Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied. On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. He comes from a small village in Norway called Langevaag and he got together with two friends, Tor and Alf, and set about to record an album. Tor does the drums and Alf plays bass for Post. Mike Hedges is the producer of the album, who has produced work for many different artists such as the Manic Street Preachers or Travis. This album looks like it could be set to be big in due time. ...I am going to try and not cover much of the ground that other members have in the writing of this review. The reason I decided to write this is to try and get other people that, like me, are absolutely petrified of needles, injections and all things related but would still be physically able to do it, to try and change their minds and persuade them to give donating blood a go. I have hated things like injections all my life. I nearly fainted when I had my Rubella jab at age 12 in school, but that's just me and just an example to give you a bit of an idea of how bad my phobia (for want of a better word) is and what a big deal it is for me to now be a blood donor. He had lots of units of donated blood. 2 days after his op, while visiting the hospital to visit my dad, I went past the Blood Donation Centre and thought, "ok then, lets do it!" I hauled my poor confused hubby who reckoned we should have been going into the transplant unit instead. Inside it was warm and friendly. We were asked to take a number and wait in the nice seating area until our number was called. The lady behind the desk was very smiley and has been on the desk everytime I have gone in. What we're earning here are just pennies, and when we reach payout level, the amount will barely buy us a Mc Donalds hamburger with fries and coke. In the hands of an efficient charity organisation like the Red Cross or Unicef, the same amount can make a huge difference to people in Southeast Asia. Just imagine: 1.8 million people starving down there! In the current situation, every penny counts, and £5 may well be enough to save a life or several.
