Diamond review  Hum-BLED by the perfect Alpine setting

Advantages: Beautful scenery, kremsnita, plenty for children and adults
Disadvantages: Crowds and traffic on busy days, not cheapest food, lack of self-catering accommodation

...Bled is the number 1 tourist destination in Slovenia, and it is not hard to see why. Slovenia is the northernmost republic of what used to be Yugoslavia, sharing borders with Italy and Austria in the Alps, and Hungary to the east and Croatia to the South. Although just a very small town with a population of 10,000, its Alpine location and beauty draw visitors from all over, to see its lake, its castle, play golf and sample its hospitality. = HISTORY = The first mention of history was in 1004 when the Holy Roman Emperor, Henry II awarded it to the Bishop of Brixen. The 1000 years of Bled logo can be seen throughout the town, as part of a big tourism campaign three years ago. In the nineteenth century, Bled became known as a health resort, and the grandeur of some of its buildings gives an indication of its clientele. Tito...

Review of Lake Bled (Slovenia)

Heaven IS a place on earth!

Advantages: Possibly the most beautiful spot in Slovenia
Disadvantages: Apparently very busy in summer and prices rise accordingly

...resort for wealthy Europeans, exploiting the thermal springs. It quickly took off and even the Yugoslav royal family summered at Bled. The lake itself is quite small, measuring 2 kilometres by 1380 metres, so an easy walk around it only takes about an hour. However, with breaks to stop a while to take in it's beauty and more breaks for liquid refreshment, it can fully occupy a whole morning or afternoon. There is plenty of interest as you circle the lake - pretty houses, swans and scores of handsomely coloured ducks and a lovely canopy of trees overhead. In Mlino, a hamlet on the south shore, there are a couple of cafes and bars and a small supermarket if you rather pick up a picnic and eat beside the water. Further round on the western shore there is a bar and restaurant at the Zaka Regatta Centre with indoor and outdoor tables. Even in...

Chilli - it's hot!

Advantages: Good value, excellent pizzas, wide ranging menu
Disadvantages: Difficult to read menu

...While a restaurant with a really extensive and varied menu can cause some raised eyebrows ? Are they spreading themselves too thin? Can they be good at everything? ? it can also be a godsend; recently in Bled we needed to find a restaurant to please a group of four people that included a pair of unadventurous parents, one of whom couldn?t walk very far in search of dinner. As we approached Chilli, my initial reaction was that this was a restaurant we wouldn?t be eating at - the illuminated red chilli pepper did not bode well. However, a quick glance at the board outside showed that the menu was quite extensive and covered much more than just Mexican food. As it was a warm evening we chose a table outside and within a minute or two our waitress brought some menus. The first hurdle was that the font used in the menus was really...

Bled-dy Fantastic

Advantages: beautiful, beautiful, beautiful..
Disadvantages: it might be a while till i make it back..

...Right in the middle of Lake Bled is tiny Bled island. And when I say tiny, i mean allow yourself around 5 minutes to walk the whole island! Bled island is part of the reason the area around Lake Bled is so pretty and picturesque. Bled is a gorgeous location situated in the Julian Alps with a castle perched above the lake and the little island in the middle. To get to Bled Island you can grab a water taxi from the side of the lake (we got ours in front of the tourist information place). You can share your water taxi with others to save cash (just wait around where the boats are), but as we were there in winter there was no one around to share with so we just took our own over, for around 20 euros. The taxi will ferry you to the island and then wait for you to come back usually allowing you an hour which includes the ten minute...

Review of Bled Island, Bled

Do You See What I See?

Advantages: Great Views, Feels Like Dreamland, Easy to get to
Disadvantages: Expensive, Can See Everything in a Day

.../cafe selling food, drink and ice lollies to keep you cool. While walking around there are many little trails to follow which lead in many different directions, although we did not take any of them, if you are staying for a few days then it might be nice to see where some of these go, we discovered that a short bus ride away is a waterfall in a clearing which looked nice, that might be something to look into. There are plenty of other things to do in Bled, there are a few shops that you can visit if that is your thing, each one selling souvenirs of Slovenia and Bled in general, look out for the great postcards showing the island from above surrounded by water. There are bars and restaurants, although not that many by the lake which sells various dishes from all over the world so you should get something you like. If you want you own perfect...

A Lodge on the Lake

Advantages: Fantstic service and lovely lodges
Disadvantages: You have to go home !!!

... PINE LAKE CARNFORTH, LANCASHIRe I am very lucky as I live only 20 minutes away from this lovely location in my native county of Lancashire - UK. Pine Lake is part of Diamond Resort, a leisure company of whom I am a member, so I use the facilities here a lot - my grandkids love it!! Pine Lake is a complex a series of wooden lodges by the side of Pine Lake in Carnforth, Lancashire . It is three miles from Morecambe Bay and 19 miles from Preston and very close to the beautiful Lake District. There is wonderful restaurant, an indoor pool( with spa, sauna, steam room and children's pool) , games room with arcade type games, table tennis, pool and air hockey, tennis court, children's club, childrens indoor ( with soft play area) and outdoor play area, small shop, a health club, internet availability and a marina...

Eden Lake

Advantages: Powerful horror, genuinely scary
Disadvantages: Sickening to watch

...It took me at least a week to come to a semi conclusion of how I felt about Eden Lake; it took me a few days at least to get over the initial shock and emotion felt by watching it. And I have to say that the film I am about to review is like nothing I have seen before. Eden Lake, is an English film directed by a man called James Watkins, I had never heard of the film nor the director and I was not that enthusiastic about watching it, but after a day moping about alone I wanted something scary to watch and it was in the horror section of my local movie shop at a price of Ł4 so I thought I would give it a watch. Sometimes I just crave something to give me a bit of a scare. Horror films which are genuinely scary are few and far between and it is almost unheard of to find one which gives you more than a few jumps and actually offers...

Floating on Lake Titicaca

Advantages: Being invited to visit authentic local people
Disadvantages: Our visits could spoil the Lake for the local people in time

...Puno and the Uros Islands Lake Titicaca is 3,812 m above sea level which makes it the highest commercially navigable lake in the world. It is also the largest lake in South America in volume of water and the deepest point of the lake measures 284m . It lies in both Peru and Bolivia and Lake Titicaca is fed by rainfall and from glaciers on the Andean Sierras. Five major river systems also feed into Lake Titicaca; these are the Ramis, Coata, Ilave, Huancané, and Suchez rivers. Lake Titicaca is one of the nominees for the New Seven Wonders, natural wonders. If you haven't heard of the New 7 Wonders website the go and have a look. They have recently come up with a New 7 wonders list of man made wonders and are now tasking nomination for the natural wonders - Lake Titicaca is one of these. After they shortlist you can then vote for your 7...

Diamond review  Harvester Restaurants

Advantages: Always one close by, quick turn out, children are welcome and catered for.
Disadvantages: Toilets can be quite disturbing, not all dishes taste as good they are described.

...Harvester Restaurants Restaurant Reviewed: Stag and Hounds Winchester Road Basingstoke Hampshire (next to Comet and Home Base) The Harvester chain of Restaurants have over 2000 outlets across the United Kingdom and owned and operated by Mitchells and Butlers, who claim to be the UK's leading operator of managed pubs, bars and restaurants. Harvester claim to offer healthy eating, drinking and entertainment in one reasonably priced outlet. **** Parking and Getting a Table ***** As with most of the Harvester's I have visited, there is usually ample free parking at the rear of the establishment. However on Saturday evenings and Sunday lunch times these places are heaving with customers, so avoid the crowds, go early and if possible ring and reserve a table. The Stag and Hounds is no exception but fortunately...

The Lakes: Quiet and Serene?

Advantages: Brilliant acting, great storylines and scripts
Disadvantages: Lack of extras on the DVD lets this set down

...As well as being one of the most beautiful areas of the UK, 'The Lakes' is a 14 part TV drama series, originally broadcasted in 1997 on BBC1. Series 1 consisted of four of these episodes, the first lasting 90 minutes, the next three 50 minutes. HOW DID I FIND THIS SERIES? As many of you may have guessed, I'm a huge fan of British actor, John Simm. I have found that anything with him in is worth the watch and definitely worth paying the money out for (especially if it is a Christmas prezzie from your parents!). This was arguably the programme that put Simm on the map too; up until that point, he'd had a few minor roles in established TV shows such as 'Heartbeat' and had been in cult like movies such as 'Boston Kickout' but never had he been in such an extensive BBC production. Away from the obvious attraction of John Simm, what I...
