Rome rocked

Advantages: Excellent strategy game
Disadvantages: Not for those without time on their hands.

...This is the game who's engine was used recently on one of the bbc's programs, it featured historical battles being fought by teams of people, and the public wanted to try it themselves. Thus, Rome:Total War was born and many people, including me, were and are hooked onto it. As i hurried home with the game in my hand, and a few points on my game card, i couldnt wait to play it. The cellophane was ripped off, and the cd placed in the drive, i couldnt contain my excitement. The installation was relatively simple, no hiccups, just changing cd's every now and again. And then suddenly, the question was popped " Would you like to run Rome:Total War now". I ticked the box, and pressed ok, the red loading screen opened up before me. The small red bar at the bottom of the screen filled up and i had started my journey into the past. The list...

Ciao Bella! - The Best of Rome

Advantages: A lifetime of sights to see, excellent transport, amazing ice cream
Disadvantages: Very busy

...I visited here with two student friends in 2003, on a mission to soak up a lot of culture, have a great time and not spend much money, and we did pretty well on all counts. After sitting through years of torturous Latin lessons at school, I had high hopes for the city. We managed to find possibly the strangest hotel in Rome to stay in, the Hotel Giarda, near Stazione Termini, where they monitored our every movements through strategically placed security cameras, and the chamber maids had a good daily rifle through our luggage, but other than that it was well situated for exploring. Here are my top Roma sights (in no particular order): Vatican City: Even though this is slap bang in the middle of Rome, the Vatican is technically an independent state, with the Pope as sovereign, its own post office and legal system, and definitely...

Best Location In Rome

Advantages: Location, space, staff are friendly, air con
Disadvantages: None

.... The Emmaus hotel (three star), centrally located, with plenty of amenities on its door step, spacious rooms and friendly, helpful staff, makes a fantastic hotel. Whether a short break in Rome or a few weeks holiday, Emmaus has so many advantages that it makes any length of stay a stress free and pleasant visit. It's located on Via delle Fornaci (25), which is practically in the Pope's lap. To get to it you can take the Via Di Ciampino road, turning right onto Via Appia Nuova for 8km and then you'll find yourself in the city. Just follow the signs to the centre and head north . Emmaus is minutes away from the Vatican (one hundred yards to be exact), so once you see that then you're almost there. Or you could take the train from Ciampino airport (Ciampino FS) to Stazione Termini. The fare is ?2 and you'll be able to buy your...

Highlight of Rome

Advantages: Bags of history, fantastic tour guides, beautiful views
Disadvantages: None noticable

...The immensity of these historical remains took my breath away before I had even begun to learn about the depth and horror of its history. Those of you who have seen Gladiator or studied Ancient Rome in history lessons may be aware of the basic features and uses of the Colosseum in its days of glory but the amount of information given during the tour intrigued and enlightened me to the full extent of its history. Getting to the Colosseum could not be easier. It is situated in the centre of Rome quite literally with main roads running meters away from its ancient structure. The Metro station is situated within meters of the entrance with a zebra crossing leading across the road to the cobbled pathway that ran around the Colosseum. However if you do chose to take the metro be careful when traveling to keep any belongings in front of you...

When In Rome...

Advantages: Great Location, Great Room, Friendly Staff
Disadvantages: Lack of Wardrobe Space

...When In Rome? = When we decided to go to Rome we initially looked for a package deal, however, it soon became clear that this wasn't going to be practical and it would be far better to organise it ourselves. The first thing we did was to look for accommodation, of course this can be a mine field, some were just too far away from the centre and some just had awful reviews on tripadvisor.com (an invaluable resource). Eventually, after an hour or two of searching we came across this hotel, it was pretty much in the centre of the tourist attractions and had good reviews so we decided to book it, we were not disappointed. The hotel is three star (Ciao's description says one star for some reason). The outside of the hotel is very nice, a traditional six storey building like most in Rome with a rusty clay look. It is...

When in Rome...

Advantages: Fantastic for quality service, price, and location
Disadvantages: You'll want to stay longer and you'll want to go back!

...A couple of years ago I was lucky enough to head out to Rome for a 3 day break with family. Flying Easyjet from Newcastle very early in the morning, we arrived in a warm and sunny Ciampino Airport we could barely believe that the dark and cold December day we had left behind in Newcastle was still the same day in sunny Rome. My Aunty P, who is fluent in Italian, and lived for a long time in Rome, had arranged transport to our Hotel, The Hotel King, right in the heart of the city, and so we bundled ourselves into the large taxi cab, and off we went! For me, it was something of an adventure, as neither myself or my mum, who was also with us, had been to Rome before. I have long been enchanted by the Italian language, and find it the only language I know to *feel* so nice being spoken - there's just a gorgeous sensation as the words...

Hotel Villa Patrizi, Rome

Advantages: Good location, good value for money, polite staff
Disadvantages: Small rooms

...~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Why we chose the hotel ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ My boyfriend and I decided to take a weekend city break in Rome, we were joined by his parents who travelled seperately. We looked on Expedia for a good deal and we found one with reasonable BA flights and 3 nights stay at Hotel Villa Patrizi. We looked at the information and pictures of the hotel on the internet and it looked good so we decided to book it. Now we have been to the hotel, and looking back at the pictures, they are true to life and do not decieve you in anyway that the hotel looks different to what it does. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ About the hotel ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hotel Villa Patrizi is a brand new 4 star hotel located in Rome. As you walk into the hotel there is a pretty sitting area full of beautiful, lively and colourful flowers. If the weather was nicer...

When In Rome...

Advantages: Fantastic location, brilliant service, immaculate
Disadvantages: It is pricey, but then, Rome is generally pricey

...Recently the boyfriend and I decided, continuing with our resolution from last year to travel more, that we needed a little break, so we scoured the website for some cheap flights and plumped on Rome as the destination. Next task, find a hotel. We were only going out for four days so we needed somewhere central which would be convenient for getting to all the sights and, hopefully, not too expensive. Neither of us had been to Rome before, so we had no idea of the best area to stay in, what the standards would be like, the cost; we were clueless! So with the help of the boyfriend's parents, who are travel agents and have also been to Rome before, we were recommended to stay at Hotel Cicerone . Hotel Cicerone is a 4* hotel with 292 rooms located a 5 minute walk from Lepanto metro station, on via Cicerone. We had flown into Rome...

The Rise of Rome

Advantages: Original, intriguing music
Disadvantages: No one has heard of them... no one will buy it

...The cover of this album was the first thing that intrigued me. Stylish green-grey throughout, and with a picture of some (presumably) Roman statues on the cover, the look alone of this album made me stop and wonder what sort of music it was going to be. That's not something that happens especially often- most times you only need to give an album cover a cursory glance to see exactly what you can expect- a good way for marketing teams within media companies to help keep the same people reaching for the same things on the shelves? The music is as enigmatic as the cover art and song titles, an effect which is enhanced further by there being virtually no information about the band themselves on the CD or digipack itself. From the first track, Der Zeitsturm, Rome appear to be quietly subverting my expectations (whatever they may have been...

Diamond review  Amazing Rome

Advantages: History, lots of things too see and so, food, amazing museums, Gelato
Disadvantages: Too much to see, crowded around major sight, fear of being pickpocketed

...A short summary This trip report will focus on the trip that my wife Nikki and I took to Rome in the period from July 2nd - 7th 2005. We targeted out places that we wanted to see during our trip. On our list was the usual stuff such as the Vatican, Pantheon, Piazza di Spagna, Colosseum, Forum, Capitol etc. With all of this on the list there was no rest for the wicked :-) Please visit my homepage http://gardkarlsen.com to see pictures from our trip. Get in touch if you have any questions or comments. Prelude A couple of years back we went to Milan and Venice and we had a great time there. I guess we decided that we had to return one day to check out some other Italian cities and especially Rome. After all Rome is one of the classical destinations along with places like Paris, New York City, London etc. Our chance came when we were...
