Each map is laminated, so waterproof and tear-resistant, and highlights the publishers' recommendations of five best choices in five categories: adventure, culture, food, nature and sights. On one side is a road map with icons highlighting numerous places of interest, including campsites and youth hostels, sport and recreational facilities, marinas and beaches, architectural and historical sites, etc. The maps have no geographical coordinates. Most titles also include a small street plan of the central area in the main town. The map and, if appropriate, the street plan are annotated with colour-coded markers highlighting the publishers' recommendations of five best choices in five categories: adventure, culture, food, nature and sights, all listed on the reverse of the map with brief notes in several languages. The map divides the island east/west with a good overlap between the sides and has contours with relief shading, spot heights and plenty of names of geographical features to show the island's topography. Major roads clearly numbered, with motorway junctions prominently named. Scenic routes are highlighted and locations of petrol stations and services are marked. A selection of hiking trails is also highlighted, with symbols marking various places of interest, including beaches, campsites and mountain refuges, etc. For GPS users the map has a UTM grid and margin ticks at 2' showing latitude and longitude. Map legend includes English. Place names are in clear print, larger than used on most maps. A separate booklet attached to the map cover has an index which shows all locations with their postcodes and GPS coordinates. The Canary Island of La Palma offers a combination of interesting, varied walking in scenery that can be gently semi-rural or impressively rugged, from volcanic desert to jungly forest, without the over-touristification that affects Tenerife and Gran Canaria. The book contains 16 routes based on walking from, or catching buses from, the popular east coast resort of Los Cancajos - though the routes are also practical from nearby Santa Cruz. They would also be possible from Los Llanos, though usually with an extra 30-60 minute bus journey at either end of the day. The walk routes vary, from comfortable tours that are never more than 25 minutes away from a café, to energetic gorge crossings with considerable ascent and descent. A must visit attraction if you holiday on Tenerife
Advantages: The cleanest animal park you will ever visit
Disadvantages: May be difficult for people with limited mobility
...expensive. But, after a day at Loro Parque we decided the entry fee was more than worth it.
There is a land train that takes visitors who are either staying in or visiting Santa Cruz to the park. When we were there a year ago it was free but I don't know whether it still is.
