A Big Day At The Sheffield Novotel!

Advantages: Excellent Food, Central Location.
Disadvantages: Poor Bar Service, Limited Parking.

...When one of my best friends got married yesterday (Sunday 19th December 2005) the location that she chose was the Novotel in Sheffield. This location was chosen for the entire day, which included the Civil Wedding at 2.30pm, the meal afterwards at 4pm and the evening reception which started at 7.30pm. The first thing that I will say before I begin this review is that I live less than a 5 minute walk away from this Hotel, which is conveniently situated right in the middle of the city centre, so I didn't actually stay here. This review is therefore based on my own opinions as seen from a non paying guest. My friend was staying at the Novotel (with her sister) on the Saturday night as well as her Wedding night the following day so I first went to this Hotel on Saturday night for a pre wedding drink. FIRST IMPRESSIONS The Novotel...

The Sheffield Star

Advantages: Lots Of Local News
Disadvantages: Not Published On A Sunday

...I thought that a review of my local Newspaper the Sheffield Star was well overdue, but I have been waiting for Ciao to add it as a product category. Now that it has finally been added I guess that there is no excuse so here goes?. THE BASIC INFORMATION The Sheffield Star is Sheffield's only daily Newspaper. It is published by Sheffield Newspapers Ltd and is colloquially known within its circulation area simply as the Star, which it will be referred to as hereafter in this review. The Star is published Monday to Saturday and circulated throughout South Yorkshire, North East Derbyshire and North Nottinghamshire. The daily circulation of this Newspaper was 182,237 as at the 1st February 2005. There are three different regional variations published other than the main Sheffield version. These regional versions cover Rotherham...

Ibis Sheffield - the heat is on, no it's off again!

Advantages: Good location, good value for money
Disadvantages: No additional facilties

...A low budget weekend getaway (thanks to National Express for the £1 each way offer!) called for a low cost hotel. I remembered someone saying that the Accor family member Etap now had a hotel in Sheffield but, situated by the Don Valley Stadium, it was a little too far out of town to be practical for such a short stay. As I am now the proud owner of an Accor hotels loyalty card I decided to check the Accor website and see if any other reasonably priced hotels presented themselves and this was how we came to choose the Ibis. I know this will sound strange to those readers who like a certain ?standard? of accommodation but I have rarely considered Ibis hotels because I?ve always thought them to be pricey; in any case I tend to look at hostel and bed and breakfast accommodation before I look at hotel options. We were quoted £49...

Sunny Sheffield

Advantages: Very central to most of England
Disadvantages: Meadowhall has killed the city centre off

...Sheffield became a city in 1889 approxiamate guess. Its the fourth largest city in England, with London, Birmingham and Leeds just in front of us. We have two universitys Sheffield Hallam and University of Sheffield. We have two fhigh profile football teams, Sheffield United and Wednesday. We are also home to the oldest football club in the world, Sheffield FC still in exsitence. For some strange reason Rotherham United have started to play games in Sheffield. The city centre is large but struggles due to the success of Meadowhall which has taken a lot of trade from the city centre. Our city caters more for the student than the people who live there, as you will see if you go down west street where all the pubs have student nights. We are located aout eight miles away from the wonderful countryside known as the peak district. We have...

Sheffield's Golden Mile!

Advantages: Good variety of bars and shops, easily accesible, good atmosphere
Disadvantages: Some shop prices are quite high

...Ecclesall Road is a vibrant area of Sheffield that has come to be known by many in the city as "The Golden Mile". It extends from St Mary's roundabout close to the city centre to Hunter's Bar roundabout and hence, as its nickname suggests it is about a mile long. Traditionally, Ecclesall the surrounding area from where this road derives its name, was one of the more affluent suburbs of Sheffield but in recent years many of the large houses have been converted into flats and this is now an area with a high student population. All along the length of Ecclesall Road there are shops, café's, bars and restaurants and at night time this area comes alive, whilst during the daytime it is busy with shoppers, but if you want to escape from this hustle and bustle there are several different options available nearby. Three of the city...

Novotel Sheffield

Advantages: Central
Disadvantages: Limited parking

...As my son is studying at Sheffield University we have sampled a few of the hotels Sheffield has to offer and the Novotel is one we have used more than once. For anyone visiting Sheffield for the first time, the traffic system can be a little confusing so the situation of the Novotel makes it attractive to visitors. Once you've negotiated Park Square and actually managed to turn left into Arundel Gate you have to drive passed the hotel on the opposite side of the road, go round the roundabout and come back along Arundel Gate the opposite way to gain entrance to the hotel. Each time we've visited there have been roadworks on or near the roundabout and this can cause problems. The hotel is clearly visible when you approach but the inside lane is buses only so you have to cut across the bus lane to get into the hotel. Parking is...

Whirlowbrook Hall, Sheffield

Advantages: Lovely setting
Disadvantages: Cafe is expensive

...Whirlowbrook Hall is located about 5 miles to the west of Sheffield city centre, close to the county border of Derbyshire and on the edge of the Peak District National Park. It was built in 1906 as the family home of Sir Walter Benton-Jones, a leading industrialist in the city. Today, Whirlowbrook Hall is one of the premier venues in the region for weddings, conferences, banquets and meetings. Within the building there are numerous different rooms that can be hired out for these private functions. The venue now also holds a civil marriage license so it is possible to get married here in addition to holding your function here afterwards. The various rooms range dramatically in size. A few years ago I worked for a company that hired out the Music Room on several occasions for its senior staff meetings and this is when I first became...

Weston Park, Sheffield

Advantages: Easily Accessible
Disadvantages: Quite Small

...Weston Park is the closest Public Park to Sheffield's City Centre and is probably best known for being the location of the Weston Park Museum, the City's oldest Museum. The Museum closed in March 2003 for a major refurbishment and was due to re-open in the autumn of 2005. This renovation cost £17 million and was partly funded by National Lottery money. However major structural problems that were discovered during this refurbishment meant that the Museum only finally re-opened its doors to the Public on Saturday 14th October 2006. The Museum is completely free to enter and is a fantastic place to visit but the rest of the Park should also not be ignored. Weston Park covers a 5 acre site nestled between buildings that belong to the City's University and directly adjacent to the Children's Hospital. This location makes it one...

Millhouses Park, Sheffield

Advantages: Free Access, Lots Of Open Space
Disadvantages: Swimming Pool No Longer Open

...Millhouses Park is a 32-acre Public Park that lies approximately 3 miles to the Southwest of Sheffield City Centre. Like many of the City's Parks and Public spaces the majority of this land was gifted to the City. The majority of the land that forms this particular Park was a gift from two prominent landowners in the early 1900's, the Earl Fitzwilliam & the Marquis of Zetland. This land was given over to the control of the City Council in 1909 with small areas of adjacent land being purchased by the Council a few years later. Millhouses Park lies in a lovely setting in a valley bottom besides the River Sheaf. Residential areas surround it to one side and mature woodland at the other. Within the Park there are many facilities including a Boating Lake, a Basketball Court, a Children's Playground, a Café, a Skate Park, Tennis Courts...

Sheffield's Controversial Supertram!

Advantages: Fast, Cheap and Comfortable
Disadvantages: Does Not Serve The Whole City, Often Congested

...Historically the City of Sheffield had an extensive Tram System that served the City from the late 1880's until 1960 when it was abolished. It had been perceived by the late 1950's that the future of travel in the City would be with Cars. Twenty five years later and there were so many Cars on the Roads that the City's transport infrastructure was on the verge of complete collapse. Clearly something radical had to be done and a Government funded study concluded that the future of travel in Sheffield would once again lie in the hands of the Trams. These new Trams would be a far cry from the old Victorian Trams that had once graced our streets, they would be fast, clean and environmentally friendly. Lessons could be learned from similar schemes in other UK Cities like Manchester and the latest technology available would make these...
