Netgear WPN824 Wireless router

Advantages: Wireless and Wired connections, easy to install
Disadvantages: Blue ring of light can be annoying, but can also be turned off!

...I have recently exchanged my Belkin router for the Netgear WPN824 as I was experiencing regular disconnections with my Belkin and found their customer support was not very good. I opted for the Netgear after various recommendations from friends and reading the reviews on ciao. The Netgear has a nice sleek, modern looking design and has a ring of Blue LEDs on the top that flash/rotate when connected wirelessly. Personally, I find these be a little annoying at night because they are quite bright but they can easily be turned off via a switch on the back. It also comes with stands so it can be put in an upright position. It has some nice green flashing lights on the front to show when each computer is connected to it and wether it has internet connection (as most routers do). This model has a wireless connection speed of 108mbps...

NetGear DG834N Wireless Router

...the maximum speeds and ranges will not be attainable by them. As it happens none of my devices have the Netgear USB adaptor so my speeds are restricted to the 54Mbs which is sufficient for my needs. My experience of routers has been limited. This is my 4th router and only the second one that I?ve ever purchased. The other 2 came free with my broadband supplier. I replaced my old router (supplied free by BE Unlimited) because it simply couldn?t handle the number of devices I had and would reset about once every day. In contrast, the DG834N has never reset once in the 3 months that I?ve had it. It is very stable even when I have many devices connected to it. As a test I connected the following all at the same time: Xbox, PSP, Wireless Printer, WAC Music Server, 2x WACS Music Clients, laptop, desktop and all of them connected for days in some cases...

Netgear DGN200 Wireless Router what a pain

Advantages: good when finally installed
Disadvantages: hard to install

...I admit my computer knowledge is limited but I was led to believe this was an easy product to install on my home computer. I thought the instructions seemed easy to follow but when steps didn't go to plan I became stuck and confused. Next steps I phoned thecustomer helpline and was greeted with questions I didn't know the answer to and probally wouldn't have unless I had a degree in computing. All I can say is what a waste of my time trying to set this router up. I resulted in asking a good friend that works within the computer industry to come and help install the router. They said this wasn't an uncommon problem but does need improvement for everyday people to use. Now it is finally installed properly I have a working home network and haven't come across too many problems....

...In short: Excellent router, easy to set up and good support from Netgear. I bought this modem router from Ebay to set up a wireless home network. Depsite paying AOL money each month and seeing new customers getting this router for free we were told that we would still have to purchase it separately. As this was one of the AOL compatible routers I plumped for it due to Netgear's good name. The router was installed easyily and using AOL software from their site my main computer was up and running using an ethernet cable. We did have a couple of problems setting up our two laptops to work wirelessly but one short call to Netgear and that was all sorted out. If you don't have laptops with built in wireless capability I would recommend getting the compatible wireless adapters from Netgear, these also are installed very easily. Even...

Advantages: fast, easy to set up, good signal strength
Disadvantages: slightly more expensive

...with the router on my desktop pc as it didn't have a wireless card. That was equally as simple i just plugged it into a free usb port it dected the router and that was it. The signal strength is really good and speed when transfering files between computers is fast as well. My final concern with setting up a wireless network was security, but following the simple instructions on the router a secure network with password verification was easy to set up. This is more expensive than some other routers but its faster the signal strength is good and it has everything you need right out of the box....

...I used modems supplied my my internet service provider and experienced problems with connectivity and drop out. In the end I got so sick of phoning the ISPs to report problems to be given the same twaddle (updating drivers etc.) that I went into my local branch of PC World and asked for their recommendation. The Netgear DG834G was the salesman's recommendation. It cost £50 and has been one of the better purchases I have made. My desk top PC and now my son's laptop use the same router and the wireless signal has never failed. We do not suffer from connectivity issues and trust the routers security to protect us from freeloaders and hackers. I would personally recommend this router type over those supplied by service providers....

Netgear DG834G v2 - lovely piece of kit

Advantages: stylish, robust, wide range of features, WiFi and wired connectivity
Disadvantages: drops connection during lightning storms, manual slim on advanced features

.... Install the software on your PC and link it up either wirelessly, or plug an ethernet cable from the router to your PC (not provided). You will then need to follow the instructions to setup the router by connecting to it from your PC. There are 4 hardwired ports in the back, so you connect up to 4 PCs/laptops via ethernet cables - or you can connect up to it via WiFi - I'm not sure how many it will support that way, but it's definitely more than 4 (and as far as I know, no limit is indicated). The router itself is a stylish piece of kit, and uses 802.11b and 802.11g, which were the latest standards a couple of years ago. the 802.11b was (and I guess still is) being used everywhere, and the 802.11g standard was a faster standard, but wasn't available in most places. I bought a NetGear WiFi USB adapter for my older laptop to connect up...

SECURITY ~~~~~~~~~ To connect to the router wirelessly you have to enter a network key on your PC. This was provided by sky. You only need to do this once and then it is stored on your computer for the next time you connect to the internet. This prevents other from using your wireless connection as without the network key they cannot connect to your router. You can gain access to your router by entering the routers IP address ( again supplied by sky) into the internet explorer address bar. This allows you to configure your routers options and settings. You do not need to change anything but this may be useful to the more advanced user...

Router minefield!!!

...When looking to go wireless in the computer world it is an absolute minefield when it comes to wireless routers/modems. I sat at my latop(tethered to the telephone socket with wires) scouring google for write ups about this router and that router when i came across this one. Now this is rated as being the best selling router/modem in the UK and has been for some time. I think i paid around £40 from ebuyer.com. I chose it because of the fact its reasonably priced. Its a good trustworthy brand and it seemed to come up to scratch on speed. Upon opening the box the installation was very simple indeed. I just followed the instructions that came with the router and hey prsto i was wireless on my laptop.Software is easy to install and self explanatory. Its not the fastest band of router on the market but for what i needed it was ample...
