...For anyone into rock music who hasnt bought Muse's first album, 'Showbiz', yet, i give it two thumbs up. Muse are one of the hottest emerging british bands around, and are set to follow in the steps-and success of Radiohead. Radiohead are clearly their main influence, so if you're a radiohead fan, i can garuntee you'll like this. Their sound is a mix of deep, meaningful lyrics, sung from the heart, soaring vocals, gorgeous melodies and catchy riffs, resulting in a fantastic alternative rock album. There's also a nice range of moods in the songs, some to sing along loudly to, while others, are quiet, and reflective, to chill out to. All in all, a great collection of songs worth listening to....

Pause For A Muse

...When Muse came onto the scene with their debut album they were dismissed by some as a Radiohead clone. Yes there was a vocalist with a big vocal range, the songs were a bit off kilter and not in the norm, and there were some weird sounds. So what? With their second album Origin of Symmetry Muse proved that they rock harder than Radiohead. Now we have Absolution, the third studio album and after a 9/10 score from the NME it?s safe to say that Muse are on the up once again. I?ve been listening to the album for a few weeks now and bought it yesterday. It?s already growing on me and fans of their previous records won?t be disappointed. ...It?s been a long time coming. 3 years since Black Holes and Revelations Muse have returned with The Resistance and with a weight of expectation that would crush lesser bands the Devon dwelling trio have found new strength, a new sound and new ways to rock your socks. ...Muse are my definition of ‘brilliant Alternative Rock’. They have a great way of blending different songs from different styles of music in to one album, just like, the less popular, ‘Showbiz’. Here is my report on the rock album of the year (or possibly not… ‘Take off your pants and jacket’ ring a bell?). 1) New born – what can I say, sheer, utter, brilliance. An excellent song, which deserved more credit, it should’ve been number one in the charts. This album became top of the ‘rock’ charts immediately after this song was put on sale!!! 2) Bliss is not an easy song to respect, so much like a Christmas backing tune, I’m surprised it wasn’t sold as the ‘Opening theme to the Queen’s speech’! 3) Space Dementia is an intriguing song...

MUSE HYSTERIA

Advantages: Big move up in quality from the second album
Disadvantages: unecessary 'intro' and 'interlude' tracks

...still mnages to sound huge. 'Stockholm Syndrome' is a frantic guitar workout with a bass line apparantly influenced by system of a down. 'Falling away with you' is reminiscient of 'unintended' from the first albumand is similarly understated with a great soothing vocal. 'Hysteria' is heavy as hell and one of the high points of the album. 'Blackout' is a bit of a let down.Seems to spend a lot of time going nowhere. 'Butterflies and Hurricanes' has some great lyrics,as well as bieng one of the most ambitious tracks ont he album musically. 'The small print' is a fairly standard Muse song, that fails to excite. 'Endlessly' with a great keyboard riff is a highlight and is a fine piece of mid-paced rock. 'Thoughts of a dying atheist' is as ridiculous as its title, but the claustrophobic guitars and paranoid lyrics go well together.The finale...

...After recently watching one of the best live performances I've ever seen at Reading Festival this bank holiday weekend, I felt it completely necessary to review what is, in my opinion, Muse's best album to date; Origin Of Symmetry. After the general success of their debut Showbiz, this second album raised them into the high-society of headlining rock music acts. After this weekend's show, it's easy to see why Matt Bellamy, Chris Wolstenholme and Dominic Howard are thought of so highly. Opener New Born, is simply breath-taking. The piano introduction builds the song up perfectly, with Bellamy's eerie vocals - Thom Yorke-esque at times - acting as a perfect compliment. Then it all happens. ...I was wondering when the new album is going to come out. This album did not disappoint me at all. The title might have been fortunate to be called ?The Resistance? since I really could not resist buying this straight away. The first thing that I liked about is the cover art; a man in front of a multi-coloured circular ball/globe(?). It definitely does bring out the whole album. Also, if you look at it long enough, you will see that the image is going in towards the Earth but as a whole, it just looks like a globe. 01. Uprising This track is one of my favourite in the album. It is quite alienating at some point and very upbeat. This track, I think sets the new album as a totally new different style to Muse?s other album. 02. Keeping Their Muse

Advantages: Cryptic lyrics, good guitars, good singing
Disadvantages: No killer track as such, tracks a bit too similar

...It's hard to imagine, 12 years on, just what kind of state music was in when Muse where formed. Oasis were just breaking through, as were Radiohead; Green Day were beginning to get recognition, Smashing Pumpkins were reaching their creative peak, R.E.M. were one of the worlds biggest bands and the type of music that would later be labelled 'Britpop' was about to take centre stage with Blur, Oasis, The Spice Girls and Suede. It could be argued that it was the wrong time to form a band based on roughly the same principles as many of the alternative bands of the previous five years. Which Muse?.......Euterpe (of course!)

Advantages: Blinding 4th album with an uneasy lyrical twist
Disadvantages: Topping it next time round.

...Again'? not because of style (which the latter exudes in more ways than one), but musical gravity? i.e. A heavyweight contender. Other critics of Muse have argued that this album is a mish-mash of studio offerings that hang badly together and only exist on one album to satisfy the musical taste of their faithful many, notably in France and Japan, and the "on the mainstream fringe" brigade. Bellamy sees the eclecticism however in a more positive light believing that the album marks a watershed in the bands rediscovery of their passion for music and inventiveness. Bellamy has also reaped revenge on his critics by singing "Jive Talkin'" with accordion accompaniment late at night outside their front doors whilst they tried to sleep. Disadvantages: sometimes shallow

...seemed very surprised and gave me a funny look when I told her it was for me that worried me for a start. The story was interesting because firstly it centred on the lives of three very different contrasting characters that, only shared a wonderful talent. It was fascinating to see what happened to them as the novel went chronologically through all the highs and lows of their lives, all the main developments that went to make them all Rock Stars. Yes in some ways it was shallow, the way these fortunate people enjoyed such a lavish lifestyle. Full of beautiful young men and women who?s only leisure time pursuit seemed to be having sex. Luckily these scenes were not too graphic in the author?s descriptions of them; instead she left quite a bit of it to your own imagination which was fine by me.
