FREE DVDs

Advantages: Free trial, large choice, post included, new realeases
Disadvantages: see review

...I like movies and I like freebies, so when you get offered both in one swoop you?re bound to accept! I used my two week free trial with this company and remained with them for a couple of monthsbefore moving on to try many other companies free trials (and winning a new DVD player on Tesco DVD rental site on their free trial offer). I then had an email from DVDs 365 asking me to go back, and offering me a free DVD if I did so. I had just left Tesco (with my new DVD player) so I chose to go back with them. ∆◊◊ THE SERVICE THEY OFFER ∆◊◊ Basically it?s like going to a video shop and hiring films on DVD, except you don?t pay for each film you chose ? rather a monthly fee for which you can watch as many movies as you can fit in, for us this is usually around 8 a month (2 a week usually weekends...

The Keys to the Moody Blues

Advantages: Evergreen, ever popular, ever on tour, ever the Moody Blues
Disadvantages: None

...It seems that The Moody Blues have been there as long as there has been rock music itself. They have produced their own distinctive and unique sound for over 35 years on fourteen different albums. If you are a fan of the Moodies then you won?t need any review to know what to expect from their output. You will probably have enjoyed their many live performances - which continue to this day. The Moody years fall into two parts; divided by a break in the early 70s. Conceived in the mid 1960s as a meld of rock group and classical influences, they have consistently produced an intense, powerful, melodic wall of sound. The hallmark of the lyrics of the songs is that they say something about the human condition and that the diction in the vocals is clear over the music. After the first album (Days of Future Passed), which featured a full...

Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

...At first I wasn't convinced by up-scaling DVD player technology but was persuaded after reading an article in "What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision" magazine. Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied. On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. All the components such as cables, remote and manuals were well presented in their own protective plastic bags, to keep them protected. The player...

Moody's Prom Night

Advantages: Solid Moody's performance; still going strong
Disadvantages: None that the aficianado won't forgive

...The Moody Blues took to the stage of the Royal Albert Hall, London (home of the Prom concerts) on May 1st 2000 towards the end of their latest world tour. Billed here as the ?Hall Of Fame? tour we saw a concert with a very similar running order at The Ice Palace, Tampa, Florida on August 15th 1999. It was then presented as ?World Tour 1999/2000? and was being used to launch the new album ?Strange Times? (which coincidentally) was released the day after the Tampa show. Almost every concert was played with an orchestra. The Moodys were backed here by The World Festival Orchestra conducted by Larry Bair ? who had produced most of the arrangements. There was a full house and a wrapt, appreciative and well behaved audience (perhaps awed and inspired by the august red and gold surroundings of this world famous venue). The band were in good...

Review of Hall Of Fame - Moody Blues (The)

The first true Moodies album

Advantages: Original, psychedelic, distinctive Moodys sound
Disadvantages: Quite short

...This album was the second produced by the Moody Blues for the Decca Record label but strictly speaking it is the group's first solo album. This disc was on the edge of flower power and the acid culture. The songs are a pastiche of the eastern, psychedelic and mystical. The words are used as auditory colours - and often the meaning may be somewhat obscure. All members of the band achieve this but the greatest exponent is Justin Hayward who can shade words and music to paint any mood. The line up is Justin Hayward, John Lodge, Mike Pinder, Ray Thomas and Graeme Edge. The range of instruments played by the band is prodigious: guitars (electric, acoustic, 12 string, bass), sitar, tables, piano, Mellotrons, harpsichord, cello, auto-harp, drums, snare drum, timpani, tambourine, flute, saxophone. Uncharacteristic of later albums, 'Lost...

The Other Side of the Moodys

Advantages: A couple of superb songs and my all time favourite track
Disadvantages: A filler album really

...This album comes from the middle period of the second phase of the Moody Blues history. The line up had consolidated following the loss of Mike Pinder and Patrick Moraz was established as the keyboard player. The last but one album (?Long distance Voyager?) had been a huge success and the loyal fans continued to flock to the British and American tours. ?The Other Side? presents a heavier sound than most previous albums. There is still the presence of the driving beat and the ?wall of sound? that became the group?s hallmark. However the tracks themselves are somewhat repetitive in nature and apart from one ballad there is a lack of the distinctive and plaintive lyrics this time from Justin Hayward. It is relatively short at 42 minutes playing time. Released in May 1986, it reached a peak at No.9 in the US album charts and No.24 in...

Battlefield Earth - L.Ron.Hubbard

Advantages: Its Ok
Disadvantages: Its Just Ok, No More

...Battlefield Earth. Author - L. Ron. Hubbard. Have read a few of his books and have seen the film, so I thought I'd give the book a go. The review will be short and concise, so you can probably already guess what I thought of the book. Synopsis. ~~~~~~~ For over a thousand years Earth has been conquered and ruled over by a race of humanoid beings called the Psychlos. Free humans live in only the remotest parts of the planet and number only in the thousands. But the Psychlos are always in need of new slaves and hunt the remaining humans mercilessly. They need them to mine and strip the Earth of all its mineral wealth and resources. Enter our hero, Jonnie, who is restless and leaves the mountains to explore the nearby valley. However, Jonnie is captured by Terl, the Psychlo security chief for Earth (Played in...

Ron Weasley figure

Advantages: Looks like Ron, durable
Disadvantages: small wand accessory

...Perfect Harry Potter figure for collectors and for kids to play with! Ron Weasley is Harrys best friend and a must have figure for any fans. This figure looks just like Ron from the films but the figures are based on the 5th film Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. This figure comes with Rons wand and his patronus when bought as a single figure. If bought as part of a set he will only come with his wand as an accessory. The wand is obviously quite small and easy to lose unless you take extra special care or attach it to the figures hand with sellotape or blu tack!! This figure is approximately 3 and 3/4 inches tall in proportion with the rest of the Harry Potter figures. The figures I find are very durable and tough and should withstand play by children. They do have an age limit of 4+ as they come with the wand...

THE FIRST TRUE MOODIES ALBUM - MB2 RE RELEASED

Advantages: Original, psychedelic, distinctive Moodys sound, an extra hour of music
Disadvantages: The album without the extras is rather short

...It may seem strange to be reviewing an album that first saw the light of day nearly 40 years ago. However the Moody Blues have maintained their popularity and their loyal fan base through three generations and (down to three of the original members now) are about to embark on another UK tour. In 2003 Universal Music embarked on a project to re-master the first five of the Moody Blues albums from the original tapes using modern production techniques. They also decided to issue additional tracks - alternative takes and versions - which were not included on the final album. This is the 2006 deluxe SACD edition. DISC ONE: THE ALBUM This album was the second produced by the Moody Blues for the Decca Record label but strictly speaking it is the group's first solo album. That year it reached number 5 in the UK album chart and 23 in...

If Ron Burgundy says it... it's the truth!

Advantages: A Comedy thats actually funny all the way through
Disadvantages: No duff moments, get away from me!

...It was a time of heroes, a time when men we're men and women had 'tiny little brains' Ron Burgundy was the man who brought you the news, a mans man, mans mans man, and a ladies man. In fact There was a time before cable, a time when people believed everything they heard on TV. This was an age when only men were allowed to read the news. It was an age when the local anchorman reigned supreme. In San Diego one man was more man then the rest. His name was Ron Burgundy. He was like a God walking amongst mere mortals. He had a voice that could make a wolverine purr and suits so fine they made Sinatra look like a hobo. In other words, Ron Burgundy, was the balls! Will Ferrell (Elf, Old School, Zoolander) plays the amazing Ron Burgundy, king of San Diego news. He and his news team, Brian Fantana, man on the streets and all round...
