Another Ridley Scott masterpiece

Advantages: awesome battle scenes, brilliant storyline
Disadvantages: absolutely none!

Let me first give you a run down on the story. Maximus is General of the armies of the north, loved by his troops, like a son to the emperor. After the opening battle The Barbarian hordes have been defeated and Rome has no more enemies. The emeperor asks Maximus to return power to the senate and the people of Rome. The emperor's son, Commodus, is furious and kills his father blaming it on Maximus. Maximus escapes but this leads to his capture by slavers. He is forced to fight as a galdiator and defeats anyone who challenges him. This leads him to Rome...

Advantages: Reminder of the "Fall of Rome classics"
Disadvantages: Not for the faint hearted

There is a thin line between enticing someone with enough plot and information to encourage them to read the book for themselves, and too much plot so that they pretty much don't need to read it. Tilt - Scott Walker

Disadvantages: perhaps a little too bleak at times

...Blimey - what an album! It's not, however, very likeable. Scott's previous record Climate Of Hunter, for all it's oddities, is still a collection of relatively traditional songs. Tilt isn't. But the opening "Farmer In The City" is still one of the best tracks ever recorded and still, after 12 years and goodness knows how many plays, brings me to the verge of tears at the "Paulo, take me with you..." bit. Amazing. The strings are stunningly powerful. "The Cockfighter" is weird beyond belief, especially the way Scott's voice fractures as he sings "it's a beautiful ni-HIght" which is just freaky. The minute of disturbing scratching noises at the start of the track weirds me out too. A whole new category of music - industrial classical. Ridley Scott's Alien-One of the greatest films of all time

Advantages: Direction, performances and many more
Disadvantages: Can't think of anything

...'ve only seen two or three instances of "Alien attacks." This is a testament to the superb direction and tension filled in the scene by Ridley Scott. The set-designs reminiscent of Kubrick's 2001, perfectly depict the environment and also so well presented in the opening shot. The gorgeous cinematography even in the '79 theatrical version still seemed absolutely spectacular to me. Oddly thought Alien only achieved two Academy award nominations at that time. What stops alien from becoming a less than perfect picture is the incredible cast and their performances. Weaver, in her first lead role realistically depicts her character well without any over-exaggerations, the legendry Ian Holm is just perfect and John Hurt just as brilliant. Advantages: An epic story & DVD
Disadvantages: Its not a short film

...to commemorate his fathers death. This means that Maximus returns to Rome to fight in the games. The senate is now plotting against Commodus and Maximus sees this as his chance for revenge. An outstanding film in the true meaning of the word 'epic', everything from the Colosseum to the city of Rome is breathtakingly recreated. Disadvantages: Could be hard to follow for younger children.

...Philip Ridley was my favourite author when i was small. MY sister read me 'Mercedes Ice' when i was about 5 and I fell in love with it. I'm now 18 and that battered much-loved book is still on my bookshelf... Except now it is accompanied by every other Philip Ridley book, Including Mighty Fizz Chilla. The story is about a young boy called Milo Kick. Something happened to Milo (that nobody knows about but him) that cause him to transform from the perfect son to a difficult little monster practically overnight. His despairing mother sends him away to stay with a family friend. While there Milo becomes obsessed with the story of the mysterious Captain Jellicoe.
