Netgear WPN824 Wireless router

Advantages: Wireless and Wired connections, easy to install
Disadvantages: Blue ring of light can be annoying, but can also be turned off!

...I have recently exchanged my Belkin router for the Netgear WPN824 as I was experiencing regular disconnections with my Belkin and found their customer support was not very good. I opted for the Netgear after various recommendations from friends and reading the reviews on ciao. The Netgear has a nice sleek, modern looking design and has a ring of Blue LEDs on the top that flash/rotate when connected wirelessly. Personally, I find these be a little annoying at night because they are quite bright but they can easily be turned off via a switch on the back. It also comes with stands so it can be put in an upright position. It has some nice green flashing lights on the front to show when each computer is connected to it and wether it has internet connection (as most routers do). This model has a wireless connection speed of 108mbps...

NetGear DG834N Wireless Router

Advantages: Great stable router with great range and speed

...the maximum speeds and ranges will not be attainable by them. As it happens none of my devices have the Netgear USB adaptor so my speeds are restricted to the 54Mbs which is sufficient for my needs. My experience of routers has been limited. This is my 4th router and only the second one that I?ve ever purchased. The other 2 came free with my broadband supplier. I replaced my old router (supplied free by BE Unlimited) because it simply couldn?t handle the number of devices I had and would reset about once every day. In contrast, the DG834N has never reset once in the 3 months that I?ve had it. It is very stable even when I have many devices connected to it. As a test I connected the following all at the same time: Xbox, PSP, Wireless Printer, WAC Music Server, 2x WACS Music Clients, laptop, desktop and all of them connected for days in some cases...

...In short: Excellent router, easy to set up and good support from Netgear. I bought this modem router from Ebay to set up a wireless home network. Depsite paying AOL money each month and seeing new customers getting this router for free we were told that we would still have to purchase it separately. As this was one of the AOL compatible routers I plumped for it due to Netgear's good name. The router was installed easyily and using AOL software from their site my main computer was up and running using an ethernet cable. We did have a couple of problems setting up our two laptops to work wirelessly but one short call to Netgear and that was all sorted out. Netgear DGN200 Wireless Router what a pain

Advantages: good when finally installed
Disadvantages: hard to install

...I admit my computer knowledge is limited but I was led to believe this was an easy product to install on my home computer. I thought the instructions seemed easy to follow but when steps didn't go to plan I became stuck and confused. Next steps I phoned thecustomer helpline and was greeted with questions I didn't know the answer to and probally wouldn't have unless I had a degree in computing. All I can say is what a waste of my time trying to set this router up. I resulted in asking a good friend that works within the computer industry to come and help install the router. They said this wasn't an uncommon problem but does need improvement for everyday people to use. Now it is finally installed properly I have a working home network and haven't come across too many problems....

Netgear DG834GT, top wireless router

Advantages: fast, easy to set up, good signal strength
Disadvantages: slightly more expensive

...with the router on my desktop pc as it didn't have a wireless card. That was equally as simple i just plugged it into a free usb port it dected the router and that was it. The signal strength is really good and speed when transfering files between computers is fast as well. My final concern with setting up a wireless network was security, but following the simple instructions on the router a secure network with password verification was easy to set up. This is more expensive than some other routers but its faster the signal strength is good and it has everything you need right out of the box....

...I used modems supplied my my internet service provider and experienced problems with connectivity and drop out. In the end I got so sick of phoning the ISPs to report problems to be given the same twaddle (updating drivers etc.) that I went into my local branch of PC World and asked for their recommendation. The Netgear DG834G was the salesman's recommendation. It cost £50 and has been one of the better purchases I have made. My desk top PC and now my son's laptop use the same router and the wireless signal has never failed. We do not suffer from connectivity issues and trust the routers security to protect us from freeloaders and hackers. I would personally recommend this router type over those supplied by service providers....

...the compatible card installed and working otherwise we cannot test this router's wireless connection. Installation of the router is pretty straight-forward from the provided CD and you follow it's easy setup guide. This takes you through the configuration of the whole router starting first with it's SSID name, it's WEP WPA security settings and your internet connection details...etc.. I like the fact that this is all done for you with the easy setup wizard. As soon as you have internet connection, the routers firewall automatically protects you from the internet nasties but you may wish to have a software firewall enabled as a security backup, for this I enabled the Windows XP firewall which works flawlessly with the router. On some software firewalls they can constantly bug you but not the windows one. Next you may wish to tweak the router...

...The Netgear DG834PN is the latest version of the DG834 and combines an ADSL modem with a wireless router and 4 port switch. In plain English, this plugs in your phone socket and allows one or more PCs to share the connection via either a wired or wireless link. The modem part is ADSL2+ ready and should work with even the fastest ISP offerings out there which as at Dec 2006 are around 12mbps in the UK. The setup wizard worked flawlessly and apart from the username and password, worked everything else out for itself and had the DG834PN up and running in a couple of minutes. As with most similar devices, further configuration is done via a web interface. The wireless section supports 802.11b and 802.11g as well as Netgear's own 802.11 Super G variant offering 108Mbps. ...Mbit download with this router had I been next door to the BT Exchange so it?s not the router?s fault (more this country?s shoddy broadband technology). I have since downgraded to BE?s 8Mbit package and I do get just under 8Mbit download most of the time so it?s not bad. Someone else I know has this same router and he gets 11Mbit on his O2 connection. In terms of the broadband connection, aside from ISP problems, I don?t believe the router caused any down time. However, one thing I don?t like about the routers' configuration pages is that there is no option to restart the router, meaning I need to unplug and plug it back in. I prefer to be able to do things remotely for convenience. WIRELESS It has a 300Mbit wireless, which is very fast and is of course, using the newer Wireless N standard providing the extra speed and range...
