Advantages: Very funny at times and two outstanding gags

Will The Real Rowan Atkinson Please Stand Up

Advantages: funny, witty, feel-good film, Rowan Atkinson
Disadvantages: none that I can think of

...Rowan Atkinson is a comic genius. I can remember him in the experimental comedy series Not The Nine O’ Clock News in 1979, along with other great comedians – Mel Smith, Griff Rhys-Jones and Billy Connolly. (Oh, and Pamela Stephenson was in it too.) Since then, he has appeared in many of my favourite films and TV programmes – The Lion King (as the voice of Zazu), Bean, The Thin Blue Line, the wonderful Blackadder series, as the vicar in the hilarious Four Weddings And A Funeral, and not forgetting as the Ninth Doctor in the 1999 Comic Relief Dr. Who special! With a name like Rowan Sebastian Atkinson, perhaps a career making people laugh was inevitable? Or maybe it was his decision to take a degree in Engineering at Oxford that made him so incredibly entertaining? Whatever it was, he was destined for the limelight...

Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54

Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.

...At first I wasn't convinced by up-scaling DVD player technology but was persuaded after reading an article in "What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision" magazine. Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied. On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. Advantages: Good introductory to Sci FI Genre
Disadvantages: Some areas are written in a simplistic style

...The outline of the story is based upon the colonising of space by humans who use the 'Talents' (people possessing Telepathic and -TKelekinsis abilities). The book revolves around a Talended young girl called Rowan where we explore her life from her early age when her family dies to a young woman. As a reader I also was able to understand the personal developments she makes whilst growing into a young woman and understanding her Talent abilities. Her relationships with other Talents and 'normal' humans can make compeling reading and from the descriptive writing you can picture Rowan growing from a young child to a young woman. Another theme of the book is a alien threat from the Hive who are a bettle type being. The Hive seem to have a style that is similar to the humble bumble bee, but are more aggressive in nature...

More than just a simple murder mystery...

Advantages: Not just one mystery to ponder over.
Disadvantages: The Land sisters irritated me at times.

...don't immediately become taken with the feeling of 'I've met this guy before...' as his character comes across as original, and you actually want to know more about his past, rather than slugging through uninteresting pages of it. However the disappearance of Olivia Land isn't the only 'mystery' to keep you going with this book. Indeed there are a few other cases Jackson suddenly has to investigate; certainly more interesting than trying to the latest missing cat by that mad old lady. We are introduced straight away to these other cases and the characters involving them, and Kate Atkinson has done this without causing any confusion to the reader. Not once did I find themself turning back the pages to find who was who, but more that I was racing forward, wanting to know the answers behind these cases! One case involves the unsolved...

Family Fortunes!

Advantages: A great read

...I have always enjoyed Rowan Coleman's books so I'm always pleased when I spot a new one of hers. I was especially pleased when I picked up The Accidental Family because I realised it is a sequel to one of her earlier books - The Accidental Mother. I had read this a while ago and really enjoyed it so it was interesting to see what happened to the characters afterwards. Having said that though, The Accidental Family can be read as a stand alone novel although it does have an added value if you read The Accidental Mother first. In the first book Sophie Mills suddenly finds herself looking after her best friend's two daughters after a fatal car accident. At the end of the book, the girls' long lost father has reappeared and Sophie has fallen in love with him. They all move to Cornwall and this second book follows what happens as they start...

Dark, macabre murder mystery

Advantages: Beautifully written, engaging plots, believeable female characters
Disadvantages: Main character a little lacking, possibly disappointing for crime fans

...cats belonging to old ladies with only the odd unsolved murder case to provide a bit of interest. Interwoven with the story of the Land sisters are a number of other cases Jackson is investigating: the unsolved murder of seventeen year old Laura Wyre, throat slashed seemingly randomly, leaving her single parent father heartbroken and obsessive about trying to track down her killer. The case of Michelle, a new mother, who twenty-five years ago sliced through her husband's head with an axe as if it were a pumpkin on Halloween. I was initially dubious about how much I would enjoy this book - although I am a big Kate Atkinson fan and count her first novels, Behind the Scenes at the Museum and Human Croquet, as two of my favourite books, I am not a particularly big fan of the crime genre.
