts had been recorded yet but with reggae and Ska records. This led to an awareness of reggae to a young white audience and it wasn't long before home-grown reggae group were springing up alongside the punk influenced new wave bands. These new British reggae groups tended to be based in parts...

Afro-Reggae: music that changes lives

Advantages: fabulous music, exciting camera work, an uplifting story
Disadvantages: a lack of context, too much about one man

...favelas in Rio. Into this backdrop of organised crime, where drugs and shootings are a part of daily life, it charts the growth of the Afro-Reggae movement, that aims to empower people through music and break the grip of the drugs gangs on favela life. However, as the film continues, it becomes less about the movement, and more about the story of its leader, Anderson Sa. There was a talk given just after the film by a man who had worked with Afro-Reggae and also knew the films' directors, and he explained how, due to events that took place while the documentary was being made, that this switch-over took place. For one thing, Anderson Sa really embodies the movement. He is accepted by the drugs gangs and can go into areas other leader in the movement cannot. There are also some very dramatic goings-on in the film which I don't want to...
