...The Samsung LE-40F86BD is a fantastic TV. I use it with a Standard SKY+ box (i.e. not a SKY+HD model) and the picture is fantastic. As with all TVs using such a box, make suer you can sit at least 2 feet away from it. Sit too close and the picture will look extremely blocky. Due to the quality of the different channels, channels such as SKY ONE or National Geographic will look better (even in SD) than lesser funded channels. Use a regular DVD player and the picture is beautiful but use an upscaling one such as the Samsung HD870 and the picture is stunning. If only I had an HD DVD PLAYER! I've watched Cars with and without the HD Upscaler and I assure you, the upscaling does make a difference. ...Ill start by saying its a Great looking tv. i have owned this model now for around a year, really like most aspects of it. Its shiny black finish go with most modern equipment and oozes quality. Pros. Looks - quite minimal with just the round power button in the middle and a nice blue light when on stand-by Price (i got currys to price match internet @£750 1 year ago!) which is probably still a good price now HDMI connections (3 of) Sky HD, Upscaling DVD and PS3 all happy Picture- for normal tv its hard to beat cons Sound qualiy is good but its not very loud When watching sport (football or F1) there is a hesitancy on fast moving objects. Advantages: Upscaled DVDs look beautiful on Samsung TVs. DIVx playback is great.
Disadvantages: Slightly Slow to Startup. Remote control has no volume buttons for controlling Samsung TVs.

...A quick introduction to my setup. I own a Samsung LE40F86BDX (40" Glassy Screen LCD HDTV) and a Samsung LE23R87BDX (23" TFT Style LCD HDTV). The 40" has an HDMI input and the second has a DVI interface. When I purchased the 40" TV I found that my old Pioneer surround sound DVD player didn't give me a great picture always due to a few issues so, I bought the Samsung DVD-HD 870 player. The main features of the DVD player are, in addition to standard DVD playback, firstly, it's an upscaling player and secondly, it plays DIVx videos. On the 40" TV, I connected it using an HDMI to HDMI cable (available from play.com) to the TV. A connection like this will carry the audio and the video signals to the TV. ...This DVD player is the one that i have in my lounge and is a great one in my eyes and i think i will have it for years to come. It goes very well with my sony LCD HDready television and was very easy to set up and also very quick. It plays pretty much anything and has great quality and is very easy to use, i.e. the remote is very simple layout but with most features available. Plus this dvd player is also a great buy because it is under £100 and plays HD dvds and normal dvds which means it is much better pirced than most others.. If you dont already own a hd dvd player i would say that it is well worth getting on as they have awesome quality and are well worth the money in the long run!... Read review

...As soon as I heard about upscaling DVD players I discovered the Samsung HD860 was one of the latest models (2006). As I had purchased an HD compatible plasma it needed to have the best available source I could afford for the money and at £65 this slim and modern looking player was a bargain. The player will output a normal scart signal (composite or RGB) and via the HDMI lead upscale the signal to either 576p, 720p or 1080i respectively (only with an HD TV). What this means if that the clever chip within the box will take the normal 704x576 pixels of the DVD and increase them to near full hd resolution. The results can be simply stunning on a clean or new DVD, older DVD titles do not benefit as much as they contain more noise which does'nt help with the upscaling process. ...Well, I feel the need to weigh in on the defence! Firstly, everybody talks about the upscaling. It cannot perform miracles. Upscalings main purpose in life is to fill you new big screen. It will not improve the quality - in fact quite the opposite. In laymans terms, your DVD disc contains about 500 lines of information. Your nice shiney new HD TV can display 1080 lines. What to do? Basically, show each line twice (in simple terms). If you connect the Samsung to a standard def TV, the picture is very good and this is the only fair test. I don't see any of the other reviews mention picture calibration. If you want to get the best from your DVD player (any DVD player) you MUST calibrate it and the TV together. It is a fairly lengthy process and many/most people don't know about it. But you will never see your HD TV at its true potential... Read review

...Lovely tv, nainly with HD or DVD feed, not as good with standard definition but I guess that depends on the strength of the signal. The only draw back is the backlight bleed, it is noticeable in black pictures but can be a bit of a pain mainly if you are aware of it's presence. My wife did not notice it until I made her aware of it. Feed it with DVD or HD sources and it glows, the colours are extremely realistic (as long as you have the settings right) and the detail that the engine unveils is tremendous. I get a out of this world experience when I play games on my ps3. I would rate it 5 stars if it wasn't for the backlight bleed problem but I know that it is a common problem with the Sony and Samsung (they both share the same screen). I'll give a 4+.... ...It has taken me some time to move up to a HD LCD TV, and did a considerable amount of research on the subject. The one thing that sold me on the Polaroid was seeing it side by side with a 26" Samsung LCD in Currys. I made the sales person show me the same picture on both displays from a variety of sources, HD DVD, Digital TV and Analogue TV. I was really hard pushed to tell any difference, and the only thing I liked about the samsung was the frame, which hardly justified spending an extra £200... All in all, it has a great selection of inputs, an easy to use remote, fantastic picture quality (I have Sky+ plugged into it via scart, a games console, DVD player and Media Centre PC) and its not a bad looking piece of furniture.
