Groundhog Day in San Antonio

Advantages: Great city, plenty to do, see and eat
Disadvantages: Go in season

...Remember the Alamo? Your not kidding, I couldn?t forget it. I walked past it at the same time every morning and night for a week - and a couple of times more for good measure. Not that I should, or want, to paint San Antonio in a bad picture - far from it, its my favourite North American city. Its just a week is perhaps a little too long off season. I will explain. We decided to take our trip to the States (a week in San Antonio for sightseeing and then a few days in Florida to top up the tan) for the first week in November. The reason - the flights are miles cheaper than October. The reason for this - most America's tourism seems to shut down on the night of October the 31st. I would love for the sake of my hands and your eyes to make this a quick review but this just wouldn?t do San Antonio justice - so lets crack on in with this...

Hotel Tropical - Ibiza, San Antonio

Advantages: Great Location, Clean, Nice Rooms, Half Board Hotel
Disadvantages: Expect Noise - 18-30 hotel

P*ss-up Park

Advantages: Located right next to the beach and all amenities. pretty clean
Disadvantages: hot, noisy and uncomfortable

...Before I start I have to warn people that the pictures are misleading! The pool is actually on the roof on a main road, doesn?t look like it thought does it? I never managed to get near the pool was too busy. We stayed at this hotel as part of an allocation on arrival deal, therefore were expecting the worse. This wasn?t the worse but it certainly didn?t thrill me either. Being in San Antonio in July I was disappointed to discover this hotel does not have air conditioning in the rooms, and as reception was always very busy I do not know if there are units which can be rented. We chose to buy a cheap fan at a nearby supermarket. The room was very basic, simply bed, table and wardrobe although the bathroom was a fairly good size. There were a few other issues during the week we stayed which I did not find satisfactory; on one...

Don't go if you like to sleep a lot

Advantages: Good location, cheap food/drinks, good facilities, nice pool
Disadvantages: Very noisy

...Cheap no frills hotel catering for the 18-30 crowd. Brisa is used mainly by British tourists and is NOT family friendly due to the constant noise, music and swearing! Saying that the whole resort of San Antonio is not family friendly so it's no wonder that very few hotels here cater for families. The hotel is conveniently located about a 15 minute walk from the west end where most of the bars and shops are and also equal distance from the more upmarket (and expensive) sunset strip of bars and restaurants (Cafe Del Mar, Mambo etc). It is situated in a residential area and is about a 20 minute drive from the airport. The surrounding area is pretty quiet but the hotel itself is not! The noise would have to be my main criticism of this hotel - it was constant. Whether it's the music pumping out from the poolside bar or the shouting...

As it was such a long way to travel I thought it would be a good idea to add on a few days holiday to explore the area with a friend who was coming along. Getting There There are direct flights to San Diego from London however at the time these were three times as expensive as a fare with stopovers in the US and with a friend coming I wanted our flights to be as cheap as possible. Our flights went from Heathrow to Washington where we changed planes for a flight to Chicago and then another change for a plane to LA, where we got our final plane to San Diego. This may seem too much for some, but for me it was great as the plane changing gave me a chance to stretch my legs. I think I would have found 13 hours cooped up in a plane too much!
