São Salvador da Baía de Todos os Santos
Advantages: Nicely restored tourist friendly old town
Disadvantages: The ladies hunt in packs
...Salvador, in the state of Bahia, north east Brazil (or São Salvador da Baía de Todos os Santos as it was named in the past) was the first colonial capital city of Brazil and, although power shifted to Rio de Janeiro in the late eighteenth century, then to Brasilia in 1960, it retains much of it's past grandeur and colonial architecture. One of the main reasons to come here, however, is the wonderful mix of cultural influences that make the cuisine, music and lifestyle here so different even to other parts of Brazil. The population of over three million, consists mainly of people with African origins descended from slaves, although there have been many other strong influences through Salvador's history. Salvador is also famous for it's carnival and street parties.
The final stop on my extensive two-week tour of Brazil was to Salvador...

Hola Brazil, Bye Bye Wallet
Advantages: Fasinating experience
Disadvantages: Not for the Niave
...a mixture of cash and travellers\' cheques (preferably US Dollars or Euros).
Getting around
Some forms of transport in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Recife or Salvador, can be unsafe.
By Road
There have been instances where gangs have set buses alight leaving passengers inside after robbing them.
In Rio de Janeiro in 2006 there were two incidents of hijacking and robbing of tour buses transferring British tourists from the international airport to their hotel. Policing of tourist areas and the express way from the international airport to the downtown area has been increased since 2006. Bus travel between major cities and travel within other cities is relatively safe.
On arrival in Brazil I would advice only using registered airport taxis. You can pick up taxis from the many recognised taxi ranks around Brazilian cities. If...

Backpacking in Brazil
Advantages: breathtaking scenery, beautiful people, lots of fun....
Disadvantages: long, long bus journeys, quite expensive for a backpacker
...We spent six weeks travelling around Brazil which was not nearly long enough, six months would have been more like it!
We travelled there from Argentina and our first stop was the world famous Iguazu Falls which were an amazing sight, as was the surrounding forest, although the Argentinian side of the falls has more wildlife and more places to explore. From here we travelled overnight to Sao Paulo by bus and arrived at 3am. We were quite apprehensive about going to Brazil from all we'd read and heard about crime, muggings and so on and being in such a huge city was quite daunting, especailly as our Portuguese was pretty appalling at that stage. However, we found people in the bus station were extremely friendly and helpful and were able to direct us to Chinatown via the subway system which was where we had chosen to stay, as it had...

Brazil Suspicion Breeds Confidence
Advantages: Bizarre, dark, witty, crafted.
Disadvantages: Confusing, twisted, hang on these are advantages too!
...Brazil stands out from the usual crowd of self serving mass produced heartless Hollywood falderal and manages to provoke , entertain, move, amuse , astonish , delight and confuse all in the first five minutes, and then it proceeds to get better and better. You can probably tell already, I quite like this film, this is going to be a five star review and is going to contain a fair few superlatives, but the film really does deserve mine and your enthusiasm. It is a rare gem of celluloid fancy and this is why you need to watch it.
Its directed by the American ex-Monty Python member and one time animator of giant hedgehogs, Terry Gilliam, and anyone familiar with his other work (Jabberwocky, Twelve Monkeys, The Fisher King, Time Bandits, Baron Munchausen etc.) will recognise his perculiar flare for the visual and his dark humour, but as...

Paradise beach resort in Brazil
Advantages: Beautiful, charming, sophisticated beach resort
Disadvantages: Other than getting there - none really.
...You may notice from my 'ciao' name that I have some interest in Búzios and this is because it is my second home, or to be more precise, my holiday home as we own a holiday house there and our family visit every year. I therefore feel well qualified to comment on it as a holiday destination and will try not to be too biased.
Búzios (the town's full name is Armação de Búzios) sits on the tip of a long, beach-rich peninsula jutting out into the clear blue Atlantic just 2 hours drive north of Rio de Janeiro.
Until the 1960s Búzios was a small, sleepy fishing village. Then Brigitte Bardot stumbled upon it's sandy beaches in 1964, and in the years since the little town has used the publicity to turn itself into one of Brazil's top beach resorts. On summer holiday weekends the town is packed with Brazilians on vacation, many Carioca...

Brazil nutters
Advantages: Another action-packed race with unpredictable results
Disadvantages: Montoyas untimely demise
...Inspired by a comment I got a while ago about me being on a par with Connoiser Haggler I have produced this from last years fun-filled, action-packed Brazilian GP from the Interlagos track in Sau Paulo in - yes you've guessed it - Brazil. What do you think?
After the glamorous surroundings of Australia and Malaysia, you hit the ground quite hard in Brazil. The South American country is extremely vast but very crowded and underveloped and this shows in the F1 host Sao Paulo. The track of Interlagos is renowned for it’s bumpy surface and it’s harshness on the unfit. 2000 saw the Brazilian body fined for constant problems including an advertising hording falling down, forcing the session to be stopped 3 times. It seems the track has many problems and hasn’t a good reputation. The only way the track is kept...

Brasil - a conflicting recommendation
Advantages: Breathtaking nature, cheap, multi-cultural
Disadvantages: high criminality, bad health institutions (hospital etc.),
...Now I live since nearly two years in Brasil and my opinion about this country is still conflicting: on one side its for sure one of the most impressing countries concerning the nature, on the other side also one of the countries with enormous social differences, and this always means: criminality and violence.
I don?t want to talk here about attractions like Ouro Preto, an Unesco-city, the spectaculous waterfalls of iguacu, the cities Salvador de Bahia and Manaus, about these attractions you find informations in every travel guide, and this is good so, they are worth the visit. And yes, the people in Brasil are really amazingly friendly, the country itself,a quasi-continente, shows so many different sides from the black-african north to the european south like only few others.
As a conclusion I would say: YES, you should visit...

About the width of a 1 pence piece and as long as a 2 pence piece, there oval in shape and are very smooth in appearance, the combination of nut and chocolate works very well, and you get left with a very nice after taste that ull want to savour for ages.

Brazil
Advantages: Everything you dream of
Disadvantages: hard to get to
...I was lucky and arrived just for the carnival where every ones is hyped up and exited, but this is Brazil for you. The weather is hot and every one is in a good mood, you put on your shades and you party day and night.
I loved Brazil; I loved the food, beaches, city and the women. We got meet very nice people there and they were even nice enough to show us places where your average tourist will never find. Beautiful waterfalls, rainforest and exotic fruits were on menu everyday. This is a must for all adventure travellers....

Brazil and World Cup 2006
Advantages: managed to get to the quarter finals
Disadvantages: disappointing performance
...Brazil and Football:
To be Brazilian during any worldwide is a feeling of such an indescribable intensity that it rather difficult to write about it. From a young age, one begins to venerate football. It is not something that is taught, it's deeper. Passion for football rises from within and ascends to become a lifetime affair. Football is so deeply embedded in Brazilian culture that it is only comparable to the religiosity of people. It is, therefore, not astonishing that there is a devotion to the national football as if these were martyrs, giving their all for the glory the country. No, this is not an exaggeration! As extreme as it may seem, it is not uncommon for prayers to be offered in the name of these national heroes, especially prior to matches against historical rival Argentina.
Several sociologists have tried to...
