Rover 214 Si 16 valve

Advantages: quality, power to insurance group ratio
Disadvantages: bit of an old man image

...I will have owned my 1998 Rover 214 Si for three weeks on Monday, and so far i have been loving it. I came accross it while trawling around second hand car garages looking for a 1.4 Ford Escort Osprey to replace my Fiesta Sapphire, which as it happens required a new engine. The brooklands green paint linked with a beige paisley patterned interior was a nice combination, if a little old manny. The curvy, rounded lines looked tidy, with the chrome grill and trim strips being nice details. Throw in the standard smoked rear light lenses, the discrete rear spoiler and deep front air scoop under the number plate and you've got a smart and sophisticated wee car. Standard equipment on the 200 is not bad, power steering, height adjustable steering wheel, drivers airbag, engine immobiliser, 60/40 split fold rear seats, tinted windows...

My first car, and my first Rover!

Advantages: Cheap to buy, fantastic free revving K series engine, good spec, fantastic looks, great handling

...Well I thought it was time I wrote a review on the very first car I ever owned. This is the story of my Rover 214Si. I was 19 years old when I started to learn to drive and look for that all important first car. I considered all makes and models ranging from vauxhall, ford and peugeot but I never came across anything that really tickled my fancy. My friend at the time owned a Rover 414i which I knew was cheap on insurance, cheap to run and tax and after having been in his I knew it packed a punch and sounded brilliant! The 400 though for me at the time was just a little too big looking and rather unsporty. However I put Rover into the search on autotrader and came across the 200 and it was love at first site! I opted for the 1.4 engine rather than the 1.1 because I heard the 1.4 offered more economy and performance...

Rover 214 SLI

Advantages: Cheap to buy and run, nice to drive, comfortable, don't rust
Disadvantages: Some people knock them

...has adjustable steering wheel and lumbar suport, which is brilliant as you can pump the seat up or down!. The car is also well equiped with electric windows, power steering, electric door mirrows, electric sunroof, remote central door locking with a rover alarm & imobilizer, and a Airbag not bad for a 95 model. If you by a 200 go for the mid range sli with costs only a couple of hundred more but as lots more equipment compared to the si. The engine is also a gem, it's 1.4 multi point fuel injected 16 valve twin quam engine is so good, it produces a healthy 103bhp something it's rivals can only dream off, as you can imagine it's quite quick off the mark leaving much bigger cars amazed. Sad, Rover news!

Advantages: Roomy and very comfortable car to drive
Disadvantages: Its currently sat on the drive!!

ORIGINAL REVIEW Before I bought my current car - the Rover 214 Si, I took a few cars for a test drive. All were around the same price but this car stood out by far, with power steering, remote centrol locking, immobilizer & alarm and drivers airbag. In my opinion, this is a brilliant little car. Rover 214 SLi

Advantages: Reliable and many great features as standard
Disadvantages: Electrics often worn or inoperative

...! The Rover 214 SLi is not a poser's car. If you are thinking of buying your 17 year old son one, make sure he's seen it and approves. It could, quite possibly be the least cool car ever. This is mainly because a large majority of my generation vaguely remember our fathers having them as company cars in the mid-1990's and the walnut trim hardly adds street cred. If however you want a reliable work horse with a quality interior, many features and a solid engine, get a 214 SLi. The other model is the 214 Si. The "L" missing from the model name stands for "Luxury". This model has none of the fancy refinements such as the electric windows and mirrors etc, but I believe still comes with Power steering. Check this however when buying. These cars are also reliable - possibly more so because they have far less to go wrong! Personally I would still hunt...

...The Rover 214SLI was produced by Rover in collaboration with Honda, hence many of the layout features and buttons you find on this car are the same as many Honda produced in the same era. I originally started driving a 214SLI after I passed my test in April 2001 (oh, just realised I've been driving near on three years now, but thats an aside!). This car was an red H reg and was owned by my parents, and I was put on the insurance to allow me to get some freedom without having the expense of owning my own car and insuring it straight after passing. What it looks like = The Rover 214 has the same shape as a lot of Rovers at that time (ie, the 216, 414, 416 etc). It is fairly long and wide (although not to Volvo standards!) and is available in a variety of engine sizes and 3 and 5 door varietys. The model numbers...

  Scream if you wanna go faster

Advantages: Cheap, starts first time.
Disadvantages: People get put off by the Rover badge

We then set about buying various car finder magazines and checking out the adverts for car dealers - considering we'd be handing over a large sum of money we decided this would be the safest option. Eventually we found a Rover 214si (basically a Rover 25) for sale and although initially put off by the idea of driving a Rover I was won over by it. My particular model was a T-reg, metallic silver (although I call it the metallic mushroom as it's not a true sparkly silver), alloys, full Rover service history, 18,000 miles, 5 doors, electric sunroof, remote central locking, immobiliser, power steering, driver airbag and all for £2350. My Rover experience

Advantages: Pure British car.....
Disadvantages: ....with a Japanese engine :-(

...I bought ym Rover about 8 months ago now in May 2005, and during then i have not had many problems with the car, depsite the fact that it is the same age as me, 1988. --------------------- The reliability --------------------- Although some people i know, and other reviews i have read regarding this car, tend to believe that this car is hugely unreliable, having had it and used it both for long and short distances over the 8 months, i can safely say for its age, the car is fairly reliable. Although getting recovered because the car can't quite make a 200 mile drive due to both the starter motor and alternator dying on me isnt great fun on a dark night in the rain. Rover 827 Si

Advantages: Large car, very smooth ride, excellent all round visibility
Disadvantages: Not a very good car for a towny, fuel compsumption doubles on the urban cycle.

...I bought one of these three years ago, it was the closest thing I could get to a Rover SD1. A 2.7 V6 injection engine delivering some 172 bHp, with an automatic transmission, this is a 1500kg car that'll nearly always win at the traffic light takeoff. It cruises supremely, a two hour trip feels like you have just popped to the local shop, big bucket seats, air con, and electric everything, one of the most comfortable cars I have ever driven!
