Samsung ML 1510 - laser printing for the home

Advantages: Very compact, fast speeds, excellent quality, Cheap

...-------------------- Laser printers use toners as opposed to catridges, its simply a powder based printing method as opposed to water based inks. Toner for the ML 1510 cost about £20 each and these will print well in excess of 5,000 pages each. You can also use the samsung toner saving application which supposedly reduces toner usage by up to 40%. But such modes really only be applicable to businesses, as im sure 5,000 print outs will be well enough for home use, you'll find yourself replacing the toner catridge little more than once a year. Another thing to consider with laser printers, is the drum unit. Drums need to be replaced every 20,000 or so pages, and cost more than the printer itself in some circumstances. I've never had to buy a new drum for the samsung yet however you can expect them to be in the £30 - £50 price range. ---------- Design...

Samsung ML 1510 Laser

Advantages: Small and easy to use
Disadvantages: Costs more to buy a new toner than the printer

...manufacturers are waiting for Vistas' release next year and as such would not work. The specs for the toner say it will print around 2000 pages before running out but the 1510 includes a Toner Saving Mode which helps to increase this a bit. Unlike an inkjet cartridge Tomer is actually a dry powder so it won't dry up if you don't use it within a year. It costs around £60 for a new toner which is more than the printer so it would seems more practical to get a whole new printer leading to the question - What do I do with it then? You can buy bottles of Toner refills from eBay for around £5 last time i looked, however Samsung along with many other manufacturers these days integrate the toner cartridge into the Drum unit which normally lasts 3 cartridge changes before failing so eventually you will have to change it whatever you decide. Oki toner cartridge - Professional, excellent quality printing.

Advantages: Professional quality. Simple to change, good colour
Disadvantages: Expensive, not sure if it is recyclable

...I have been using the Oki toner cartridges for apporximately 12 months. In my opinion the quality is fantastic, clear and precise. When a notice pops up telling me to replace the cartridge it can be ignored for quite a considerable time, even when running low on certain colours I have still found that the quality is good. When the time comes that the colour reproduction is not good enough then as long it is not for an important document I have found that by just simply removing the cartridge, shaking it about a bit and replacing it, it can bring the colour back to life and will add extra life to it.On the whole I feel it produces professional print quality. I think it is an expensive item but have not compared the longevity against an alternative product....

Laser printing on the cheap

Advantages: Robust and dependable with admirable longevity
Disadvantages: Slightly noisy on start-up

At the time she needed a reliable printer with a prodigious rate of output for all the essays and literary critiques, not to mention the dissertation. Previous to that we had used an Epson inkjet, but this cost us a lot of money with replacement cartridges as attempting to refill them was a messy experience and none-too-successful at that. Fab for lots of text printing!

Advantages: Far cheaper than an inkjet for black & white stuff

...This toner is designed for use with the HP Laserjet 1100 series printers. We have a number of these printers at the company I work for and so make use of these toners quite a lot. The toner is quoted as having a page life of 2,500 pages and retails at a price of around £40. The cartridge comes packaged in a large box with the toner type clearly labelled on the front, which is handy. The toner is secured within the box by two large cardboard holders and comes in package that closely resembles bin bag material! In Use This toner cartridge has been sensibly designed so as to make it a fairly easy process when removing an old toner and replacing with a new one. Review of HP 03A - toner cartridge (C3903A)

Excellent cheap laser printer

Advantages: Low initial Cost & Efficient in ink Use
Disadvantages: Expensive Toner

...with WIndows, Mac's and even Linux. Unfortunateley its USB but it's been fast enough for me. Another nifty feature is the auto-sensing manual sheet feed on the front of the printer. This takes in envelopes / alternative media such as transparencies (for which it is excellent). With Word's envelope feature I simply insert the envelope and the printer does the rest for me. No need to mess around with paper size settings on the driver either. The downfall is the fact that the toner cartridge is expensive (around £45). As a laser 'newbie' I'd no idea how this compared but a quick kelkoo search indicates that its around the low to mid range end of cartridge prices. My hand was forced as I was faced a long summer of job application and dissertation writing; and my vintage Canon BJC 4300 ink-jet printer became: 1. Financially unsustainable ? The amount of material I am printing would have forced me to spend literally hundreds of pounds on cartridges. 2. Frustratingly unreliable ?
