...This camera is easy to use and fits quite nicely into your handbag for a night out. It comes with a very thick instruction booklet which at times is a bit confusing, but it does cover all aspects of the camera. The camera has a 2.5 inch liquid crystal display screen (lcd) to enable you to watch whilst you film or for playback. Depending on whether you film indoors or outdoors you can alter the brightness for the lcd. The camera has a lens cap which must be removsd before filming!!! (Which you can forget to remove and wonder what is up with the camera!!!) It does have a built in microphone to record sound as well as vision. The quality of film is excellent and can be played back through the tv or computer with the correct leads without transferring onto a dvd. The camera is a minidv. You can also take still photos...

Advantages: Price, "Easy Q" Feature, Advanced Technology, Viewfinder Focus

Samsung an average camcorder

Advantages: Compact, convienient and fantastic picture quality
Disadvantages: Unreliable and poor customer service.

...Well it looks very nice and as with all Samsung products it seems to list a heap of fancy features that are on the leading edge of technology. Reliability: I have had this camcorder for almost 6 months and am sorry to say that it has just been sent for repair for the second time due to a manufacturing fault (The LCD screen died). So I am going to say not very reliable at all but this is to be expected with leading edge technology I guess. Ease of use: At first not very. I am quite good generally with electronics but found this confusing and had to sit and read through the manual before I could use this. Sound Quality: 7/10 not fantastic but acceptable if you are a reasonable distance from the camera. Features: Many fancy ones - most of which I probably wont use and missing some of the basic ones that I would look for in a camcorder...

Samsung VP D381 - Simple On The Surface

Advantages: Good for everyday use, simple & small.
Disadvantages: Tapes only, needs firewire.

SAMSUNG CAMCORDER RUBBISH DO NOT BUY VP-DC161

Disadvantages: Spent £350 for only 1 hour of footage

...Completely useless and Samsung far less than helpful when things Go wrong as were PC world not interested in either replacing or repairing mine even though I was told it had a two year guaruntee! The camera lasted for one and a half hours of recording and now does not work at all. Could not even finalise the disc that was in it when it packed up lost valuable footage of baby daughter. Bought another off e-bay if only to finalise the disc but it had the same fault only backlight came on and Nothing else at all! DO NOT BUY SAMSUNG VP-DC161 I have wasted over £350 to date and have now decided to write to the BBC Watchdog program as feel sure hundreds of people have bought this duff product from Samsung and it is high time they owned up to making a dud and provided replacement of refund....

VP-D351 cheap, but insubstantial

...The VP-D351 is a basic no-frills camcorder of lightweight construction, read 'plasticy' In it's favour it uses inexpensive mini-DV tapes, which I consider to be preferable to DVD media, but connectivity is limited to Firewire (not all computers support this) and it doesn't come with a remote a remote control. (I tried one from another model and found it doesn't 'see' it) I have owned a couple of other Samsung camcorders in the past - both bought off ebay as 'spares or repair (note to self - they don't seem especially robust) I was, however, able to get them working after an hour or so effort without buying spares. Having been reasonably assured by this I bought my latest Samsung camcorder in a similar state - but discovered that the ribbon cable for the display was broken. Whilst I'm pretty handy with a watchmakers screwdriver...

About as cheap as camcorders get

Advantages: Lightweight, inexpensive, plenty of spares on Ebay
Disadvantages: Tendancy to break down

...a hotshoe for accessories, video input, USB socket, memory stick and remote control. The power supply has a proprietary square-shaped connector, although genuine Samsung units can be had for about six quid on Ebay. Other cameras in the 35n range offer more features, such as remote control, memory stick slots and USB connectivity, but as I'm not interested in that, the absence isn't a great loss. My VP-D351 cost me about £25 - I bought a couple of 'spares or repair' units second hand, replaced the ribbon cable for the LCD screen, and transplanted the lens and sensor assembly to make one working unit. The one saving grace of the camcorder is the tape mechanism. As it's Mini-DV, new media is nearly always available at a reasonably low cost, to the extent that I no longer re-record tapes. Handy and inexpensive wee camcorder

Disadvantages: Mini DV, which isn't everyones choice

...Although mini-DV may not be everyone's first choice when it comes to selecting a camcorder format, the VP-D130 is a notable system. I have to admit I hadn't really made an active decision to acquire this particular camcorder model. I needed a basic unit to play a mini DV tape into my PC, and bought a partly functional unit on Ebay for about £20. Having done the tape copy, I gave it my usual 'half hour test' - where I pulled it to pieces, looking for any obvious faults, and try to put it together again. On this occasion, it came up trumps, although I have an attic full of partly assembled kit to prove I'm not as skilled as I'd like to believe I was! In this case it was a relatively straightforward case of freeing the solenoids in the camera unit, controlling the focus and zoom functions - this *may* be an inherent weakness...
