...Torn Curtain is an Alfred Hitchcock produced and directed film released in 1966 which starred Paul Newman and Julie Andrews as Professor Michael Armstrong and his assistant/fiancé Sarah Sherman with support from Wolfgang Kieling, Lila Kedrova, Hansjorg Felmy, Ludwig Donath, Carolyn Conwell, Gisela Fischer and Gunter Strack. Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied. On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. I'm Torn Between Love and Hate!

Advantages: Well-researched, interesting for Hardy fans
Disadvantages: Not a lot of info (certainly not beyond basic facts), disappointing

...either, although I understand her reasons for calling it 'Thomas Hardy: The Time-Torn Man'. Hardy does tend to be torn between different times, which is evident in his poetry - Tomalin cites as examples the poems written upon the death of his first wife, Emma, whom he had grown apart from, which relive their early love - and his work in general. Tomalin really excels with the information on Hardy's early life: she's done a lot of research and there's a lot of detail. Hardy's situation is described plainly, without exaggeration or understatement. His background was modest, but he was hardly in the midst of poverty and he had a decent education - although he couldn't afford university, his parents paid for him to attend a good school in Dorchester, which is more than most working class families could do. ...I find this a really hard question to answer, yes, in some ways, we are being ripped off, yet in others, maybe the UK isn't that bad after all... Like most people, I hate having to pay tax. I don't think I'd mind as much, only so much of taxpayer's money is wasted on stupid things - millennium dome anyone? If my taxes went directly towards things that I would benefit from, fair enough, but other things, including members of parliament's salaries, I don't feel so happy about. My strongest feelings towards rip off Britain are those of the motorist. It seems the government are doing their best to push public transport for the future, and are making cars more expensive as a way of 'forcing' people on public transport. Review of Are we living in rip-off Britain?

Tattered & Torn

Advantages: One of the best Nu Metal albums that has ever been released.
Disadvantages: It is imperfect, there was definitely room for improvement.

...fails to impress me. I love the way that this track progresses, there is not one moment of weakness here and always all elements of the music come across well. With this being their début album and all, the music of Slipknot was not always particularly great here and often mistakes are made but this is one such example of a track where no mistakes are made whatsoever. Other tracks that impress here are 'No Life', 'Spit it Out', and 'Tattered & Torn'; all three of these are brilliant and I loved them all back when this album was first released. The music of Slipknot is greatly aggressive and it is this that makes their music so great to listen to, they were part of the Nu Metal scene and yet their music is so much more raw than many of the other bands that were a part of this scene.
