Hotel Cabin, Reykjavik

Advantages: great location and value for money
Disadvantages: size of rooms

...I stayed in this hotel during easter 2008. I took a party of 30 pupils on a school trip to Iceland. This hotel is conveniently located with easy drop of for coaches. The reception staff were very helpful at all times regarding any matters. The rooms are cosy to say the lest, probably the smallest rooms i have come across however we were not there to sample the rooms. Bathrooms were clean and of an acceptable size. Views from rooms varied gratefull, either a view on a corridor, out onto other buildings or a stunning view if you are at front of building. Close walking distance to pizza hut, restaurants and there is a petrol station with shop across the road including a subway restaurant. Location for whale watchibng was also very close. The breakfast was simple but adequate. Dinners were the same, packed lunches made for us were large...

A 21st Century hotel in historic Reykjavik

Advantages: In the heart of traditional Reykjavic
Disadvantages: none

...Reykjavik. The hotel also comprises of a bar/coffee lounge with soft sofas as well as the standard tables and chairs. This was a pleasant place to visit after a hard day of sight seeing. Overall we were extremely pleased and relieved to find this hotel was of a good standard because we could find very little independent information about it before our visit . We hope you enjoy it too....

Hotel Cabin: Never Again

Advantages: The lift was quite close to our room, so we could get out of there nice and quickly.
Disadvantages: Food poisoning, no sleep, unhelpful staff.

...Worst hotel experience ever. Basic is one thing, but the staff were unhelpful at best, invisible when you needed them, the food gave both inhabitants of our room violent upset stomachs, and the incessant noise throughout the night, caused by some shockingly foul antics in the corridor behind our room. This went on all night (I was glad of our 4am departure), and the staff (there must have been some somewhere, even if I couldn't see them) did nothing about, despite the enormous disruption and anxiety this caused to many of our party. There was not a single aspect of that stay which I found to be satisfactory. The rude antics that went on were of particular concern, as these could have been seriously upsetting to families, young children, elderly guests or really anyone who is an anxious type. As it was, the mature and responsible school...

Review of Hotel Cabin, Reykjavik

smelly hotel!

Advantages: cheap, close to city centre
Disadvantages: no bathroom in room,

.... An upside to this hotel is that the price included breakfast. The food is very expensive in Iceland so this was helpful - A sandwich, Oreo cookies, banana and juice made for an interesting breakfast but at least the cookies were good for throwing in the backpack for a mid morning snack. Bear in mind that most Reykjavik hotels rates will include a breakfast and usually this is a buffet breakfast (unlike ours which was made the night before and put in our in room fridge while we were out.) To sum it up - If you're on a budget this place makes a fairly good base to see the sights of Reykjavik and the surrounding areas. The tours are also pretty expensive (upwards of £35) so might be a good idea to spend less on the accommodation and more on the tours as they are well worth it. Also - most people spend their time seeing the sights which are...

Review of Hotel Floki, Reykjavik

Star Trek comes to Reykjavik

Advantages: Central location, superb use of technology, and not expensive either
Disadvantages: None that I can think of

...The Settlement Exhibition is a relatively new addition to the cultural landscape in Reykjavik, having only been opened to the public for a couple of years. It is situated on Aðalstræti in the centre of the oldest district of the city, and the remains of the Viking settlement that form the focus of the display were uncovered during construction work for a new hotel in 2003. Public interest in the discovery was so great that the government decided to preserve the integrity of the site and the archaeological research conducted there has provided a wealth of information about how the earliest settlers lived, all of which has been carefully preserved and beautifully presented in this fascinating museum. The centrepiece of the exhibition is the site of a Viking longhouse that was inhabited from the early 10th century, and to the north...

Reykjavik: Cold Weather and Hot Springs

Advantages: Beatiful, crowd-free, unspoiled
Disadvantages: Cold (just wrap up warm) and expensive

...Intro ~~~~ I have just returned from a family holiday in Reykjavik, the most northerly capital in the world. No one in our family is suited to the heat and we are not drawn by beach holidays. We were attracted by the reported beauty of the city and Iceland promised adventure with its volcanic landscape, geysers and waterfalls, puffins and whales. We were not disappointed and we left keen to return and explore more of this beautiful country. The City ~~~~~~~ Perched on the edge of the Arctic Circle, Reykjavik sits on the south west coast of Iceland, oh so many miles north of Scotland in the north Atlantic Ocean. It is rapidly increasing in size, mostly from people migrating here from other parts of the country. Iceland is very sparsely populated, two thirds of a total of only 300,000 Icelanders live in the Reykjavik area. This was...

Review of Reykjavik (Iceland)

It's oh so quiet (sometimes) - sssh sssh

Advantages: Friendly service. Good sized rooms with comfortable bed.
Disadvantages: Brutalist architecture. Flat, small towels. Expensive sancks / drinks.

...Hotel Bjork is one of the five Kea Hotels in Iceland and our choice for accommodation on our recent holiday to Reykjavik. Why our choice? Well according to all the available brochures and web sites, "If you are looking for a centrally located hotel and would still prefer peace and privacy, Hotel Bjork is the right choice for you." Perfect! Just what we were looking for! So was Hotel Bjork the right choice? Well pretty much - apart from a few minor niggles, it suited our needs well with, in the main, a friendly and efficient service. ~~First Impressions~~ Similar to many other buildings in Reykjavik, Hotel Bjork is of a brutalist architectural design constructed of poured concrete. Like most brutalist buildings built in the 70s, the hotel's façade had somewhat discoloured to a pale grey in parts making it look a little tired...

Northern Nights

Advantages: Central location, Clean and comfortable, Friendly staff all speak excellent English
Disadvantages: Local bars can get quite noisy, especially at weekends

...Accommodation arrangements in Reykjavik are not all that easy, considering that it is a capital city. As it is only recently begun to open up to tourism on a big scale, the city is rather lacking the large faceless chain hotels that have been spawned in virtually every other major city where it is even remotely likely that tourists will be attracted. Indeed, the only chain hotel I recall noticing during my stay in Reykjavik was the Radisson SAS ? which seemed very popular with American visitors, although it was quite out of the way. This is of course not necessarily a bad thing (it does stop Reykjavik feeling like every other European city) but it also means that you need to go for an independent hotel, which in my experience can be a decidedly hit and miss affair. Most hotels in the city are small businesses, often family run...

A blip in Radisson's excellent track record

Advantages: Fantastic location
Disadvantages: Expensive, bland

...This reivew is based on a three night stay at this centrally located Radisson hotel in downtown Reykjavik. My stay was in August 2006 - let me know if you think things have changed! I have stayed in many Radisson branded hotels before and on the whole, they are fantastic. In fact, I owe the brand a few 5 star reviews on Ciao. I therefore had no hesitations in booking this nice looking, but very expensive, hotel for my short stay in Reykjavik, Iceland. WHY IS IT CALLED 1919? I'm sure you guessed correctly, yes the building was built in 1919. It used to be offices (for a shipping company) and was only converted into this hotel within the past few years. Once you step inside, the inside is decked out with a modern trendy look, incorporating some of the old featues (including a rather grand staircase). HOTEL FEATURES...

Iceland, Iceland, King of Countries

Advantages: Friendly, Clean, Comfortable
Disadvantages: Not cheap, Located in the Busines District

...In September 2006 my boyfriend took me on a surprise holiday. We got up at 3am and headed off to the airport and I still had no idea where we were heading. With this in mind I?d packed clothes for every occasion. My boyfriend had told me I?d probably need a jumper, but didn?t go into much more detail. So when I got to the airport he handed me a package and when I unwrapped it I saw a guidebook to Iceland in my hands! I was sooo excited! I had an amazing time in Iceland and I thought I?d review the hotel we stayed in as I?ve read a few reviews online since and they seem rather unduly negative to me. ~~First Impressions~~ When we arrived in Iceland we caught a bus Reykjavik and they delivered us right to the door of our hotel. They asked where we were staying and my boyfriend said Park Inn Iceland ? we were soon corrected that...
