The Alternative to High Definition Wii
Advantages: Better quality picture
Disadvantages: A little on the expensive side
...If, like me, you don't have a High Definition TV, and you want a little bit more graphical juice out of your Wii, then I highly recomend you invest in a Nintendo Wii RGB Cable.
This cable, (yep, that's all it is), which works in exactly the same way as a SCART cable (it plugs into the same hole at the back of the Wii, and into a SCART socket on your TV) is very very good indeed. I first noticed a difference as soon as I loaded up my Wii. The main interface was much much clearer, the words were a lot easier to recognise, and everything was so much more brighter. The colours on the different channels, especially the Virtual Console Game channels looked so vivid, I couldn't believe I made do with a SCART cable for so long!
I decided, that to see exactly how good the cable was, I'd play all of my Wii games, and see how they've changed...

An essential buy for any Wii owner.
Advantages: Better picture quality, easy to install
Disadvantages: Expensive, not supported by all TVs
...As I have a TV that doesn't support Component Cables, I decided to splash out on Nintendo's RGB cable to see if I could get improved visuals on my Wii.
The cable is very simple to install, as it plugs into the same slot on the Wii as the standard cables, and into the SCART socket on the back of your TV.
As soon as I loaded up my Wii I could immediately see the difference.
Everything was brighter and clearer than before - the various channel icons on the main screen looked so much more vibrant and colourful, and everything seemed much sharper and more prominent, especially noticeable when looking at on screen text.
I realised, however, that the new visuals would be worthless if they weren't noticeable in the games, so next I decided to load up some of my games and see if they had improved too.
First of all I decided to try...

A scart is a scart is a scart
Advantages: Quality fully wired scart cable
Disadvantages: bulky connector head
...There are many cheap scart leads and many expensive scart leads. The cheapest may not be fully wired and hence not pass on all signals such as AV switching and screen mode through to the TV, and the most expensive may not appear to give value for money.
The Ixos XFT02 is their entry level scart lead costing between £13-£20 depending where you look. The scart is fully wired, is constructed with oxygen free copper conductors with gold plated connectors, and is well shielded against emf interference. The scart does exactly what it is meant too without being too expensive for non-enthusiasts. These aren't the cheapest of scarts, but are at the low end of quality leads which are designed for signal performance rather than price.
The only drawback is that the connector head is quite bulky with the side-exiting lead, so this may foul...

A game console for families and has serious potential
Advantages: easy game play, lots of onine games to download, wireless internet conectivity
Disadvantages: not enough storage space (need a lot of 2GB SD cards to store the downloaded games).
...), an RGB cable for audio and video connection to the TV + a SCART adaptor as well. How thoughtful! Why don't they throw in another component cable with a phono sockets to stereo jack adaptor as well (see my other review)? Then the Wii Sport Resort game with the latest module Wii Motion plus + its Skin as well.
Easy of installation?
Very easy indeed. More or less plug everything in and insert the game DVD-ROM and play. Almost! You do need to put the sensor bar properly align with the TV ideally right in the middle (on top of the TV or below it). Then avoid direct sunlight and any other infra-red sources such as gas fire or strong spot lights that may interfere with the sensor.
Internet connectivity
For internet connection it may be tricky if you have not got a wireless router. If you haven't, you have to buy an adpator...

Good but not good enough
Advantages: Improve picture quality for most games
Disadvantages: some glitch still exist
...). At 480p mode, there appears to be some kind communication issue causing this reminder instruction to fluctuate like having a bad TV reception and then it's back to normal for the Wii Sport Resort welcome screen (never happen in the 560i mode).
Also, in the bowling game when you have a strike or spare, the replay is slow, not instant like at 560i mode. Perhaps it is my TV? Or, I have a problem with my cable? Everything is fine at 560i mode - either using this cable or the original RGB cable.
Extra advantage for using this cable:
Since the original RGB cable will occupy a RGB/Scart slot, it will cause a problem if you have a DVD player, DVD recorder and a VCR and the TV only has 3 Scart/RGB sockets. Of course you can solve this using a Scart cable switcher but at extra cost. So one free RGB/SCART socket for my other...

Sony HDD+DVD recorder, 1080p upscaling.
Advantages: Perfect recordings in SD mode, even better in HQ mode. Goodlooking unit.
Disadvantages: Only one digital tuner, can't watch one channel whilst recording another
...Off air DVB-T recordings in SD are totally indiscernable from the original broadcast quality, that alone is very impressive, but even more so is that HQ mode, which records at a staggering 15mps seems to actually *improve" over the broadcast quality! And it is HQ mode recordings when being upscaled via HDMI (To a 40" panny 1080p) that it really is impressive, No smearing, true deep colours etc. But HQ mode cannot be burned to DVD, HQ recording mode is only available to the HDD.
DVD playback is excellent.
Minus points:
No USB/network capabilities.
CD playback is good but bass light.
The default setting output is S-Video, had to rummage around menu to activate full RGB SCART, and Component.
An excellent recorder, but sonics slightly lacking richness. 9/10...

Toshiba DVD player only £20
Advantages: All
Disadvantages: Only one scart connection
...What more can you ask for? A great brand DVD player at an eve better price!
These little beautys are now selling online for £20 which is an abolute steal!
The specification is as follows
PAL Progressive Scan
Sound & Power Output
DTS Digital Output
They play all the following types of disc... DVD, DVD+R/RW, DVD -RW, DVD-R, MP3, VCD, CD-R, CD-RW, SVCD, CD, JPEG (JPEG/Image CD), and are even DivX compatible
And on the back they have several connections these are 1 x Component Video Connection, 1 x Co-axial Digital Connection, 2 x Audio Analog Phono Connections, 1 x Composite Video Connection, 1 x RGB Scart Connection.
Having only one scart is a bit annoying but you can get around this if you wire it up correctly to your system :D
The quality of the DVD player is great and I have not had a problem with it in the few months...

LG 22LH2000. Satisfyingly adequate
Advantages: Connectivity, Weight, Price
Disadvantages: Build quality
...concerned about was connectivity because I have a number of digital cameras that have HDMI connections, a VCR and DVD player that connect via SCART and an S-Video to Composite Video output from my PC for when I want to use a second monitor. The 22LH2000 has 2 x SCART sockets (of which one is RGB), 1 x HDMI, 1 x Coax aerial, 1 x VGA monitor socket, an audio input and a set of Composite Video sockets.
For the sake of experimentation (and nothing else) I did try plugging my PC into the VGA socket and the TV functions perfectly well as a monitor, with a maximum resolution of 1360 x 760 pixels. The quality of the display was more than adequate ? although a little less crisp than my Emprex monitor. I?m sure I could fine tune this if it was ever going to become a permanent arrangement.
Initial set-up was easy enough, with the TV handling most...
