St George The Patron Saint of Sainsburys

Advantages: It's by possibly the best overall brewery around, it's relatively cheap
Disadvantages: It's a mix of better Youngs beers, and the sum of the parts don;t make the whole, it's also exclusive to Sainsbury's, which means a 14 mile drive for me!

...St George ? patron saint of England. Symbol of English spirit, bravery in the face of adversity, stiff upper lip. What better personification of this great land to choose for a thoroughly English ale? And so we have Young?s St George?s. Never heard of it? No, well neither have I! Having seen this ale mentioned in the hallowed lists of ciao, I felt pangs of guilt that I hadn?t even heard of this ale. Even worse was that it was brewed by the fair hands of Young?s, whose Double Chocolate Stout, London Ale, Waggle Dance and Old Nick all feature regularly in my beer cupboard restocking (yes, I do have a cupboard just for beer!) The shame of it. Would people point and whisper behind my back if they knew I hadn?t heard of this ale? Would ciao members in their hundreds turn their backs on my ops, even those loyal few who know of my addictions...

Halls Soothers

Advantages: Taste nice, soothe a throat

...It's that time of year again, winter!! and to start it off I have a cold so this morning at the station I bought my favourite pack of cough sweet, Halls Soothers. Each packet was £0.65 but this was a station and I know you can get them cheaper in places like Boots etc. Halls are quite an impressive company. According to their website they account for more than 50% of international cough drop sales and their Halls Soothers range is the UK's number 1 medicated confectionery product. Halls was actually started by two brothers, The Hall Brothers in 1893 and originally they produced soap and jams. They then moved into confectionery and in the 1930's invented the popular mentho-lyptus which is the basis of most of their cough drops now. ...Risley Hall Hotel We won a 2 day spa break away for two last March at Crufts dog show to this hotel, we had never been before so didn't know what to expect it was only 30miles away from where we lived so great for getting there. So last week we booked our break away from the voucher that we were given in our prize package. About Risley Hall Hotel This hotel is part of the Oxford Hotels & Inns chain, Risley Hall is in their Oxford collection which is a group of 25 hotels. Risley Hall is surrounded by 17 acres of land it's an 11th century Saxon country house with 35 bedrooms 16 in the Manor House all unique and another 19 spacious bedrooms in the courtyard which is called the Willoughby Court. Music Hall Days

...of Gus Elen, Arthur Askey, Marie Lloyd, Dan Leno, Gracie Fields, Charles Colbourne (his performance of Two Lovely Black Eyes, probably the only political music hall comedy song ever!) is a real joy to watch and hear, even though when it was recorded when he was already a very old man. George Laybourne was famous for the song Champagne Charlie. Incidentally, there is footage of Tommy Trinder portraying Laybourne singing this song in a role in a film. There is also film of other stars, and audio recordings of others, such as Albert Chevalier, famed for his moving song, My Old Dutch. It has no extras, runs for 75 minutes and even if you do not have an interest in music hall, I think you will like this DVD. It is listed on Ciao as being available at £8.99. It will make an ideal present for someone you love or for yourself....

...?George?s Marvellous Medicine? was the first of Roald Dahl?s stories which we read to our eldest son. It?s the story of a little boy who has a real stinker of a grandmother. She?s rude and scary and bosses him around all the time. One day George?s mum and dad have both gone out, leaving him alone with his Grandma. George has had enough of Grandma bullying him and so decides to cure her of her cantankerous behaviour with a special potion, which he?ll give her instead of her usual medicine. He finds an enormous saucepan in the kitchen and lugs it all around the house, essentially putting in a bit of everything he finds [lipsticks and canary seed included!]. He even makes sure he adds some brown paint so that it is the same colour as Grandma?s real medicine! He then boils it up to make sure that everything?s nicely mixed together before...
