The University of Salford Main Campus

Advantages: Within its own grounds, wide range of courses, good student comaradery
Disadvantages: located in Salford, it rains far too much!

...I came to University in 2004 and was extremely impressed with what they had to offer but not only that, the people i met here were outstanding. Salford University is situated approximatly 0.5 miles from Manchester City Centre and is actually closer to the centre than any of the othe Greater Manchester Universities. Part of the Main campus is on a major road into the city and is therefore easily served by buses. The main campus also boasts its own train station(salford crescent). If you are coming to the university by car then get onto the M62 and then the M602 and follow the signs for Salford and then Salford Univeristy. The University is relativley large and it main campus is situated within its own grounds which are lush and green littered with squirrels and other cute and furry animals! The Univeristy has other campus' close by...

The Voice of Salford

...Ordsall Hall Museum is the last place you would expect in the middle of a pretty grim part of Salford. Graffiti and high rise flats yes, an industrial estate yes but a Tudor black and white timbered manor house no. Ordsall Hall Museum is a complete wee gem. I did my work placement for university there so I will try to be as unbiased as possible with this review the history a manor at ordsall in Salford has been in existence since the doomsday book. The oldest parts of the existing house date from the fourteenth century. ...Holiday Inn Express Salford Quays is situated in a very nice location on the waterfront, my room looked out over the renovated canals and docklands which was good. We were greeted by a very friendly receptionist who was very helpful in giving us local information and directions. All the staff were helpful and friendly ( even when we managed to lock ourselves out of our room!) The room was modern and very clean with plenty of coffee, cups , towels etc Breakfast was as good - plenty of seating, nice dining room, and good length of hours on the Sunday morning in which to get it. Location-wise, it's about 14 minutes on the Metrolink tram from Manchester Piccadilly station on the Eccles line, and from there about a 4-minute walk. ...Salford University wasn't my first choice of Uni. Having lived near manchester anyway, I was looking for somewhere else, to be honest. But, I am glad that I stayed! I did the BSc in Information techonology, and to be honest, I couldn't have picked a better degree. Rather than go down the software engineering / computer science route, I opted for a degree that was more inclined to theory and management studies. I think this certainly set me up well for my future career. There was a lot of people management skills as well involved, and where fellow graduates fear giving presentations where I work, I have no problem in getting and and speaking to however many people I need to! ...I graduated from salford University in 1996 after completing a four year course in Modern Languages (French and Spanish). I chose salford University as the course was a very modern course - unlike the tradtional courses of places such as Oxbridge where literature is the main basis of many parts of the course. During my time at Salford, I learned much about translation and interpretation and also spent a year abroad. The first six months I spent in Granada, Spain, as an au pair and then the University found me a job as a secretary in France for my second stint. I would truly recommend Salford if you want to go somewhere with a modern and practical outlook to courses....

Nice local museum and gallery

Advantages: free, free parking, locally orientated

...The Art Gallery is joined with Salford Museum at Peel Park on the Crescent in Salford and has changing exhibitions and hands-on activities as well as all the usual museum and gallery stuff. Salford Museum and Gallery is one of those places that you always get taken to at primary school and I first visited when I was about eight or nine with my school. The main reason they always take you there is probably because of the locality but another reason must be the old Victorian Street that they have. My mum went there when she was at school and thats what she remembered about it. Lark Hill Place is in the basement of the gallery and is built up of bits of buildings taken from all round Salford. Union? What Union?

Advantages: Close to Man Met Union
Disadvantages: Expensive, poor beer which takes an age to get to you.

...By the way the ratings are on the uni as a whole which I thoroughly enjoy. Don't want to tread on any toes but....what is up with Salford Uni Union? Does it do anything? Having experienced the wonder of The Pav a few times over the two years I have been there, I can hardly say that I am impressed. Uni Union's are generally amongst THE places to be as a student - it was certainly the case in other Uni's I have been to, and you only have top look at Man Met to see how to do it properly. In my experience the Pav/Sub Club and whatever else have failed to provide any incentive for me to frequent them - though not living in Castle Irwell doesn't help. I am aware that the location doesn't help, but the bars are generally understaffed and the prices are uncompetitive - again look at Man Met and learn....please....

Free CIM Postgraduate Diploma Course

Advantages: Totally free opportunity to get a professional qualification
Disadvantages: Bit of extra work on top of your degree

...I graduated last July from Salford University with a BSc (Hons) Business Studies and Marketing Management degree. Through a bit of investigating I found out that it was possible to study for the CIM Postgraduate Diploma while I was in my final year. This was something I'd wanted to do for a while but had always wondered how on earth I was going to afford the £2-3000 fees if I couldn't persuade an employer to pay for the training. However - it is possible to take the course FOR FREE while you study at Salford University. There's some kind of loop hole that lets you take the course totally free of charge because you are already registered as a student there. On the down side because you're getting a freebie you don't get the course books provided for you but they are all in the library so you won't have to fork out. Because...

Disadvantages: may not be enough shops for avid shoppers

...The Designer Outlet is situated in the heart of Salford's rejuvinated Quays next to the Lowry Centre and Imperial War Museum North amid some of the best waterfromt views in Greater Manchester. The Outlet is the city's only designer outlet and has over 80 stores that constantly offer goods at up to 70% less than the high street prices.
