The Stunning City Of Salzburg
Advantages: beautiful scenery, superb transport system, lots of things to see
Disadvantages: restaurants close quite early, not much veggie food
...My boyfriend Jamie and I have just got back from a 5 day trip to Salzburg in Austria. I bought Jamie the trip to Austria as a present for his last birthday. Here I am reviewing the city of Salzburg.
Getting there
I booked my flights with Ryanair through the website which I found fairly easy to use. Baring in mind I actually booked the tickets in July 2006 so that prices may have changed since then, but I paid £87.02 for both of us for return flight which I thought was very reasonable. We flew from London Stansted and the flight took an hour and forty minutes.
Accommodation
We stayed at Hotel Plainbrucke which is located about 15 minute drive from the airport and a ten minute bus journey from the main town. When I was looking to book a hotel online there were lots to choose from so I can't see anyone having a problem trying...

Salzburg, the sound of Mozart...music
Advantages: Stunning scenery, wonderful place
Disadvantages: not any
...Tourism based on ancient and modern - Mozart's music genius in the 1700s, and the tunes of The Sound of Music, famous now for just over 40 years.
Salzburg has it all, the music story, wonderful, old, historic buildings and the majestic mountains bordering a lovely, open rural plain. 'The Festival City and its beautiful surrounding countryside' - that's what my glossy tourism book says and I agree through and through.
My winter visit was magic. Snow was not as predominant as it usually is in February but enough on the stunning mountains to add the feeling of winter turning to spring. This proved to be just the right time of year for us to explore an old, architectural beauty.
Mozart was born here - to be precise he entered the Salzburg scene at 8 o'clock in the evening on the 27th day of January in 1756 at number 9...

Salzburg Salt Mines
Advantages: Excellent value for money, interesting, good fun
Disadvantages: A little bit out of town
...When my boyfriend and I visited Salzburg in Austria, we decided to take a trip to see the Salt Mines. Getting there was very simple when using the Salzburg card and this also mean that the transport was free too (as the Salzburg Card cover this!).
Arriving At The Salt Mines
Once you arrive at the Salt Mines, which are well signposted, you need to book in at the reception. You pay here and the price was about £3 each which was very reasonable. Once you have paid, you are taken through into a warehouse type building. In here you can leave any valuables such as bags and shopping etc. You are then given some traditional mining clothes to put on. These consisted of a massive pair of baggy white trousers for the girls and dark blue trousers for the boys. You are both then given a blue jumper type thing and a leather pouch which sits...

The Beautiful Salzburg
Advantages: This may make you want to see Salzburg yourself
Disadvantages: I don't think there are any
...I have been to Salzburg 3 times, all in December. The first 2 times I went was with my Secondary School on ski trips in Schladming which is about a 20 minute drive from Salzburg I think. Austria is an excellent place to ski; the views from the mountains are just amazing. I skied down the Planai hundreds of times which are, if I remember correctly the highest or steepest down hill slope in the world (that you can ski down); please correct me if I am wrong. There is a small bar/restaurant at the top which I have eaten and drank in many times before flying down the slopes. The food in Austria is very different but also very tasty and the drinks are very strong, hehehe!!
Each time I have been I have shopped in Salzburg. I don't know what it is like at other times of the year but in December it is very beautiful, especially if it...

Getreidegasse Salzburg - It will attract you too!
Advantages: One of the most beautiful and famous shopping lanes in the country
Disadvantages: Can get extremely busy during the summer; expensive
...Getreidegasse is situated in the "Old Town" of the City of Salzburg and is one of the most beautiful in the country.
The street is very charming and elegant.
It is most famous for its original whrougt signs which date back to the Middle Ages.
Little court yards and side lanes invite you to have a stroll or why not take the time to sit and have a drink in one of those little cafe's.
You will find one expensive boutique next to the other.
Getreidegasse is busiest during the summer months - with the rich guests visiting the famous "Salzburg Festival" during July/August.
It is during this time that you have a good chance of spotting many celebrities who are staying in the city.
Another famous feature of Getreidegasse is "Mozart's Geburtshaus" - Mozart's place of birth which attracts hundreds of visitors every day...

As Close To Nature As You Can Get
Advantages: large natural enclosures, able to get 'up close' to the animals
Disadvantages: all signs are foreign so unable to identify all animals
...Salzburg Zoo
Anifer Landesstrasse 1,
A-5081 Anif
Location
Although called Salzburg Zoo, the zoo is actually situated just outside Salzburg in a place called Hellbrunn
Opening Hours
The zoo is open daily from 8.30am and is either open until 16.30 or 17.30 depending on the time of year you visit - more details can be found on their website www.salzburg-zoo.at. Additionally, in August on Friday and Saturday nights, the zoo is open until 11pm (last admission at 9.30pm)
Price
Entrance to the Zoo will cost adult 8 euros and children (4-16 years) 3.50 euros so I thought the price was fairly reasonable as the zoo is large and will take you a good few hours to walk around, for a family with children, you could make a whole day of it. If you have a Salzburg Card (available everywhere in Salzburg) then entry is free.
Getting...

Visit the lovely town where Mozart was born
Advantages: lovely town, beautiful scenery, a lot of history and culture
Disadvantages: sometimes crowded (mainly in August)
...Salzburg is a lovely town in Austria, with a population of less than 150,000. It is the birthplace of Wolfang Amadeus Mozart. I have been there a number of times and I will certainly go there again.
For many centuries, Salzburg was dominated by the Prince-Archbishops, and you can still see many signs of their power nowadays.
The name Salzburg can be translated as 'Salt Castle' and it refers to the castle which overlooks the whole town (Hohensalzburg) and to the importance of salt mining in the area of Salzburg which has contributed to the richness of the population (in particular of the Archbishops).
The most important and recommendable sights where I have been to are as follows:
THE OLD TOWN
You can see most of Salzburg by just walking around. Situated on both sides of the Salzach river, you can see a lot of lovely...

The Movie Musical begins with stunning views of Salzburg, Austria and a Nun, Maria, singing “The hills are alive with sound of music”. After this we discover that Maria isn’t a very good Nun, and as a result of this she is sent by the Mother Abbess to be a Governess for the von Trapp family.
The von Tapp family consist of Captain von Trapp and his seven children. Maria is to be the twelfth in a long line of governesses- all the others left because the children were so badly behaved. After Maria arrives at the family Mansion she is the victim of a few Pranks, but soon she bonds...

The Hills Are Alive... with the sound of Mozart
Advantages: In the sun, one of the most beautiful cities on earth...
Disadvantages: ... but in the rain it's nowhere near as good...
...Ah, Salzburg. The land of Mozart and the Sound of Music. The hills are alive and all that. One of my favourite cities in the world - when the sun's shining, at least.
I have been to Salzburg many times on day trips while on holiday in Austria, but until recently had not actually stayed there (though it was only for 3 days). Unfortunately the weather for those three days was not kind, but this did give me the impetus to explore more of what the city itself had to offer.
You can't move in Salzburg without being reminded that it's the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - although the city spurned him while he was alive. One place that is definitely worth visiting is the Mozart Residenz (Mozart's Residence), which contains some fascinating information on about his father Leopold (who held the post of Assistant Court Musician...

Fortress With A View Worth Walking To!!
Advantages: Beautiful views, educational, reasonable prices
Disadvantages: not very disabled friendly
...As me and Dayle (my girlfriend)have just returned from our holiday in Salzburg, Austria I thought I would write a review on the Hohansalzburg Fortress we visited while we were there.
Location.
The Hohensalzburg Fortress is situated on Mountain of Hohensalzburg and the fortress looms over the City and you can really see how prominent it is if you sit in the Cathedral Square below and look up at it. It can literally be seen from most parts of the town.
The fortress can be accessed by the cable car system. However, on the day we visited the fortress, the cable car was not in operation. This posed no problems for myself or my girlfriend but I have to admit that it was a fair trek up some steep hills and stairs to reach the entrance of the fortress. I am not sure if the cable car works on a seasonal basis (season being May...
