Navman S30 3D Satnav

Advantages: Good sound quality, Excellent re-route calculation.
Disadvantages: Gets a litte confused in busy cities due to the volume of roads.

Long-term use of Canon S30

Advantages: Manual features, sturdy, excellent pictures
Disadvantages: Umm...too big?

...I thought I'd write a review of this camera from the point of view of a long-term assessment of its performance (rather than most out of the box type things). I have to say that I love my camera, and ever since I bought have not used either of my 35mm cameras. The S30 has a lovely polished look to it and feels sturdy, it has stood up to some fairly rough treatment over the year or so that I have had it (including some small drops at times). I was a little worried that the sliding the lens cover might break (it seemed a little flimsy) or I might damage the lens when in a rush to close it, but neither of these fears have materialised. However I have always felt that the camera's start-up time is a little on the long side - it can take as long as 8-9 secs to get ready to shoot (somewhat longer than taking the lens cap of an SLR...

...Having been stuck with a busted camcorder on the morning on an important family visit, I dashed to a major electrical store to source a replacement, stumbled across this camera, researched the others on display and chose the S26 for ease of use, merit for the make (I bought Lumix TZ5 and have been really pleased with it, quality, capabilities etc, great lens) and general feel for the camera. in my opinion, X70 zoom works very well, resolution excellent for an "older" user and their "junior" assistants. I think that Transfer speed is not rapid, but "so what" in a camera at this price point. Very happy to recommend for general everyday trouble free use. BUT buy it on line for £60 less than the big stores and be even more satisfied that I am Ron...

Fuji FinePix S1500. Descendant of the S1000fd

Advantages: Huge zoom, Focus Tracking, Easy to use
Disadvantages: Bulky, A little slow, AA batteries are a bit inconvenient

...The Fuji FinePix S1500 is the latest incarnation of the very successful FinePix S1000fd. It is very SLR-like in appearance and the added bulk of the battery-holder/grip does give it an assured feeling in your hands. Of course, this can be a disadvantage, and if you want a camera that you can just slip in-and-out of your pocket, then maybe a slimmer compact should be considered. The 12x optical zoom is excellent and it equates to 33-396mm in 35mm terms - and if this isn't enough, there is a 5.7x digital zoom feature too. The menus are friendly and easy to navigate, and there are helpful explanatory prompts that appear on thew LCD screen when the mode-dial setting is changed. There are 14 preset scenes to choose from, each setting the camera to its optimum settings for the given scenario, but on top of this, the camera can be used...

My life with the 'S' type

Disadvantages: Not as quiet as I had expected

...I have owned my 3litre auto 'S' type since June 1999 and have covered over 40,000 miles. The car was supplied with most of the possible accessories (except satellite nav - far too expensive, and CAT suspension). The car was an early production model so (I suspect) suffered from some extra problems. Excessive road noise was cured by the fitting of a 'German Autobahn' sound deadening kit (free of charge) and made quite a difference. Service costs have been kept to the Jaguar guarantee of £150 + vat (every 10,000). Fuel consumption on high speed motorway journeys can top 30mpg, but 26mpg is the average. One amazing feature of the car is Jaguars ability to change the entire software when in for a service. The latest software upgrade (to cure a minor problem with the airconditioning) has had an unbelievable effect on the 0-60mph...

...This is a good quality product that offers good value for money in the very short term. Although as with most electronic products, the value will deteriorate over time and should be able to get a cheaper version next year. It's a great little device with plenty of features that I would highly recommend. This really is a wonderful piece of kit that should go well with many accessories because it really looks good. Olympus E-30. Still not up there with the big boys?

Advantages: Fold out LCD screen, Image Stabilization, Zuiko lens quality, Picture quality, Flash options
Disadvantages: Noise in low light, Too many buttons, Badly laid out, Too many gimmicks

...The E-30 is Olympus's own stepping-stone between the so-called "prosumer" models (what an awful word) and the E-3 professional SLR, being loosely comparable with the likes of the Canon EOS 50D, the Nikon D90 and the Sony Alpha A-350. It shares a lot of the E-3's features and has even overtaken the E-3 in terms of resolution, offering 12mp compared with the E-3's 10. Unfortunately - or fortunately, depending on your opinion - some of its features are things that serious photographers don't really want on their cameras and definitely push the E-30 towards the hobby photographers rather than the professionals. The E-30 doesn't share the E-3's weatherproof casing, in fact it is built from a plastic/fibre-glass composite material, which helps to keep the weight down and, surprisingly to me, doesn't make it feel cheap.
