History that Inspires

Advantages: history that is accessible and entertaining, well presented

...There are a few authors which take me back to my childhood. Alongside Jacqueline Wilson, Nick Inkpen and Roger Hargrieves, theres Terry Deary. He writes a series of childrens books called Horrible Histories, and one of these is The Rotten Romans. Cover: You should never judge a book by its cover, but I must admit, I do do it! The cover of this particular book. There is a powerful looking man with a sword in hand, threatenng to lash it down onto two littler men, in the night sky. It looks quite dark and creepy, perfect to grab your attention! Plot: The book, naturally, is all about the Romans and how they lived their lives. It covers highs and lows of the period. It is not just all words though - a lot of it is illustrated with helpful diagrams. It makes learning easy as a lot of people do tend to memorise things better if they see it...

...I have lived in Dover, Kent my entire life and to be honest, we don't have that many great attractions here. One that we do have, is The Roman Painted House. The Roman Painted House The Roman Painted House in Dover is the modern equivalent of a hostel and was discovered in 1970 by The Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit. They soon found out that this discovery was to be of important significance to the history of Roman Britain. The Roman Painted House is extremely well preserved and had many finds inside that were also in very good condition. It took The Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit a total of 22 years to excavate the entire house due to its size and all thw work that went into digging it up. The Roman Quay

Advantages: In the middle of town, good atmopshere

...The Roman Quay pub in Dover is located about a minutes walk from the market square of Dover town. It is also only a 5 minute walk from Dover Priory train station and a minutes walk from the main bus station meaning it very easy to get to. The Pub The pub consists of two sections, with the main entrance being in the middle of the pub. From this entrance, you can choose to go either left on right depending on what side of the pub you wish to go. There are also two more entrances, one to either side of the pub. Roman Baths

Advantages: lots to see, street markets, food markets, great value for money.
Disadvantages: they need to invest in developing the place, it needs it.

...A few months ago, before this "crunch" (when we could still afford it), we went on a week's trip to oxford, bath & weston-super-mare. the most intresting one was the trip to bath. we arrived at 09:00 and had the all day to toure the place. the city itself is a small version of an old roman city (it WAS a roman city) in witch the main attraction is the old roman baths (not the only attraction). the whole city is built on a mountain and so you'll probably have more fun driving there with a 4x4 (i took my toyota land cruiser and felt like a king). the entrance to baths cost about £12 a person but i think it changes by the season. you get a talking device that explains the history of the place as you go inside and lets you stop and look (and hear) about the different intresting points along the way. we didn't use the device as there is so...

...I bought "Ten Horrible Histories" from a book club we run at school. They cost me £10 for the set which was an excellent bargain. They are marked at £4.99 each. The books are paperback with approximately 127/130 pages in each. They are easy and interesting to read for young children with a reading age of about eight. Boys of this age especially, sometimes find reading boring just as the author states that history can be boring. All of the books have a contents and introduction page. The books are interesting and very cleverly written. If a child finds reading a page of text difficult they can read the comic strip or the jokes and an adult could share the book with them by reading the text. There are quizzes and in some books questions to ask the teacher, so the teacher must read the book too! There are rhyme words, lists...

American History X

Advantages: Great plot, superb characters and a theme that needed to be discussed

...Well my next review again is another film that was made during the 90's. Gosh they really don't make films like they use to. I must admit ive only seen this film twice once in high school and once with my friends, and both times the film just gives you a sense of shock. The film im going to review is the 1998, critically acclaimed "American History X", directed by Tony Kaye and Edward Norton and Edward Furlong. Ok two quick recaps here, Edward Furlong is the guy who was John Connor in Terminator 2, however just a wee bit more older in this film, but he still looks the same. We then have Edward Norton; you might recognise him from his earlier work in Primal Fear and The People vs. Larry Flynt I must admit this review will talk about some cruel and in some cases sadistic scenes, and for that I apologise if it causes any offence...
