Ronnie Barker in silent shocker?

Advantages: I guess it's nice to see familiar faces
Disadvantages: Annoying, unfunny, jangling music

...old as me!), and was written by, and starred, the late, lamented Ronnie Barker. It is almost a silent film, in that none of the actors actually say anything coherent, although we do hear them grunt, gurgle and make other unintelligible noises. And there is a soundtrack that includes music and other noises - by 'other noises', I mean sounds such as the flushing of toilets (a big part of this film), the moving of objects and the clinking of plates and glasses. Sounds weird? It is. But is it funny? Well, obviously some people find it so - look at the entry for Futtocks End on imdb.com as proof - but I personally thought it was dire. There are two main characters really. One is Colonel Futtock, played by Ronnie Barker. Futtock is a bumbling old man, set in his ways and fond of his privacy. However, the house party does mean that he gets...

Ultimate? Not quite, but still brill...

Advantages: Contains 2 entire multiple disc series
Disadvantages: Not everyone favourites included, most of these repeated on satellite

...staple fare on satellite, so why bother investing in this set? In investing in this set, you can watch whatever you please whenever, there are no annoying breaks and some extras on some of the DVDs. Porridge ------------ Every one somewhere must know the name Norman Stanley Fletcher, arguably Ronnie Barker's most famous character. I won't dwell too much here just to say it was et in Slade prision following the batle between 'them and us' with plenty of laughs on the way. My personal favourite occurs in the first episode when they receive their medicals. Remember the flasks? This set presents you with all the episodes and the Christmas specials. These specials are 40 minutes long but there are only two of them, although to make the disc worth buying, they have included Johnny Vaughn praising off Porridge as part of the BBC's Great...

FREE DVDs

Advantages: Free trial, large choice, post included, new realeases
Disadvantages: see review

...I like movies and I like freebies, so when you get offered both in one swoop you?re bound to accept! I used my two week free trial with this company and remained with them for a couple of monthsbefore moving on to try many other companies free trials (and winning a new DVD player on Tesco DVD rental site on their free trial offer). I then had an email from DVDs 365 asking me to go back, and offering me a free DVD if I did so. I had just left Tesco (with my new DVD player) so I chose to go back with them. ∆◊◊ THE SERVICE THEY OFFER ∆◊◊ Basically it?s like going to a video shop and hiring films on DVD, except you don?t pay for each film you chose ? rather a monthly fee for which you can watch as many movies as you can fit in, for us this is usually around 8 a month (2 a week usually weekends...

Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

...At first I wasn't convinced by up-scaling DVD player technology but was persuaded after reading an article in "What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision" magazine. Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied. On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. All the components such as cables, remote and manuals were well presented in their own protective plastic bags, to keep them protected. The player...

Rocket Ronnie

Advantages: Great player when focused
Disadvantages: falls apart at the last hurdle.

...The talented lad from Essex is again storming his way through player after player in the the World Championship in Sheffield. But I ask...." How long before he suffers yet another cruel defeat at the hands of a weaker opponent?" Famous for his family background as much as his playing, Ronnie is the Gazza of the Snooker world. The Chigwell boy scored the fastest ever 147 maximum clearance last year with ease in just 5 minutes 20 seconds. A feat considered unthinkable a few years back with snails like Cliff Thorburn and John Spencer. He scored his first 100 break at the age of 10, when most children have not even yet held a cue or played on a proper table. At 15 he scored his first maximum break in a tournament. A promising talent for the future. With all of the success of winning the Irish masters and various other...

Jazzing it up at Ronnie Scott's

Advantages: Great music, easy to get to, not too expensive
Disadvantages: Getting home again, seating not very comfortable

...My husband is a fan of jazz, and plays the saxophone too, so for Christmas I booked him (and me) a night out at Ronnie Scott's jazz club in central London. After all, it's best to buy Christmas presents for other people that you'll get the benefit from too, right?! The date I chose (14 January) featured a jazz saxophonist plus a support act consisting of a jazz singer and backing band. Neither of us are particular fans of jazz singing, but despite that we had a great time. We'd had to give a time to the venue when I booked the tickets, which cost £25 each - this was the latest time we would arrive by, and if we weren't there around 30 minutes after that time, our table could be sold on to other customers. So, getting to the area about an hour in advance of the time I'd specified, we had a quick drink in the pub on Old Compton...

Mister B. Gone - an unusual book for Clive Barker

Advantages: Easy to read
Disadvantages: A bit repetitive

...I have read most of Clive Barker's books which are often set in strange worlds (Weaveworld, Abarat) and have come to expect the unexpected from him. However, even bearing this in mind, this short book (only 248 pages in the paperback edition) still came as a bit of a surprise. It's unusual for Clive Barker to write such a short book, and to have so few major characters involved. It's also unusual for him to use one of the few major characters as a narrator. Jakabok Botch (the Mister B. of the title) speaks directly to the reader throughout, starting with explaining just how even for a demon he is hideously disfigured. After being tempted by a piece of steak and a can of beer on a line he is "fished" up through several "Circles" into our World circa the 14th/15th century. After escaping his captors quickly Mister B's narrative...

Review of Mister B. Gone - Clive Barker

And it's goodnight from them?

Advantages: Excellently written comedy and superb delivery
Disadvantages: The extra features

...Where do I begin with this review? How can I do justice to one of the best British comedy shows of all Time? As a child I can remember being glued to TV with my parents, rolling on the floor with laughter whenever it was screened (and these were just the repeats!). I was deeply saddened to learn that the genius that was Ronnie Barker had passed away, and I felt compelled to write a review as a small tribute to one of his most admiral pieces of work. The Two Ronnies have recently been voted the best comedy duo of all time, some might argue Morcombe and Wise are most deserved of this honour, but when you watch this retrospective DVD of the Two Ronnies Show, it is not hard to see why this is. ***The Show*** The show comprised of 6-8 episodes containing of several hilarious sketches, which depicted outrageous situations. The stars...

Review of The Two Ronnies The Very Best Of The Two Ronnies (DVD)

A book you'll rocket right through

Advantages: very honest
Disadvantages: none

...Like Jimmy White, Ronnie O'Sullivan's autobiography has a picture of him smoking on the cover. The similarities don't end there; both snooker players have a reputation on the baize for being great players, and off the baize for their wild and uncontrollable antics. However, unlike Jimmy White's 'Behind the White', Ronnie's autobiography is an excellent read and a brilliant book. Despite being the best snooker player around, Ronnie is well known for a destructive streak that has been known to get him in trouble - punching tables, biting off cue tips, and even grazing his own face on TV have seen him fined, criticised and ridiculed, but the fact remains that this guy is simply the best out there at snooker, so love him or hate him you can't ignore him! 'Ronnie' can be broken down into three areas, all of which are very interesting...

Review of Ronnie - Ronnie O'sullivan

Laugh everybody laugh

Advantages: stupid, funny, great characters
Disadvantages: stupid, very stupid!

...Run Ronnie Run is an odd little comedy gem, it is very reminiscent of the channel 4 sitcom ?My Name Is Earl?, at least the main characters in Earl remind me a lot of Ronnie and his friends. They could very easily fit into the Earl ?world? and not look out of place. The star of Run Ronnie Run (RRR) is one Ronnie Dobbs, a mullet haired idiot who is pretty close to being stereotypical trailer park trash. He drinks all day long and with his best friend Clay (David Koechner ? Snakes On A Plane) gets into all sorts of trouble with the local Police. One night the TV show ?Fuzz? (basically ?Cops? that US follow the Police documentary like series) is in his town and films the local Police chasing Ronnie through a trailer park. His excuses once caught are hilarious and when he is again arrested on camera later on, once again in stupid...
