Samsung VP D381 - Simple On The Surface

Advantages: Good for everyday use, simple & small.
Disadvantages: Tapes only, needs firewire.

...Introduction I got this camcorder for Christmas 2008, and had been looking forward to opening it for some time. I quickly grew accustomed to it, and set it up, having bought some tapes off Ebay, and proceeded to spend the day pointlessly filming my family as they ate and my pets as they malled each other over a piece of turkey. SAMSUNG CAMCORDER RUBBISH DO NOT BUY VP-DC161

Advantages: NON
Disadvantages: Spent £350 for only 1 hour of footage

...Completely useless and Samsung far less than helpful when things Go wrong as were PC world not interested in either replacing or repairing mine even though I was told it had a two year guaruntee! The camera lasted for one and a half hours of recording and now does not work at all. Could not even finalise the disc that was in it when it packed up lost valuable footage of baby daughter. Bought another off e-bay if only to finalise the disc but it had the same fault only backlight came on and Nothing else at all! DO NOT BUY SAMSUNG VP-DC161 I have wasted over £350 to date and have now decided to write to the BBC Watchdog program as feel sure hundreds of people have bought this duff product from Samsung and it is high time they owned up to making a dud and provided replacement of refund....

Samsung an average camcorder

Advantages: Compact, convienient and fantastic picture quality
Disadvantages: Unreliable and poor customer service.

...Well it looks very nice and as with all Samsung products it seems to list a heap of fancy features that are on the leading edge of technology. Reliability: I have had this camcorder for almost 6 months and am sorry to say that it has just been sent for repair for the second time due to a manufacturing fault (The LCD screen died). So I am going to say not very reliable at all but this is to be expected with leading edge technology I guess. Ease of use: At first not very. I am quite good generally with electronics but found this confusing and had to sit and read through the manual before I could use this. Sound Quality: 7/10 not fantastic but acceptable if you are a reasonable distance from the camera. Features: Many fancy ones - most of which I probably wont use and missing some of the basic ones that I would look for in a camcorder...

Handy and inexpensive wee camcorder

Advantages: All the basic functions at a basic price
Disadvantages: Mini DV, which isn't everyones choice

A number of basic functions are available on the 'buttons' - fade-in, (time) display, backlight etc. More esoteric options are available from a 'thumbwheel' menu system, which is reasonably logical, although I tend to do most of my editing post-production on the PC rather than using the inbuilt stuff. Of particular interest to me is that you don't have to remove the camcorder from a tripod in order to swap tapes. The unit features 'image stabilisation' - which is handy if you use the digital zoom feature without a tripod (I'm not a great fan of this!) VP-D351 cheap, but insubstantial

Advantages: Inexpensive, light
Disadvantages: won''t stand up to hard wear and tear

...The VP-D351 is a basic no-frills camcorder of lightweight construction, read 'plasticy' In it's favour it uses inexpensive mini-DV tapes, which I consider to be preferable to DVD media, but connectivity is limited to Firewire (not all computers support this) and it doesn't come with a remote a remote control. (I tried one from another model and found it doesn't 'see' it) I have owned a couple of other Samsung camcorders in the past - both bought off ebay as 'spares or repair (note to self - they don't seem especially robust) I was, however, able to get them working after an hour or so effort without buying spares. Having been reasonably assured by this I bought my latest Samsung camcorder in a similar state - but discovered that the ribbon cable for the display was broken. Snap Happy Samsung!

Disadvantages: None at the price, you get a great item for what you pay!

...up to A1/A2 size, I would not notice the difference compared to a cheaper model with slightly less megapixels. Thus, I was directed towards the 10MP Samsung ES55. I had wanted something with excellent picture quality that I could use in low light conditions, taking pictures in clubs and indoors. I would also use the camera to take pictures for my business. But, more poignantly, I needed something cheap! I'm pretty broke and I had expected to fork out quite a lot for a quality camera to meet my requirements. I'm also quite interested in art, so as a hobby, had intended on taking up a bit of photography.
