Rob Roy: Of Valor and Honor

Advantages: Strong performances by a talented cast
Disadvantages: A bit more gratuitous violence than you'd want young children to witness

...Note: Some plot details are disclosed in this opinion. Based on the novel by Sir Walter Scott, Rob Roy is the kind of movie that you just almost have to like. With a script that is largely unmarred by shades of moral gray, good is clearly good, evil is clearly evil, marital love and fidelity triumph over all challenges, and justice prevails at the end of the day. It is, in a word, wholesome. Toss in a healthy dose of standing stones, Highland lochs, and good Scottish scenery in general, and--well, you just about have to like this movie. At least, Himself and I do. We own a VHS copy, and when we crave escape to the Highlands or exposure to political and personal honor (try to find either these days), we pull out Rob Roy for uplifting dose of courage and valor--plus a wee bit or romance. During its best moments, this film makes...

FREE DVDs

Advantages: Free trial, large choice, post included, new realeases
Disadvantages: see review

...I like movies and I like freebies, so when you get offered both in one swoop you?re bound to accept! I used my two week free trial with this company and remained with them for a couple of monthsbefore moving on to try many other companies free trials (and winning a new DVD player on Tesco DVD rental site on their free trial offer). I then had an email from DVDs 365 asking me to go back, and offering me a free DVD if I did so. I had just left Tesco (with my new DVD player) so I chose to go back with them. ∆◊◊ THE SERVICE THEY OFFER ∆◊◊ Basically it?s like going to a video shop and hiring films on DVD, except you don?t pay for each film you chose ? rather a monthly fee for which you can watch as many movies as you can fit in, for us this is usually around 8 a month (2 a week usually weekends...

Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

...At first I wasn't convinced by up-scaling DVD player technology but was persuaded after reading an article in "What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision" magazine. Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied. On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. All the components such as cables, remote and manuals were well presented in their own protective plastic bags, to keep them protected. The player...

Rob Roy - an interesting wok of fiction

Advantages: Good fights
Disadvantages: Why get an Irishman to play a Scot?

...Not bad for another summer blockbuster, this one actually has a good (if inaccurate) story. It is the film of the legend of Rob Roy MacGregor who tricked into debt by a Scottish laird sought to settle the score. Filled to the brim with period duels and honour, along with some very over the top hats this is an entertaining adventure film with a respectable story. Tim Roth and John Hurt play the villains, and as I mention a lot, British actors play the best villains (I don?t recall either of them in a bad film). The fact that (predictably) the hero walks off with wife and kids at the end, when the real Rob Roy was hung drawn and quartered let the film down for me, and I felt used Scottish History to cash in. But don?t let that put you off a good film, with some outstanding performances....

At least Rob Grant can see it coming

Advantages: funny, couldn't put it down
Disadvantages: finishing it

...more complex, but nothing you couldn't handle! One of the biggest highlights of the book was the sheer volume of comedy, The jokes in there are never over done or strung out and are definitely not in short supply. There is also something for everyone, ranging from comedy in its most blunt form, to a political satire in other places. The characters integeral to the plot are few, and at times can seem underdeveloped, but i can assure you they are not. Rob Grant is direct and to the point without getting bogged down with the past and it does not really detract from the characters at all. All in all Incompetence is a great book and i would highly recommend reading it. It is a laugh a minute, whilst providing a satisfactory plot and at times can be scarily insightful as to what Europe is heading towards!...

Review of Incompetence - Rob Grant

Our Rob or Ros

Advantages: Very Funny
Disadvantages: None

...interesting changes took place in the 7th series: Co writer Rob Grant decided to leave the series leaving Doug to carry on with some brought in writers. Chris Barrie decided that he would only appear in four of the episodes and so Kochanski was brought in. The dynamics of the show changed forever, not always for the best. The show itself got more hardcore Sci-Fi, great. Disc 1. ****** Episodes 37. ~ Tikka to Ride~ The crew time travel to a very well known 'Grassy Knoll' with some hilarious results. Time travelling paradoxes are all over the place and this was a proper sci-fi episode. 38. ~ Stoke Me a Clipper~ The episode where Rimmer finally becomes 'Ace' What a guy! The real ace is mortally wounded and before he dies he bequeaths his wig and cigar to Arnie so that he can carry on the 'Ace' legacy. Goodbye Big man, but...

Cats chase mice - or do they?

Advantages: Full of humour
Disadvantages: Story not wildly exciting

...wiggling with excitement rather than the worry of the previous morning. Rob Scotton, of 'Russell the Sheep' fame, has created another character and story full of delight and humour in 'Splat the Cat'. Whilst not being the first book on the trauma of starting school, this is an original take on the idea. The cats behave like typical cats in some ways, but Scotton depicts them as people who wear clothes, ride bikes and walk on two legs. Strangely enough, Splat himself doesn't wear anything, except that he has a small red helmet when he is on his bike. Scotton's illustrations are charming. Splat has a lovely furry body and head but his legs are like matchsticks and his tail is extremely long and wiggly. We see his classmates welcoming him with big grins, some with missing teeth, some wearing glasses, and one hugging a Russell the Sheep toy. There...

High Drama In The Highlands

Advantages: Good casting. Excellent performances. Stunning scenery.
Disadvantages: Perhaps a wee bit drawn out at 133 minutes.

...FILM REVIEW ONLY ~~~~~~~~~ ~ ~ Rob Roy MacGregor is a legendary figure in Scottish history, immortalised forever in the famous novel of the same name by Sir Walter Scott published in 1817. Scott's novel is probably the main reason he's a legendary figure in Scottish history, as in reality he was a simply a clan chief from around Stirling, (the old Scot's capital) who supported the cause of the Stuarts (Jacobites) in the 1715 rising against the Crown, and who had a penchant for cattle rustling and general mischief making. ~ ~ Mind you, viewing the 1995 movie "Rob Roy" by Scots director Michael Caton-Jones, with the brilliant Irish actor Liam Neeson in the title role, you'd be forgiven for thinking that Rob Roy MacGregor was a major historical figure. Never let it be said that reality should spoil a good Hollywood blockbuster...

I've been robbed

Advantages: Not as many as in previous series
Disadvantages: Some poor entrants

..., and they will probably be miles out, since as I mentioned there really isn?t too much to get enthused about. Being however that in their wisdom the TV channels have put X Factor up against Strictly I will no doubt see the fiasco right to the end unless of course John and Edward are doing well in which case I won?t have a telly and will be quietly playing Scrabble with a Bacardi and Coke in hand. My disappointment might be slightly muffled by the fact that this season I?m not expecting any riveting performances only moderate mediocrity with perhaps a few surprises. I you are an X Facor buff I wish you the best in your endeavours to scrimmage some talent from what is certainly not the best of that which was auditioned, but I?m NOT a judge merely a license paying viewer who feels slightly robbed....
