...Warm climate, warm welcome, beautiful scenery and INCREDIBLY good value – you can’t ask much more from a summer holiday, which probably explains why we have recently returned from our 3rd visit to Rhodes. The first time my husband and I went to Rhodes was in 1997 as a result of a late getaway deal, we had a couple of the larger Greek Islands under our belt but not much knowledge of the Eastern Med – we just wanted a cheap, sunny holiday. Rhodes in a Nutshell

Advantages: Golden sandy beaches, great weather, great food
Disadvantages: Euro has made it a little more expensive

Excursions from Rhodes

Advantages: So much on offer! Not just Greece.
Disadvantages: None

...So you may have heard of the Greek Island of Rhodes, but have you heard about the many and varied excursions available? In September 2000 my fiance and I went off on a fortnights holiday to the island. We stayed in an unfinished hotel in the resort of Trianda on the North West coast, on an all inclusive basis, all food, drinks and entertainment included. The holiday had been booked for almost a year so you can imagine our disappointment on arrival to see the hotel half built. What were we to do? Go off on excursions, that's what we did! The first of many was to Marmaris, but that's in Turkey you may be thinking. Indeed it is! Rhodes is only an hour away from Marmaris by catamaran, a reasonably inexpensive crossing, about £15 per person. If that sounds expensive just think how much money you can save on shopping in the resort...

Rhodes.

Advantages: Good value, lots to do, lots to see
Disadvantages: Not in the Inidian Ocean or the Carribean

...Rhodes, one of the most famous islands in the world, you just never knew it. Many a movie has been shot on Rhodes, one of the most famous being the Guns of Navarone. Visit Rhodes and relax, well thats a waste of a holiday. Rhodes is full of things to do. In length the island takes about 1 hour to drive and about 20 minutes to drive across. When you go to Rhodes you should be ready for every type of activity; Rock Climbing, take the climbing course and climb the Navarone cliff, as seen on the Guns of Navarone movie; Water Sports are very popular in Rhodes, I recommend the Marco Polo boat tour leaving from Faliraki harbour every morning and afternoon, taking in the local spa at Kalithea, Anthony Quinn bay, several other beaches with snorkelling and a great lunch or evening meal on board boat all for the extortionate cost of £10...

When I met colossus of Rhodes!

Advantages: Exciting and fullfilling
Disadvantages: Humid

...I went to Rhodes in the year of 2002, another family holiday! This was a late deal. I found that actually the only thing that dissapointed me about this holiday was that, when I stepped of the plane from the airport I was attacked by this sudden burst of humidity and I hated it, from then on I knew this is what it was going to be like throughout the holiday, but I didn't let it get to me too much! I stayed in a town called Theologos, in a hotel called summer dream, it wasn't the best i must say, but it was nice enough, the rooms got very hot during the night and this got very uncomfortable, but hey its not the hotel we are reviewing its the destination. So Rhodes, it is a fairly small destination, beautiful scenery. The town i stayed in was quite far away from any main shops and local houses, and so we ended up hiring out a car...

Rhodes is great, but pick your resort carefully!

Advantages: Lovely and hot, relaxed atmosphere
Disadvantages: pebbly beaches, very windy!

...traveling on a tight budget the hotel we stayed in was rather limited - three beds in a very small room led to a distinct lack of space! - and no pool. However as in most places in Greece we found other hotels which were happy to let us use their pool for the price of the rent of a sun lounger for the day (just a couple of quid). The nightlife in Rhodes Town was really just what I was looking for - lots of cheap bars down Bar Street, a couple of nightclubs (I must recommend Colarado's - three floors of different music and a house band that really impressed me!), and small enough to get to know the staff and regulars. Our holiday rep persuaded us that we should go to Faliraki at least once, so we grudgingly signed up for a Bar Crawl (big mistake by the way - we would have been much better off on our own!). We found Faliraki to be overpriced...

RHODES some things never change

Advantages: Variety
Disadvantages: Tourism galore

...Rhodes is a large island, great for hikers and bikers. The Old Town is probably the best preserved Medieval city on earth. And the scary thing is- it's still being lived in. When the tourists thin out in November and the Disneyland of mean little shops finally shut- the old town continues- dark and smelly- but authentic. Rhodes town is a big night life spot. Discos galore. Difficult to find a decent place to eat- pretty much the same fare everywhere. Rent a car and get out into the island. Lahania is magical. Lindos great for tourists. The east coast has the beaches for swimming- the west is a rougher sea and more deserted. Head for the mountains, drink Suma and eat lamb. But Greeks drive like maniacs so use care all the time....

Roads to walk in Rhodes

Advantages: friendly people, always warm, great food
Disadvantages: pebbled beach

...We stayed in Rhodes town itself, which was not to far from the airport and within bus and taxi rides to other towns. I must admit it had to be one of my best holidays ever. The entertainment is nothing like Benidorm they it is quite but not to quite they do have music on but it is more of a relaxing holiday, so if you are looking for someplace with the hussle and bussle of benidorm this is not the place, but on saying that there is just so many places to walk to especially in the old town. We stayed in the new part on Rhodes Town but we where in the old town everyday and every night and even on our last day walking around the old town we still found little nooks and crannies that we did not know that were there. The restaurants are all great never once had a bad meal in any of them and we ate out every day and night...

The island is also known as Rodos. I was lucky enough to be able to visit it when my husband decided to surprise me with air tickets as a birthday present. Reading all the paperwork, I discovered that I would be flying out on July 10th 1999; the accommodation to be chosen on my arrival. I was a little worried about that, and also the fact I was going on my own. I need not have worried though. I arrived safely in Rhodes airport and made my way to find the rep, who informed me that I would be staying in Lindos in a small apartment. Yes, she did mean small... The apartment was in whitewash style like most Greek places, and inside had one room...

A magical time in Rhodes

Advantages: Breathtaking scenary, extremely nice local people always willing to help and sociallise with you, wonderful seas, organised excavations to surrounding areas available, magnificent weather.
Disadvantages: It can be a bit pricy.

...I visited Rhodes with my partner last summer. We stayed in the city of Rhodes which we used as a base to visit other areas of the island! A wonderful time all together. We wend around all day long and had breaks to have a swim at the amazingly blue seas of Rhodes. The food was excellent and service was great. It can be a bit pricey if you like me are a student but you can always try gyro or soublaki for your dinner which between you and me; you will love! If you need information while you there on where and how to go places or activities that are available for all ages feel free to pop around the information centres. You will love the service as the people there are so nice and they will give you free maps a price lists to help you have a more relaxing vacation! The city of Rhodes provides excellent transportation for anywhere...
