Pop, pop, pop music!
Review of Fat Pop Hits - Various Artists by
Mel27
Advantages: Lots of hits from the late 1990s
Disadvantages: The usual odd songs you don't like or can't even remember!
...such as "On The Horizon" with Melanie C and "Life Is a Rollercoaster" for Ronan Keating.
I also love the N Sync track, which reached Number 40 on the UK charts in 1997 from what I remember. The rest of the tracks I either like or can't remember to be honest, even after I'd heard them again!
The album is essentially pure pop but there are some dance artistes in there eg Apollo 440 and Fat Boy Slim. Representing the tailend of the Britpop era are Catatonia and Stereophonics.
The cassette cover is a bright kaleidoscope of colour. It has "Fat Pop Hits" in blue writing against a spangly red and green background.
Overall, this is an odd compilation, even for the time. There are mainly big hits of 1999 and some earlier 1990s songs. I think it may be good for nostaligia nights in years to come but that's all. I don't regret borrowing it but I...

the best of U2
Review of Best Of 1980-1990, The - U2 by
demongit
Advantages: superb album with a great range of music
Disadvantages: none
...U2 have been around for quite a long time, since the 1980’s. They have released numerous albums such as “Rattle and hum”, “The Joshua tree” , “October”, “Pop”, and “War”. They released their Best of album a little while ago, and this was the overtaken by their newest release, “All that you can’t leave behind”.
I have read numerous opinions that have said this latest album is not so good. Many of the people are first time U2 listeners, who have never heard their music before! I feel they have missed out and are wrong, as U2 have been in the business a long time, have become superstars in their own right and can pack any stadium in the world. The Best of album is a showcase of their best works from the beginning to 1999 and is supreme. It features many...

Thunder - Not Dead Yet!
Review of Robert Johnson's Tombstone - Thunder by
Soho_Black
Advantages: Some songs as good as anything Thunder have ever done
Disadvantages: Not available really cheaply, yet.
...In these days of flash in the pan musical acts, it’s refreshing to be able to review a band’s eighth studio album; a band that have been together on and off for nearly two decades. Knowing the fickle nature of music fans, it does give me a little proud moment to be able to say that I’ve been a fan since the debut album, “Backstreet Symphony”, was released in 1989.
Always a pop-rock band with a blues edge, thanks to Luke Morley’s writing, this time the band have named the album after a legendary blues singer, who influenced both the Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton. Robert Johnson supposedly died after being poisoned and there is a legend that says he sold his soul to the devil in return for being able to play the guitar better. Regardless of whether this is true, it is his blues roots that give a clue towards the sound of this album...

Santana is so smooth!!!
Review of Supernatural - Santana by
pmcds
Advantages: Great tracks and guest stars
Disadvantages: specific music taste required on the whole
...Supernatural is the 1999 album from the Mexican Latin sensation Carlos Santana. It is said that this album kickstarted his career after a faltering from the guitar supremo in the mid-1990s. It is a magnificent collection of music with Latin and Cuban themes, and incorporates the musical talents of modern genius minds such as Wyclef Jean, Eric Clapton and Eagle-Eye Cherry. Track 5 'Smooth', featuring the vocal talents of Matchbox Twenty lead singer Rob Thomas was a massive interntaional hit. The album itself has gone 15 times platinum, and has won 9 Grammy awards.
I really like this album, particularly Everlast's invlovement in track 2, 'Put Your Lights On'. It is of a specific Latin/Cuban style, though, and will thus will only appeal to an audience favouring this style.
These are the tracks:
1. (Da Le) Taleo
2. Love Of My Life...

What an album!
Review of marillion.com - Marillion by
dacrasha
Advantages: Good Album
Disadvantages: not enough tracks on the album
...The Year 1999 - 80'z Rock band Marillion Release the Album - "marillion.com" - And What an album it is
With tracks such as "Rich" and "interior lulu" this good all rounder of an album. The songs on the album don’t all follow the same style all the way though, for example, the Rich pop style of Rich – compared to the deep emotional “built in Bastard radar” if you are a fan of Marillion, or are thinking of buying a marillion album, just to see what there like – I fully recommend this one. Well done lads!

Well blow me away.
Review of Nevermind - Nirvana (US) by
veryhairymonkey
Advantages: best american album of all time
Disadvantages: a bit disturbing
...Poison, Warrant, and Cinderella; and the coporate/over-the-top styles of rap artists like M.C. Hammer and Vanilla Ice. When Nirvana hit the charts with "Nevermind" and the first single "Smells Like Teen Spirit", it destroyed many of those artists and they would never be heard of again (Thank God).
"Nevermind" is a true rock classic for the 1990s. Nirvana led by singer/guitarist Kurt Cobain along with bassist Krist Novoselic and drummer Dave Grohl helped combine punk rock sound with pop hooks as heavy metal god Ozzy Osbourne described as "Heavy metal meets the Beatles. Produced by Butch Vig, "Nevermind" is an excellent rock record that helped define the 1990s.
The album starts off with the classic anthem "Smells Like Teen Spirit" that featured that famous opening guitar riff from Kurt Cobain with cool bass hooks from Krist Novoselic...

My personal top 10 bands ever.
Review of Top 10 Musicians/Bands by
dartfordhammer
Advantages: I love these bands.
Disadvantages: A lot can be debated about my choices.
...Hermosa Beach in California, USA.
They seem to have become more angry with age, which is a pleasant surprise in my opinion, as the current political climate is ripe for criticism. Top stuff.
9. The Music.
Say what you like about this band, but I think that they're the hottest prospect in Britain since Oasis hit the radio waves in the early 1990's. With a tightly-played full sound, this band really could go all the way to superstardom. While not being the most original band ever, they create a whole sound that is unique to any other band.

Welcome To The North - 2004

All hail Blur
Review of Blur by
sicfine
Advantages: great list of tracks
Disadvantages: none
...Blur has released a very best of blur in DVD which includes all the very best tracks of blur form 1990-1999. Blur is probably the best UK band that comes up in the 90’s. The disc was made in the relatively early days of DVD, so the menus are very basic. It is made up of walls with posters of the singles on, and you make your way across the wall and select the poster you want. It's a bit frustrating. The better way is to use the scene forward and scene backward buttons on your remote, and treat the DVD like a CD with pictures. The track numbers are on the back, and you can find the song you want pretty easily this way.
This DVD is a must have for all Blur fans out there, it has some of the coolest and catchy tunes from the 90’s put in together. 'The Universal', 'Charmless Man', 'Song 2', 'M.O.R.' and 'Coffee & TV' are really a classics...

The Rare, The Raw, The BEST!
Review of Rare The Raw And The Rest, The - Thunder by
Soho_Black
Advantages: A great album and great value to boot
Disadvantages: Why have "the rest" when "the rare" and "the raw" are so good?
...with "Numb" (from 1999's Giving the Game Away") and this is very close to being the best ballad Thunder have produced, and would be if "Love Walked In" wasn't such a wonderful song. This is probably as close as they've come to matching that track.
"Now you've seen the worst I can do, I don't wanna keep hurting you/Can you find it in yourself to forgive me/Now you know what I am, do you think you can stand it/Cause I know that it's true/I've got history in the making with you"
The album closes out with "Between the Covers", which has a filthy lyric that even Whitesnake might have been proud of. It's a mid-tempo pop-rock track, with a funky guitar riff running through it, which almost drags you out of your chair to dance. After the seeming maturity of the previous lyric, though, the lyrics here do seem to leave a lot to be desired.
I wouldn...

Songs in the Key of X
Review of X - Def Leppard by
Soho_Black
Advantages: It's distinctively Def Leppard
Disadvantages: They're trying to recapture former glories
...didn't want them suddenly being on the rockier side of pop! The DJ at my favourite rock club had already termed them "Deflife" after playing the single.
Musically, my concern was that the lead single from the album, "Now", wasn't really all that impressive, and the available snippets from the website didn't inspire much more hope. Worse was to come when the NME rated the album very highly indeed. They did the same with Terrorvision's "Shaving Peaches" album, which turned out to be the worst of the band's career. They also called it "the best rock album since Andrew WK's 'I Get Wet'." Damned with faint praise, maybe, as that album is only about a year old and wasn't actually all that good! I'd hope that this would be better than that.
Needless to say, my plans involved going over the road and buying the album in WHSmith at lunch. I'd got...
