...Where do I start? These guys are the absolute pits are far as banks go. I have been a customer with these guys for over 10 years and never had any problems until a couple of months ago. It all started when I cancelled a standing order for my rent. This was cancelled as per my request and then several days later I was charged £35 for it not being paid! When I went into the branch to query this they told me I should have cancelled the standing order 3 days before it was due to be taken. The bimbo that served me advised that the teller who served was "new" and should have advised me of this. Got the £35 back after a rather "heated" discussion with the teller. At one point they offered me a consolidation loan which I agreed to and spent hours sorting out only to be refused as my credit wasn't good enough! Why frickin' bother...

Me and banks

Advantages: All round a great service

I'd left Lloyds after a year or so because I ran up a big overdraft when I first started working, and I'd moved onto NatWest, only for them to pull the rug from under me, forcing me off to the Co-op bank, where I stayed for quite some time, before getting into difficulties again. In every case, I'd been fairly appalled by the attitude of managers at each of these banks - they were fine when you were doing okay and couldn't wait to throw dosh at you, but as soon as things took a turn for the worse they were soon after your hide. Re-mortgaging with the Royal Bank of Scotland

Advantages: Friendly personal service.
Disadvantages: None that I know of!

Unluckily for me, it turned out to be Royal Bank of Scotland. Being a little biased and overpatriotic I thought it would be a good thing to join a Scottish bank. This bank is horrendous!!

Advantages: Brilliant online banking
Disadvantages: too many!!

...tried to tell us that we needed this insurance but the truth of the matter was that if we had needed to claim they wouldn't have given us a penny as we didn't own the property. After a few letters back and forth the eventually refunded £180. I really want to change banks but seeing some of the other reviews I can't really decide on which bank to choose. All banks have their flaws, no one is perfect. Certainly not The Royal Bank of Scotland. Thank you to anyone who has spared the time and the willpower to read my long review....

PC Banking with the Royal Bank of Scotland

Advantages: You'll never need to visit your bank again.
Disadvantages: Security errors when they arise.

Being relatively new to the internet I was weary of signing up, although knowing how easy the telephone banking service was I decided to give it a try. RBS Direct Banking

Advantages: efficient, reliable, good value

...The direct banking arm of The Royal Bank of Scotland is superb. I have been using the telephone banking for over two years and have not experienced a single fault. Each instruction is executed at the time I have specified, and small touches like a freephone balance check and mini statement are appreciated. The sharedealing facility is good value also. I have recently started banking by pc, and the number of security features in place are reassuring. The user interface is clear and efficient, and coupled with an online savings account offering 5% interest, I look forward to using direct banking to manage my account more effectively....

Royal Bank of Scotland... and small print.

Advantages: Local branches in most towns
Disadvantages: poorly trained staff and ridiculous service charges

...dispatched, I assumed money had been deducted from my account, but like a lot of people I put too much stock in the ?balance? function in the cash-line, 4 days later I noticed this and dumped money in to cover it. For these 4 days of £14 the RBS have charged me £56. It occurs to me that If I had to charge my clients these kinds of penalties I would be called a con-artist, a fraudster, yet the RBS do this every day and get away with it. I asked why the money had been taken out, as I consider this as an unsolicited loan in fact an illegal loan at a time where the government and the banks are supposedly trying to get people out of dept. I was informed the only other option was to refuse the transfer and charge me £35. for nothing. This I believe reflects the attitude of the Royal, how a very small initial miscalculation can spiral...

Advantages: hah! what?
Disadvantages: they overcharge their customers because, well, they can!

...because in the two years I have been with RBOS they have never told me what I can buy. No catalogue, and even the customer services reps could not tell me what was on offer. This service also seems to change at their whim, without informing their customers. I wanted to use the HMV direct service that they offer, and phoned up - only to find out it had changed to Virgin months before! I have personally never been more disgusted with a bank. I have also been a customer of HSBC for the last 10 years. They would not dream of charging me for going overdrawn by 26 pence - which I have done on several occasions. If you are thimking of opening an account with RBOS, please dont....
