The Best Of De Niro? You Decide!

Advantages: Three of the best of De Niro's films
Disadvantages: One Lame movie, one turkey, and a confusing format issue

...I'm sure few will dispute that over the last 30 years few actors have had a resounding and impressive screen presence than Robert De Niro. Although I believe of late he has lost his way slightly during the 70's, 80's, and 90's he was easily the guy at the top of the ladder. The Robert De Niro collection gathers 5 of his works together; unfortunately with these sort of collections the quality of work is impeded by the fact that the company releasing the box set is only offering the best of that actors movies from their stock catalogue. As a result although we have five films, four of which are very good but they are obviously not the five best movies of his career. Warner Brothers of whom have created this box set have included the following movie Heat, The Mission, This Boys Life, Goodfellas and City By The Sea. For the record if I...

Robert De Niro's Waiting

Advantages: Dakota Fanning - she's superb
Disadvantages: It's all a bit daft, you know

...to constantly creak and groan throughout the film, as if to warn the occupants of impending doom, although we know it's just the wind. A carefully worn little path leads from the house down to an old cave that shelters, who knows what? And then there is Emily. If ever a girl could be described as creepy, then this would be she. Dakota Fanning's potrayal of the troubled girl is something of a revelation and it is only fair to say that she steals the show. Her piercing little eyes and haunted expression are very powerful and in spite of everyone else's insistence that she is "such a cutie" I kept expecting that music from The Omen to start playing every time she came on screen. Robert De Niro is a funny guy

Advantages: Some great laughs
Disadvantages: Not to everyones taste

...and *beg* for permission first. This can range from uncomfortable to torturous depending on the prospective father in law, and when Greg meets Jack (Robert De Niro). Greg realises that this will be a torturous experience, but he is still confident that his love for Pam will win over Jack, so they stay with "The Parents" in the lead up to the sisters wedding. De Niro plays the role the best way he knows how to, an intimidating figurehead who likes to watch people squirm. Anyone who has seen "Something About Mary" will have an idea regarding the humour in this film, but this time it is more polished, and generally..well...more..humorous!! He's a Jolly Good Fellow, ooh Robert De Niro*

Review of The Adam And Joe Show (DVD)

Robert De Niro.. what else can I say?

Advantages: Well, De Niro's in it.. oh, it's pretty funny too.
Disadvantages: Not everyone's cup of tea.

...It's a film with Robert De Niro in it.. so it has to be good, right? Well, it's certainly a slight change of direction to his usual mob type films. The film's about a mob boss (De Niro, of course) who realises that he can lo longer do the things gangsters should do - shoot people, for example. So he enroles the help of a psychiatrist (Crystal) to help him sort it out. The adventure then starts. It's a funny film, although it may not have you rolling about constantly. There's also been some critisism of De Niro's crying scenes, but I personally find them funnier because his crying seems purposely hammy. De Niro and Pacino are cooking on gas

Advantages: Brilliant story, direction, action... looks amazing too
Disadvantages: One bit of dialogue that sounded fake - otherwise none

...You may have noticed that the advertising campaign for the recent Miami Vice film has said "from Michael Mann, director of Heat". And like me, you may have been wondering, what on earth is "Heat"? Well, I'll tell you. It's an epic crime thriller that unites Al Pacino and Robert De Niro; two great actors who have surprisingly never worked together. I could have sworn they were both in the Godfather Part 2, but maybe not? Pacino, De Niro, Jack Nicholson et al

Advantages: Brought back happy memories
Disadvantages: none!
