Advantages: Small, compact and very easy to use! Disadvantages: Old, not as good as more recent cameras.
...Nikon Coolpix S1.
I bought this camera from Curries via their website for £169 back in 2006, so it is relatively old now, and in terms of the advance in cameras, is almost an antique! You can now pick one up for a lot cheaper, around £65, but I think they're being slowly phased out, so if you want one, get it quick.
When I first bought it, 5.1 Megapixels was considered relatively high, whereas now, anything towards 9.1 or 10.1 megapixels is becoming the new bench level. However, unless you are a really keen photographer, you won't really notice too much difference.
What attracted me to this camera was it's looks. It is a lovely little camera, and in black it looks stylish and sleek, whilst also being very compact; there's no extruding lens or other parts sticking out, so the camera is very flat which is extremely helpful as it can...

Review of Nikon Coolpix S1
Advantages: from Studio direkt to CMYK, superior image quality Disadvantages: thetered camera, needs continuous light
...This is Leica´s very first selfmade digital camera. With the LEICA S1 Pro, Leica Camera, Solms, has managed to further increase the imaging quality and productivity of the digital studio camera. This increase in performance is achieved with a remarkable sensor which results in a maximum data quality at a high signal to noise ratio. This has a4-fold increase in light sensitivity, meaning that even critical photographic situations at low levels of illumination can be handled more effectively.
The photographer can use the modeling light of his or her existing studio flash equipment for taking the shots, for instance.
The new sensor - including Binning and Anti-flicker - provides a 14 Bit signal for red, green and blue colours which is processed in a 16 bit data path. This results in clean colours without noise
or blooming.

Review of Leica S1 Pro
...?purist? view!
I considered buying a digital SLR but was put off by the price etc.
I had been looking at large zooms for a while but I didn?t like the look of any and I had only just bought my A70. I then saw the Canon Powershot S1 IS in a magazine; it had 10x optical zoom, image stabilisation and 30fps video mode. It was all too tempting and soon got the better of my wallet!! I found it on the web for a reasonable price so it had to be done.
When I received it I liked the look of it and although feeling awkward initially it began to fall into place soon enough.
The zoom is fantastic as it can get you right into the action or the scene and with image stabilisation (IS) you don?t have to worry about keeping totally still as this takes care of it for you. The first time you turn on IS it feels a bit strange looking through...
Advantages: good design, large lcd, photo quality, sd card, simple to use Disadvantages: no viewfinder, poor abilities in low light
...I've had this camera or around three years and use it when I don't have or need my dslr.
As a compact digital camera it's getting on in years now and has been surpassed by newer models, that said it's still a worthwhile purchase.
Positives:
At 5.1 megapixels it's more than enough for the purposes of most compact camera users (despite what most camera manufacturers would try to make you believe - more megapixels is not necessarily better).
The camera is capable of filming at a reasonable quality (there is a switch on the back which you slide across to get the recording mode) and the camera can also record sound which is an advantage
The LCD screen on the back of the camera is large (2.5") in comparison to the cameras overall size which is handy when it comes to taking the photo as there is no view finder. It is of course also handy...

We had been looking for a lightweight laptop for a while, and after good advice decided to go for one of the Sony Vaio S series. After much deliberation I decided on the S1XP - the top model of the series (there are three models - S1XP, S1VP (availble only from Sony) and the S1HP (base model).
The main reason for the purchase was to have soemthing lightweight but functional for travel. A lot of laptops seem to come...

Review of Sony Vaio VGN S1XP
Advantages: Cheap, simple to use, stylish Disadvantages: Lack of resolution options
...As a school ICT teacher monitors are obviously important to me. We have kitted out our classrooms with the 1730s for a variety of reasons. Firstly they proved to be one of the best value models that our supplier could provide us with. I can't say exactly how much they cost us per unit but suffice to say it was cheap.
When our inspection unit arrived we were delighted to find it had a hardened screen covering which means that we have had no failures due to over enthusiastic hands. The range of options are fairtly limited but the auto settings and auto adjust cope with most things we throe at it from a school point of view.
The viewing real estate is good with a reasonably small bezel all around and built in speakers at the bottom of the unit.
Style wise the silver effect fits in with most modern equipment and the large base...

Review of Belinea 1730 S1
...A new site for job seekers looking for jobs in Scotland or for those of you just seeking a change in career (which is pretty much 90% of us).

Allows you to search the database of all jobs in different categories using industry sector, salary range, and location. Very easy to use and quick to downlaod info.
(2) myS1
This allows the user to store all the information they need from the site e.g. job searches, CV information, favourite articles etc.
(3) Companies
This gives a small feature on a number of recruitment agencies who advertise on the site.

Review of s1jobs.com
Advantages: Easy to navigate, good postings Disadvantages: Slow to load (but hopefully will improve in time)
...region! This tool allows the user to choose across the Central Belt (Glasgow, Edinburgh), North East (Aberdeen, Dundee), Highlands and Islands (Inverness), Borders and South. This permits a more flexible search, which is beneficial for those interested in working in a specific area.
There is also a keyword section where the user can input words which are related to a job (c++, video, laser, etc) which will then narrow the search, should this be a requirement.
The above are those available from the "Quick Search". A more advanced search is available to allow the user to specify salary range, hours per week, etc. I would advise a quick search first to check the variety of work offered before using this tool.
Another nice facility of this site is to register with s1jobs.com who will then forward new postings to your email address...

Review of s1jobs.com
Advantages: Stylish, high zoom, quality images, easy to use, lightweight, etc Disadvantages: Difficult to manually focus on a subject, not sure if it is entirely waterproof
...Canon's PowerShot S1IS has been a revolutionary breakthrough in camera designs. A stylish, lightweight silver camera, comfortable to handle and easy to use; perfect for the beginner or amateur (professionals may also consider using it sometimes, depending on the type of shot wanted).
With an astonishing 10× optical zoom, there can be no doubt in saying that it is one of the most powerful cameras on the market, in comparison with other similar cameras. Optical zoom is the real, true zoom that manages to produce good quality images by repositioning the lenses. The maximum digital zoom of 3.2 can be combined with the optical zoom to produce a maximum zoom of 32×. However, the more digitally zoomed, the courser the image is, resulting in a lower quality image. This is because digital zoom is a way of magnifying an image using...
Advantages: Compact, weaterproof body, full multimode operation, as easy or as difficult to use as you want, capable of superb results, pinnacle of APS technology Disadvantages: Small range of lenses, plastic lens mount, its APS so has it's own quirks.
...I remember the Minolta Vectics S1 being launched back in about 1996-when APS was being hailed as the "replacement for 35mm". Total claptrap of course and I told the Fuji rep that to his face and almost ten years later I've been proved right...
Anyway back to the camera.
When new the Vectics S1 used to be on sale for £400 c/w 22-56 zoom lens, but I purchase mine c/w a 25-150mm zoom lens from Cash Converters (again!) for the grand total of £50-bargain again eh?
The first thing I noticed is that the Vectics S1 is an extremely compact SLR camera which is down having a side mounted pentaprism-thats the device which allows you to see through the lens of the camera before taking the pic-hence the term SLR or Single Lens Reflex. However, despite being made almost entirly of plastic it does handle very well and inspires confidence...
