...Santos de Cartier was introduced in 1981 and named in honour of Alberto Santos Dumont a pioneer in aviation. Considered by many to be the true father of  flight, Dumont was a friend of Louis Cartier and it was at his friends request that Louis invented the wristwatch, so that he could keep his hands on the controls while checking the time. Santos comes in a very smart silver coloured box and the bottle is a dark brown glass with silvered mountings.Altogether very smart and chic. The fragrance is a blend of lavender, basil, bergamot, nutmeg, cumin, juniper, sandalwood, cedar wood, patchouli and vetiver all pretty much standard ingredients for a mans fragrance but notable for the number used and the skill with which they are combined. Espirito Santo - Rock solid Brasilian welcome

Advantages: Garden State, Breathtaking Scenery, Stunning beaches, Vibrant Cities
Disadvantages: As with most of Brasil, long distances between places, no rail network

...Heres an update for the state of Espirito Santo (ES) so that people don't get the wrong idea about this part of Brasil. Vitoria - the Capilal and the largest city in the state - a vibrant city and port on the coast. Airport links directly from Rio De Janeiro. Beach OK but sea could be better actually on the city waterfront. However, excellent beaches to be found at Vila Velha a short ride to the North of the city. Vibrant nightlife with plenty of bars, nihgtclubs and restaurants. Convento da Penha is a marvellous church on a large hill overlooking Vitoria. Breathtaking views of the city and well worth the trip. Culturally, there are plenty of Art galleries and museums to keep you happy if this is your thing. As with most cities - watch the traffic and keep your valuables close to you. Common sense prevails! Beaches - resort...

Santo Domingo

Advantages: Eating yourself to bursting point in the fully inclusive hotels
Disadvantages: Not much to do and rip off prices

...My husband and I were really looking forward to wandering round local markets and picking up unusual souvenirs in the Dominican Republic but, unfortunately, holidays in the Dominican Republic are not for people who want to travel around and experience the country for themselves. We were in an all inclusive, which was just as well, because there was nowhere to go outside the hotel complex. The complex itself was lovely and there were only 2 hours in the day when you couldn't get food (2pm-4pm) which was brilliant. The trips on offer were pretty expensive which meant we couldn't really afford to do many and, if you wanted to hire a taxi you had to find a couple of other folk to go with you as the taxis were really people carriers and it was approximately £50 to hire them for a couple of hours to go to the nearby city of Santo...

A Strange Catalan Pianist

...Southampton University has an excellent small concert hall; my wife and I go there several times a year, mostly to piano recitals as we are both amateur pianists. The artists are usually well known and the events are fully booked. Some time ago the programme gave the name of a pianist we didn?t recognise, Carles Santos, and we bought tickets. The first surprise was that the audience was only about twenty, dotted around in small groups. This was most unusual! Carles came on stage, seated himself at the grand piano and started to perform. He played scales, arpeggios and chords in random sequences and random keys, played chunks of notes with his arms, hands and fists, all done in strange exotic rhythms. São Salvador da Baía de Todos os Santos

Advantages: Nicely restored tourist friendly old town

A bit boring

...Espirito Santo is the name of a State north of Rio. The capital, Victoria, is one of the ugliest memories I have of Brazil. Enough said. Marataizes, a bit further up on the coast, is a cheap beach resort for Mineiros, the inhabitants of Minas Gerais. I went there at the beginning of my visit to Brazil, when I did not have an idea of other beaches in Brazil. With hindsight, the beach is not really worth the effort of going there. However, Marataizes makes an interesting visit for those who have time and interest in the life of ?real Brazilians?. I did not meet any foreigners, and, even amongst the Brazilian there, I did not strike acquantaince with anyone, fairly unusual for Brazilian standards. It is really a cheap place for middle class families....

Incredible Diving

...I was in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic in February and was amazed by the diving there. Along the South side of D.R. there is a reef that extends the entire the length of the island and further into the ocean. The Snorkelling is even good because the reef is only 50 feet away from shore. The caribean fish are absolutely amazing with such a sensation of peace and surrealism. When your down there, nothing crosses your mind except the beauty of your surroundings, the fish swimming through your fingers, the massiveness of the reef, and the calmness of it all. If you are in Santo Domingo, spend the money to learn to dive and get out there and experience the thrill of your lifetime....

Review of Santo Domingo (Dive Sites)

Lliebeig, Santo Thomas, Minorca

Advantages: Large well equipt appartments in a central position close to all ammenities.
Disadvantages: A little noisy if you are near the main road.

...A nice well appointed complex of low rise appartments along the main road of Santo Thomas. Our accomodation comprised of 2 bedrooms, bathroom, lounge (of a good size inc. TV) and a large open-plan kitchen. There was a full size fridge/freezer and a microwave as well as normal oven (all very efficient). The appartment also had air-con as well as heating which was good in case of cooler times of the year. There is a large pool which is cental to the appartments with a pool-side bar serving cool drinks, ices and snacks. Be quick if you want a lounger though! On the opposite side of the road are the large high-rise hotels, so the view is as you would expect, but a short walk between the hotels takes you to a path which seems to run for miles along the coast where you can easily gain access to the beach which is lovely and sandy, and very...
