Advantages: Very well written story Disadvantages: Not for the squeamish
...The popularity of films like ''Green Street'' and ''Football Factory'', which depict football violence seem to have increased over recent years whilst the violence itself has been decreasing. This, combined with an increase in the number of ''true life stories'' type books means that those people who took part in this kind of behaviour can now talk about it more freely and to a wider audience. Although marketed as fiction, Kevin Sampson's ''Awaydays'' is one of the latest to fall into this category.
Paul Carty is from a fairly decent area of Birkenhead and shouldn't really be interested in going to football matches purely for the violence. But since his mother's death, he finds it easier to lose himself in a world of casual violence and equally casual sex than to face the home life he would have without her. He inhabits an area between...
Advantages: Great story, interesting look at modern China Disadvantages: Didn't like the writing style at first
...read. In this case, although Catherine Sampson apparently lives in Beijing, she is clearly not Chinese, yet it didn't matter. I really liked the main character, Song. Like most fictional detectives, he is not a straightforward character, having a complicated background - complete with an ex-wife, a child he doesn't really get on with and a complex job history. Yet, there is no attempt to make the reader feel sorry for him and somehow he seemed really fresh and different - possibly because his native background is so different from the Poirots and Dagleishs Western readers are used to. Whatever the reason, I was intrigued enough by the man to want to read more books in the series.
I also liked Song's sidekicks; Wolf, so-called because of his silver hair, and Blue, a female computer geek who is able to use technology to find out...
...is an explosive plot that sees Cross and his best friend John Sampson on the trail of the killer of three army wives who have been brutally murdered during a ?girls night out?. A soldier friend of Sampson?s stands accused of the murders, and is awaiting execution after being convicted through solid DNA evidence. He is adamant that he is not guilty, Cross and Sampson believe him, and start the race to uncover the real killer.
The story takes twists, turns and writhes through the history of the Vietnamese war, and the involvement of the USA Army. Cross and Sampson come upon a wall of silence and it would appear that the Army has something to hide.
Patterson takes no prisoners as he graphically describes atrocities of war, depicts gruesome, horrific scenes of violence and corpses pile up at a rate of knots in this gripping tale...
Advantages: Scary and good story Disadvantages: Not as good as the first film
...of the psychic Tangina (Zelda Rubinstein) and a native American, Taylor (Will Sampson).
This is a decent continuation of the Poltergeist story, with a good story. The character of Kane is very creepy and well played by Julian Beck. Heather O'Rourke is good again as the scared little girl who the forces of evil wish to abduct. I was impressed by the special effects which help make for a scary film. I still don?t like the character Tangina, who reprises her role from the first film....
Advantages: Freeman & Judd are excellent Disadvantages: The book is much better, The film missed bits out.
...who were immune to his charms. Its obvious from the way the women repulse the masked Casanova that he has abused them mentally and physically but the film is nicely panned out so that we don's have to see any unnecessary violence like some of the more recent torture porn films.
Freeman in my opinion played the part effortlessly but I expected nothing less from a favourite actor of mine. He is very laid back with the role which very much reminded me of the later role he played in Se7en.
Ashley Judd was also very well cast and for made a good partner in crime for Freeman. I have seen Judd in quite a few films and I can say that I have always enjoyed the range of characters she has played.
A strong cast of detectives supported Freeman including best friend Sampson (Bill Nunn) and Carolina police force Nick Ruskin (Cary Elwes) and Davey...
Advantages: A good thriller with plenty of twists and turns Disadvantages: None
....
With his ability to get inside the minds of the most deranged killers, he certainly has the skills and the guts to try and solve the case - but will he discover the truth before 'Jack and Jill' set their sights on Washington's ultimate high profile target?
Also is Alex himself safe? Could he also be on the killer's hitlist?
I will begin by saying I found this an easy book to read. I like nothing more than a good thriller which draws you in from the beginning and does not let go until the end.
I also like a book with a few twists and turns, which keeps you guessing until the end, and I was pleased to find that this book delivers all that.
The book is fast-paced, and written from the alternating perspectives of Cross and other characters, such as his friend and partner Detective John Sampson, and also the killers'.
I enjoyed the writing style...
Advantages: Great writing Disadvantages: Ended to quickly
...Double Cross is part of the Alex Cross series of books by James Patterson which started off several years ago with Cat and Mouse.
Synopsis
Alex has given up consulting for the FBI, and moved back into private practise. He hasn?t cut all ties with the police though, because he?s still dating Bree (Brianna Stone) who?s a senior homicide detective, and of course his best friend is John Sampson, also a detective.
Whilst on a weekend camp with Bree, she receives a call to attend a murder scene. Rather than mess around swapping cars Alex travels to the scene with all intentions of waiting in the car, but curiosity gets the better of him, and he goes up to the scene. He soon finds himself being drawn into the investigation despite his reservations.
Unbeknownst to Alex, at the same time Kyle Craig, who was Alex?s nemesis for so...
Advantages: Amazing songs, great packaging Disadvantages: NONE
..., Addis Ababa, The President, Beardsman Ska, Sampson, Freedom Sounds, Look Away Ska, El Bang Bang, Scamnelena and Cosmic, are some of the classiest, top drawer tunes you will find, with driving, pulsating rhythms and beautiful melodies, matched only by Prince Buster's All Stars (who were basically The Skatalites under a different name anyway!). These guys were the business.
The vocal tracks are even better though - "Marching On" by The Maytals and "I Want Justice" by Delroy Wilson are storming up-tempo belters, "I'm Gonna Take Over Now" by The Ethiopians is my favourite and a lovely downtempo melodic number, plus there's the weird-but-amazing "I'm the Song My Enemies Sing" by Joe Higgs. Tagged onto the end is "Your Wondering Now" as famously covered by The Specials on their debut LP (and more recently Amy Winehouse), which is simply...
Advantages: Strong versions of earlier songs Disadvantages: Still building
...An iron maiden was a medieval instrument of torture, a metal, coffin like device with strategically placed spikes in its lid, which was then closed on its victim; it was bass player Steve Harris? dream that the band of the same name which he founded in June 1976 would create music with similarly penetrating properties. Alongside him in the original line up were singer Paul Di?anno, guitarist Dave Murray and drummer Doug Sampson, but by the time they came to record their self titled debut album in 1980, Sampson had been replaced by ex Samson drummer Clive Burr and guitarist Dennis Stratton had also been recruited.
The album was produced by Will Malone and included new versions of Strange World, Prowler and Iron Maiden (all originally released earlier as part of an EP). The productionleft much to be desired, however, having a very...
Advantages: You won't be able to put it down Disadvantages: You have to wait for the next book!
...Yet another wicked book by JP.
This is another Alex Cross book, for those who totally adore him, you will love this one as much as all the others.
Alex is getting ready to resign from the Washington Police Force. He, surprisingly, feels quite relieved, least of all because Kyle Craig is now in prison. Finally, Alex has also met a woman, Jamilla Hughes. With his family, he is starting to look at his future in a different light.
Then John Sampson turns up at the house, in desperate need of Alex's help. Three young military wives have been terribly killed on a girls night out and Sampson's friend, at the military base, is being accused, his knife was the murder weapon, his fingerprints were on the blade and DNA at the crime scene has been matched to his hair and skin. Despite all the incriminating evidence, Alex believes that this...
