Even Napoleon Could Not Stay Away

Advantages: Better for families than much of the Cote d'Azur
Disadvantages: Gets very crowded and is a bit over developed

...the best option. Antibes boasts some excellent hotels amongst them the renowned Eden Rock often voted the best hotel in the world, unfortunately its prices match its deserved reputation. Much more affordable accommodation will be found at Juan Les Pins. A quick search on the internet will give you plenty of choice. Prices vary dramatically throughout the year and if you can avoid July and August you will save a great deal of money and have a lot more space on the beach. The beaches of Juan les Pins are better than at Antibes itself and are good sand unlike the large pebbles of Nice. There are public beaches but as is usual along this coast most are private and you will pay for a sun bed and have access to the bar and restaurant with toilet and shower facilities provided. You can expect to be charged between ten and thirty Euros depending...

Dine at The Turtle Restaurant

Advantages: Excellent food, service and atmosphere
Disadvantages: No outdoor seating; upstairs toilets

...Before visiting Honfleur, Normandy, for the day I looked at the Ciao France website to see if there were any reviews of restaurants in the town. All I found, however, was a piece of advice that recommended avoiding the restaurants on the waterfront, which it described as 'tourist traps', and seeking out a restaurant in one of the side streets. My 'Rough Guide to France' was too heavy to take along, so I copied out the names and addresses of one or two restaurants that it listed. Unsurprisingly for a fishing port, they all seemed to specialise in seafood. We spent about an hour and a half wandering around Honfleur and were amazed at the number of restaurants there are; you are certainly spoilt for choice, and if a bucket of mussels floats your boat you are in for a treat. We stopped and looked at one or two menus, including that of La...

Hotel Don Juan,Magaluf - A pleasant suprise!

Advantages: Well located, friendly staff, spacious rooms
Disadvantages: Evening meal could've been better

...It's been a while since I wrote a review and I had said to myself that I would wait until after my holiday to put fingers to keyboard once again. After sunning ourselves for 2 weeks in Magaluf, Majorca it's taken me a while to get back into the swing of everyday life in Blighty but I think I'm almost there (worst luck). Well it's been almost a week since we got back and so I thought it was about time I put my review writing cap on once again and what better to review than the hotel we stayed in on our holiday. The Don Juan Hotel is part of the Hoteles Saint Michel group and is a 3 star hotel situated in the quieter area of Magaluf. It was built in 1972 and extensively renovated during the winter of 1999 and has 182 rooms in total (161 twins and 21 single) which stretch over seven floors. We had booked our 10 day holiday through...

Rey Juan Carlos

Advantages: Located within the business district and ideal for airport
Disadvantages: Nightlife is a good taxi ride away

..., particularly in the evening really grabs my attention and gives me a sense of warmth. The facilities and service are first class, and the gastronomy is a definite must, even if you have been recommended some good seafood restaurants by the harbour. If you are visiting Barcelona for business or for pleasure, the Rey Juan Carlos must feature highly on your list of hotels. This was my 3rd stay at the hotel over the last 5 years and I can state with confidence that the experience has been equally as comfortable each time, with the quality of the product maintained throughout that period. ~~~~~~ Location ~~~~~~ The hotel is located at the top of the Avenue Diagonal, which geographically speaking is actually the south west side of Barcelona. The area is both a Commercial and Educational area, with many of Barcelona's multinational companies...

Diamond review  Harvester Restaurants

Advantages: Always one close by, quick turn out, children are welcome and catered for.
Disadvantages: Toilets can be quite disturbing, not all dishes taste as good they are described.

...Harvester Restaurants Restaurant Reviewed: Stag and Hounds Winchester Road Basingstoke Hampshire (next to Comet and Home Base) The Harvester chain of Restaurants have over 2000 outlets across the United Kingdom and owned and operated by Mitchells and Butlers, who claim to be the UK's leading operator of managed pubs, bars and restaurants. Harvester claim to offer healthy eating, drinking and entertainment in one reasonably priced outlet. **** Parking and Getting a Table ***** As with most of the Harvester's I have visited, there is usually ample free parking at the rear of the establishment. However on Saturday evenings and Sunday lunch times these places are heaving with customers, so avoid the crowds, go early and if possible ring and reserve a table. The Stag and Hounds is no exception but fortunately...

DON JUAN HOTEL, MAGALUF

Advantages: close to beach
Disadvantages: Can be noisy at night

...(internal calls are free so take your phone off the hook to avoid drunken unwanted calls in the wee hours of the morning!!!!), satellite television, and a balcony. The room was quite spacious compared to the normal size of spanish rooms. The maid changed the towels as required and changed the bed linen once a week. **********FACILITIES*********** The facilities available were a 24 hour reception desk with currency exchange services. THankfully there was air conditioning in the buffet style restaurant. There waspublic internet terminals with WiFi access in selected areas of the hotel, although I did not avail of this service. A plus was the fact that they do have luggage and courtesy rooms for late departures. They also have a laundry service, a games room and both lounge and pool bars. **********POOL**************** There is a large...

Growing up in Wartime France

Advantages: Excellent direction; very moving
Disadvantages: Perhaps a little slow at first

...It is January 1944 and Julien Quentin (Gaspard Manesse), a young teenage boy, is reluctantly returning to his Catholic boarding school in rural France. The bed next to his in the dormitory is allocated to a new pupil known as Jean Bonnet (Raphael Fejto). Julien has until then been the brightest student of his class, but Jean provides him with strong competition. Their relationship is initially full of rivalry, but it gradually grows stronger. One night, Julien discovers that Jean is actually a Jew whose real surname is Keppelstein; he is in fact one of three Jewish boys who have been offered a hiding place at the school by Father Jean (Philippe Morier-Genoud), since the school was supposedly immune from searches by the Nazis. Written and directed by Louis Malle in 1987, 'Au Revoir Les Enfants' ('Goodbye Children') is basically auto...

Epiphone Les Paul Studio, a little too evil?

Advantages: Build quality, Bridge pickup, Hardware
Disadvantages: Weight, Finish

...Firstly i'd like to say that for me this guitar looks rather drab and boring, as it is so plain and all in black. There is no contrast in colour and doesn't really stand out. But with that now said, i will go onto the other aspects. It has the standard les paul fittings, which are sturdy and reliable, and the tuners that hold their tuning very well. The pickups are high output and sound very heavy, which is ideal for hard rock and metal. The neck pickup sounds a bit too heavy and doesn't sound great with only light distortion but sound good clean. The guitar is quite heavy in weight and can make my shoulder ache if i've had it on the strap too long. But the weight is only due to the mahogany it is made from. It is buit very well and is also sturdy. The fitted neck is very nice and adds to the build quility....

Best Western Le Donjon Les Ramparts certainly not Best Value

Advantages: None
Disadvantages: Split into different buildings, expensive.

...Travelling through France to northern Spain we decided to spend a night at the medieval city of Carcassonne in the Languedoc area. First Impressions From a distance the walled city looked stunning, but to be perfectly honest that was the best bit. For those of you that have visited and enjoyed your stay I will apologise now but we absolutely hated it, if I had wanted a theme park I would have gone to Disneyland! The city was full of the most horrendous ?tat? gift shops selling everything from fake suits of armour to tee-shirts with knights on them and really awful ?attractions? (I use this word loosely) such as the haunted manor and weapon museum. It was a little better at night when the shops had closed and the restaurants opened, however, teenagers staying around the city became very bored, got very drunk and succeeded in...

Diamond review  "Lille De France" - Geddit?

Advantages: Near London by train, cosmopolitan feel, excellent transport connections, eating out, plenty to see
Disadvantages: Dog poo

...I?ve now been to Lille three times in the past year or so, each previous time, merely for the day. Only over the last weekend did we stay overnight. Why Lille? Well, rather like the reason dogs lick their naughty bits, it?s because we can. Lille is the first main stop in France on the Eurostar/TGV route from the Channel Tunnel ? yes, I know you could get a train that stops at Calais (Fréthun), but that?s like getting out at Bristol Parkway and expecting to be in Bristol! Gare Lille-Europe arrives outside your train window 1 hour and 40 minutes after London Waterloo International disappears. Stage 1 of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL), means that we now get to hurtle through Kent at 186 M.P.H. before slowing to a mere 100 M.P.H. to shrug off the 32 miles of tunnel in a mere 20 minutes. Doing 'a ton' MORE than even the over...
