Rupert Everett in his words.
Advantages: His infectious style
Disadvantages: Does not reveal all about his private life.
...I had always been a fan of Rupert Everett and relished the thought of reading his autobiography and whilst on a retreat in Italy last summer I found this book on the communal bookshelf and immediately pounced!
This is a very open sincere account of the classic tale of the struggling actor who has two big breaks very early in his career and then flounders and then finds his feet later careerwise but doesn't he have a lot of fun along the way! Now openly gay he reveals more sordid times in Paris, his very straightlaced upbringing, his love for Julie Andrews, his affair with Beatrice Dalle, friendship with Paula Yates and his professional relationships with Sharon Stone, Madonna and Julia Roberts.
Celebrity titbits, moments of real poignancy, his troubador lifestyle and his total honesty about himself make this a thoroughly enjoyable...

My Struggle
Advantages: Quite interesting
Disadvantages: Only quite interesting
...PRICE & PUBLISHER:
This hardback is currently for sale for £11.39 new on Amazon, and was published by Little Brown, Sept 2006. 416 pp. It's heavy and gave me wrist ache (ooer missus) so I recommend waiting for the paperback.
A GOOD READ?
I used to dismiss Everett as yet another floppy-haired posh-boy who can't act, but is very beautiful and excellent at playing upper class roles (ie themselves, usually). This book changed my opinion only in that he is posher than I suspected, although not an aristocrat, and a good writer most of the time. I have not read any of his novels.
Everett was born in Norfolk in 1959, son of a Major. After a spell in Hook, Hants, the family moved on to Braintree in Essex and were part of the hunting fraternity. Impressed at an early age by the film "Mary Poppins" he identifies with a couple...

FREE DVDs
Advantages: Free trial, large choice, post included, new realeases
Disadvantages: see review
...I like movies and I like freebies, so when you get offered both in one swoop you?re bound to accept! I used my two week free trial with this company and remained with them for a couple of monthsbefore moving on to try many other companies free trials (and winning a new DVD player on Tesco DVD rental site on their free trial offer). I then had an email from DVDs 365 asking me to go back, and offering me a free DVD if I did so. I had just left Tesco (with my new DVD player) so I chose to go back with them.
∆◊◊ THE SERVICE THEY OFFER ∆◊◊
Basically it?s like going to a video shop and hiring films on DVD, except you don?t pay for each film you chose ? rather a monthly fee for which you can watch as many movies as you can fit in, for us this is usually around 8 a month (2 a week usually weekends...

Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54
Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.
...At first I wasn't convinced by up-scaling DVD player technology but was persuaded after reading an article in "What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision" magazine. Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied.
On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. All the components such as cables, remote and manuals were well presented in their own protective plastic bags, to keep them protected. The player...

Rupert the Rabbit
Advantages: CHILDRENS ENTERTAINMENT
Disadvantages: NA
...?I have called my new Rabbit Rusty,? said Rupert.
?My golly,? said Rebecca, ?oh well; if you must.?
?My rabbit is rather boring; it just sits their sniffing and chewing lettuce all Day long.? Rupert chuckled.
?That?s funny replied Rebecca, I have a boyfriend and he too chews all day long and he just sits there sniffing; He?s boring too.?
?Well, what name did they give him?? Rupert Asked.
?Well bizarrely enough he?s called Rusty.?
Rupert laughed, ?Well they are two of the kind then aren?t they??
?I shall invite him for tea said Rebecca.?
?Good idea!? replied Rupert; ?he will be able to see my rabbit.?
Rebecca tried to explain to Rupert, her boyfriend had been attacked by a
Rottweiller dog and it had made him a little nervous of animals.
?It?s not exactly a Rottweiller though is it??
?Really was he...

Not my favourite!
Advantages: Share buying with advice.
Disadvantages: My experiences have been very unfortunate!
...I have been with Everett Financial Management for some years. They ring me up with share tips, and try to persuade me to buy. The tips I have bought in the past include Energy Technique (at 55p, now standing at under 6p), Tamaris (at 70p, now being liquidated), Silver Shield (at 40p, now Ninth Floor at 22p), and most recently Northern Petroleum at 5 3/4p,( now at 2 1/4p).
With this latest purchase, almost immediately after buying them, the share price plummetted. After around 3 months, I still had not received the share certificate, so I contacted them. I was told that Everetts had not yet received the shares from Northern Petroleum and that it might be some time before they were received.
I wrote to Everetts advising that as they still did not have the shares to issue a certificate to me, I required the contract to be cancelled...

Rupert Bear
Advantages: Over eighty years of magic
Disadvantages: None
...I was walking out of our local Oxfam shop feeling that triumph which comes when you find a book you?ve really wanted for ages, at a price you can easily afford, when I caught sight of an oldish Rupert annual on a stand by the door. I picked it up. 1971.
Before I opened it, or looked at the price, I was hit suddenly by an intensely Proustian sensation. Oranges and nicotine??. The mingled smell seemed everywhere, but I knew it was only in my imagination. I paid for the annual, 99p, and began to remember.
My grandfather, Clement Wilfred Stockwin, who was very old when I was born, was an uneducated, working class man who was not only highly intelligent but had views which were quite amazing for his age and place in society. One of these was that girls should be as well educated as boys, and he decided to teach me to read as I learned...

Blind Man's Bluff?
Advantages: Well written thriller.
Disadvantages: Main character attracts little sympathy.
...The protagonist of Rupert Thomson's fourth novel is Martin Blom. At the outset, Martin is shot by an unknown assailant in a car park. He survives the assault, but the bullet passed through the back of his skull and as a result he loses his sight.
The novel starts with Martin waking in hospital and being told the bad news. He receives conselling for his condition and training in the use of a white stick. He has visits from various members of his family and the police.
He undergoes an operation, and a plate is put into his head to repair the damage from the injury. He is told that he is a special case, but not why he is special.
Time passes. Martin does not feel sorry for himself, indeed he discovers that he is regaining his sight, contrary to all the findings of his doctors. He decides not to tell anyone that he has regained his...

Red, Green, Yellow, Blue - what colour are you?
Advantages: Great piece of fiction, gets you thinking
Disadvantages: not conventional storytelling (although that's not reall a disadvantage in my book!)
...Being a BIG fan of Rupert Thomson I got very excited last year when I found out that this book was on the way - so excited in fact that I called the publisher and requested an advanced copy on the promise that I would review it in my bookshop as soon as it was published. I have never been so excited about a book as on the way down to the post office that morning, 'sorry we missed you card' in hand, knowing that I was about to collect this book!!! Hurrying back to get to work, I found myself a quiet place on the train and started to read - and instantly got hooked!
THE PLOT
In a Britain dissolving into anarchy, the Government has decided to take a stand. Usual measures of law enforcement and education are clearly not working - something more radical is needed, and something a lot more ruthless. In the middle of the night Britain...
