...I lived In Costa Rica for 6 years and I spent most of my time in the capital, San jose, which is what I am writing about now. The city itslef is quite small for a capital city but it makes it easyto navigate (up to a point!!). San Jose is located right in the middle of the country in what is called the 'central valley' although it isn't actually a valley. The airport is in the north west of the city, actually outside San Jose. Actually most of the decent hotels are outside the center too. I cannot really recommend and as I have not really used one but I did stay in the Hampton Inn once and it was fine. Taxis Use them, they are cheap. The Beautiful Girl and the Penis Bowl

Advantages: Good weather. And some different ice creams.
Disadvantages: Not much else

......now there's a fairytale title you never hear. I like city breaks, I really do. Thus, I decided to tag a few days in San Jose onto the beginning and end of my Costa Rican tour. In total I spent 6 nights there, but only really 4 days due to flight times and travelling towards Arenal and back from the beach. This is still about 3 and a half days more than most people told me I would need, but I ignored them nonetheless, convinced that any capital city would have a fair few things to keep me entertained. GETTING THERE AND AROUND I arrived at 1am into San Jose airport which is about half an hour and $20 (US) from the centre. This is a description of one of the best bays/beaches we found and a good coastal walk. We used the tourist hiking map Capo de Gata-Nijar (1:50.000 same scale as an standard OS map here) which we bought from the tourist information in San José, it comes with an accompanying book about the routes marked on the map. It also contained information about camping, apartments and other local information in Spanish. Dearly beloved can read some Spanish and I found I could follow a lot of the instructions fairly simply, you may be able to get an English copy. What state of mind thought of this one...???

Advantages: 5 for £10.00 deal for 4 nights at blockbusters... so i didn't feel too ripped off
Disadvantages: dull, boring, tedious, un-thrilling (if that's a word), and drawn out.

Sunny San Diego

Advantages: Gorgeous scenery, sunshine
Disadvantages: transport links

..., the automotive museum and the aerospace museum and gardens as well as San Diego Zoo. The parks Spanish architecture is gorgeous and reminded me of a recent visit to southern spain. This is worth a visit even if you don't intend to visit the museums. I'm not a huge museum fan and so decided to skip this and instead spend the time roaming the gardens (some of which have an entry charge of around $3). I would particularly recommend the Alcazar gardens modelled on some of the gardens in Southern spain and the Desert Garden with it's interesting variety of cacti. I also recommend visiting the zoo famous for its conservation work. 3. Old Town State Park This is like a mini mexico with cute little markets selling crafts and some decent Mexican restaurants. 4. Sea World This is great for a visit if you have kids to see the star of the place...

a small city but a lively city

...San Jose is a wonderful place, great scenery and lots of colour. There are many attractions. My personal favourite was the La Paz Waterfall gardens. It?s a series of trails through the forest to the waterfall. Lots of greenery, and very refreshing walking through the forest. The waterfall is a great place to take your pictures. There is also an orchid garden and a butterfly garden. I didn?t quite like the orchid gardens, but the butterfly garden was amazing. I never really noticed how many different types of butterflys there were, and how colourful they are. But, just to let you know, it can be slightly annoying, as the butterflys are constantly flying over your head. If you?re lucky you may get to see butterfly eggs. There is an admission fee. The average lunch will cost about £5 in one of the large cafeteria style restaurant...
