Khushi's Indian Restaurant, Edinburgh
Advantages: Freshly prepared food, good ingredients, BYO
Disadvantages: Acoustics, location
...Khushi's in Victoria Street at the top of the Grassmarket in Edinburgh is a long established, above standard Indian restaurant on the Edinburgh scene. The difference this time is its location.
Claiming to be Edinburgh's first Indian restaurant, opening in 1947 (and I have no reason to doubt this), Khushi's has moved about five times since then and now resides in glorious Bollywood Technicolor at 9 Victoria Street. I should 'fess up now, this is the only incarnation of Khushi's I have experienced; once for lunch and latterly for a Saturday night family celebration. This last occasion forms the basis for this review.
Ten past seven on a very wet Saturday night and the place is heaving, jumping, buzzing with hundreds of dinners already well into their meals. Which is something of a shock after negotiating the deserted grandeur...

khushis of Edinburgh
Advantages: great food, nice atmosphere
Disadvantages: The main restaurant is shut right now
...Khushis claims to be one of the oldest existing Indian restaurants in Scotland, having opened their first restaurant in Edinburgh in 1947, and despite changes in premises has been going strong ever since. They are a Punjabi restaurant and all food is halal and mostly in the Punjabi tradition although there are some dishes from other parts of India. No alcohol is served in the restuarant but bringing along your own beer or wine is both accepted and common and there is no charge.
The main restaurant was in a beautiful old Edinburgh building which had a huge, high ceilinged room inside. All was very tastefully decorated using Indian and Punjabi styles but avoiding the kitsch that is typical of many Indian restaurants. Everything was of high quality, from proper wooden furniture to the cutlery to the decoration. Generally it felt classy but...

Ma Potters in Edinburgh
Advantages: great service and nice atmposphere
Disadvantages: can get busy
...A friend and I met for lunch at Ocean Terminal in Edinburgh. We decided to go to Ma Potters Chargrill which is on the second floor of the centre and is accessible, by escalators, stairs or by the lift.
As you approach the restuarant, which is not behind glass, you get the delicious aromas of the food! MMMMM we thought.
We walked into the pleasantly decorated restaurant and within seconds were seated before even reaching the 'Please wait here to be seated' sign. We got a table right next to the window which overlooks the water and the Royal Ship Britania! It is lovely to sit here and watch the ships sailing on the water or just to look at the Britania.
We had menus placed on the table, so we got settled and started to look at what to have. There is a variet of toasties like cheese and tuna, Paninis with bacon lettuce...

A traditonal Scottish Restaurant
Advantages: Gorgeous food, lovely atmosphere
Disadvantages: expensive, can get busy
...Mackenzies Restaurant is set in a cottage style house and is in the heart of Colinton Village near Redford Barracks. You go right into the village and just opposite the traffic lights, there is a row of shops and MacKenzies is right at the top!
MacKenzies is named after henry Mackenzie who is was the Edinburgh Born writer and Lawer who lived in the cottage next to the restaurant!
The restaurant is a brightly yet dimly lit restaurant! As you go in the door, there is a smallish type Bar from which the drinks are served. You are greeted here by the staff who then show you to your table. There are 2 parts to the restaurant. The front part which has around 7 tables all varying from tables for 2, 3 4, even 8 people. You go through to the back area too. There are around 8 tables through here. The tables are moved regularly to...

Harvester Restaurants
Advantages: Always one close by, quick turn out, children are welcome and catered for.
Disadvantages: Toilets can be quite disturbing, not all dishes taste as good they are described.

Restaurant Reviewed: Stag and Hounds
Winchester Road
Basingstoke
Hampshire
(next to Comet and Home Base)
The Harvester chain of Restaurants have over 2000 outlets across the United Kingdom and owned and operated by Mitchells and Butlers, who claim to be the UK's leading operator of managed pubs, bars and restaurants. Harvester claim to offer healthy eating, drinking and entertainment in one reasonably priced outlet.
**** Parking and Getting a Table *****
As with most of the Harvester's I have visited, there is usually ample free parking at the rear of the establishment. However on Saturday evenings and Sunday lunch times these places are heaving with customers, so avoid the crowds, go early and if possible ring and reserve a table. The Stag and Hounds is no exception but fortunately...

...** I WAS CLEVER, AND TOOK NOTES IN THE NOTEPAD ON MY PHONE!!**
I've always loved italian food, ever since I was a little girl. My grandma used to take me out for day trips to Edinburgh, and we always managed to find an italian restaurant for a nice tea. Now Edinburgh is heaving full of different restaurants, chinese, brittish, french, thai and so on, however italian is probably still my number one.
I have tried various italian restaurants in Edinburgh, however the one I visited last was the best i've ever been too, and I couldn't let it go unreviewed.
Three days ago three of my relatives flew in from Canada, ready for a fun filled week with us. They arrived at 3pm in the afternoon, and since they had been travelling during lunch time, they hadn't managed to find something to eat, so when they arrived at our house, they were...

The Patio - Hanover St Edinburgh - Warning!
Advantages: Good location
Disadvantages: Very ifffy service mentality
...We ate at The Patio, Hanover St, Edinburgh on Saturday.
A strange long, thin restaurant interior, and a décor that was in need of a serious makeover some years ago, but didn't get it.
We waited too long for drinks, and finally the order to be taken.
Having waited, we asked twice for an update on when our food would arrive. Especially when others were arriving after us, and getting their food quickly.
Finally ... the garlic bread was disappointingly simply sliced crusty bread with thinly spread oiling butter - and no hint of garlic.
My pizza (specially ordered as extra hot version of their special "The Patio Pizza") ... was so perfectly round, with a perfectly rounded crust, that it looked suspiciously like frozen dough ... drowned in over the top mozzarella, and little else - very disappointing!
My wife ordered...

Edinburgh - it Stinks
Advantages: Lots to see and do, the city contains some stunning buildings
Disadvantages: The roadworks, the tramworks, the bagpipes!
...I have been living in Edinburgh now for almost five years, and in that time I have gone from loving the place to desperately wanting to leave. I am, however, marooned here for the foreseeable future, due to a combination of factors, the most obvious one being sheer bad luck.
We moved to Edinburgh from London for several reasons, the main one being my husband was working in the city at the time. Our daughter was due to leave her special school and the mainstream options available to her in London weren?t great. Actually, that?s being generous ? they were hopeless.
For several years Edinburgh had been portrayed as the best place to live for quality of life, and my husband, having worked in the city in the past, was ready for a change ? so we made the decision to move 400 miles north.
So what?s right with Edinburgh?
The thing...

Exotica in Edinburgh
Advantages: Fun day out for all the family
Disadvantages: Can be depressing to see the animals cooped up, steep hill
...I recently visited my local zoo, which is Edinburgh Zoo, at my daughter's request. She has been here before, firstly with school about four years ago, and secondly with just her dad a few months before he died. The last time I was at the zoo was when I was younger than my daughter is now, on a school trip, which is pathetic really considering I live so near the place.
I have to admit however that I am not a huge fan of zoos. I have been to many over the years and while I appreciate the role they play in conservation, I have my doubts about the wisdom of keeping animals in captivity for humans to peer at.
My daughter, however, has no such qualms. For her the zoo offers her the chance to see animals without having to get close to them, something she loves and she has always enjoyed her trips to this zoo.
So off we went to the zoo...

Shopping @ Edinburgh Waterfront
Advantages: Free Parking, Layout,
Disadvantages: None so far
...Back in 2001 this lovely decorated card dropped through the door. "Edinburgh waterfront welcomes you to Ocean Terminal. Being curious we packed the children in to the car and headed down to ocean terminal for the first time. Sit back and enjoy my review
What is Ocean Terminal
Ocean Terminal is a large (half million sqft) shopping centre set on the lovely up and coming waterfront near to Leith in Edinburgh. Set over three floors, ocean terminal offers a wide variety of shops, restaurants, and bars not to forget about the 12 screen cinema. It's all under one roof at Ocean Terminal.
How to get there
Thanks to LRT (local bus company) Ocean terminal is served very well with buses, you will see buses leaving Ocean terminal every 5 mins at peak times. Buses will take to you princess street and other surrounding areas to...
