S55 - a gem of a phone (for small fingers!)

...i'm a bit of a mobile phone buff, i've been known to change my mobile every 6 months to ensure i get the best of my current 'feature of the year' or what have you. so i think i have some merit in giving this opion, and hope its of use to you. i previously had a panasonic gd87 - my first camera phone. i bought that one based on the verdict that it had the best camera/screen combo at the time (see my review on this site). the problem was, that panasonic just didn't have user friendly software. it was impossible to easily manage your phonebook, and it was a real pain texting - you'd end up having to delete an entire word because the t9 didn't work well. so i decided to change, and change i did - to using a brand new siemens s55. i've had this for a good 5 months now (new change impending ;-) and this review is based on that 5 month...

Canon EF-S 18-55mm Zoom Lens

Advantages: Cheap and light
Disadvantages: Grainy photo quality, low zoom

...I recently purchased a sweet Canon 400D/XTi Rebel from Amazon.co.uk (£45 cashback!) and this standard zoom lens (Canon EF-S 18-55mm) came with it. As far as I know, you cannot purchase the Canon EF-S 18-5mm on it's own, as it's designed specifically to be sold with the 400D/XTi Rebel package. I'm sure you can pick up a cheap one on eBay though (probably removed from a kit package, or being sold due to an upgrade from kit package). I've seen the EF-S 18-55mm sell for around £25-£35 at undamaged/rarely used condition on eBay, which is quite cheap! I obviously chose the kit lens package with my 400D/XTi Rebel as it only adds about £40 in the price difference, and I couldn't afford a new lens at that time. Before I start reviewing the actual lens, I'd like to say that is is a kit lens. It doesn't have a great built quality...

Snap Happy Samsung!

Advantages: Great camera at a great price.
Disadvantages: None at the price, you get a great item for what you pay!

...I bought this camera in ASDA at the incredible price of £75 in a gorgeous chrome silver colour (pictured). It is very SLR-like in appearance and the added bulk of the battery-holder/grip does give it an assured feeling in your hands. Of course, this can be a disadvantage, and if you want a camera that you can just slip in-and-out of your pocket, then maybe a slimmer compact should be considered. The 12x optical zoom is excellent and it equates to 33-396mm in 35mm terms - and if this isn't enough, there is a 5.7x digital zoom feature too. However, if you are in the market for a good DVD player that is packed with features, the JVC XV-N55SL would be worthy of consideration. We have had ours a couple of years now, but last year it got relegated to the dining room when we purchased our DVD recorder. Advantages: Excellent connection to Chester and North Wales, reasonably priced, very family friendly
