Railways of Italy Dvd. If a filming project could ever be described as a romantic marathon this 'Italian Job' was certainly that. 7,000 miles in seven weeks took our film crew from the Brenner and Simplon Passes to the very tip of Sicily and back through Sardinia, Milan, Florence, Rome, Pisa, Bari, Catania and Cagliari are all included with some of the famous sights which provide such a backcloth to Italian Railways. Lines of very different character circumnavigate Vesuvius and Etna. Railways cling to the Adriatic and Tirreno coastlines. The very latest standard gauge trains jostle for space on the screen with narrow gauge vehicles of great charm and antiquity. From its beginnings in 1839 Italian railways developed as a hotchpotch of private companies. The Italian State Railways were formed in 1905 and the new organisation rapidly began to pioneer three-phase electrification, the remnants of which are visible today. Some of what was shot for this programme just three years ago has been swept away by the process of modernisation so this is already a dvd of historical significance. Whilst the ancient is pandered to the modern is not forgotten. The high speed train with a tilting device, the 'Pendolino' makes its appearance as does the 'Gotthardo' and the 'Settebello'. It is the extraordinary private railways which add so much to the programme. It is impossible to mention them all but the selection includes the grandly named 'La Ferroviaria Italiana' which has just eight-four kilometres of track, the narrow gauge Ferrovie del Sud Est, the rack railway from Catanzaro to Cosenza, the amazing Ferrovie Pedane and the wonderful railways of Sicily and Sardinia. The narrow gauge line around Etna is worth a programme on its own and the tiny railcars which ply the 324 kilometres of the Ferrovie Complementari della Sardegna scuttle along through stunning scenery. Late Sun In The Real Sardinia...

Sea and Sardinia
Advantages: beautiful
Disadvantages: it's not a white spot on the map any more
...I should warn you: this is the longest opinion I've written so far. A double espresso beside your computer might help you to get through the reading. Not a cup of tea, we're going to coffee country! In case you think of going to Sardinia or any other Italian region one day, forget about tea altogether. Only a masochist would order tea in an Italian bar (as only an Italian masochist would order...

The archeological town of Nora, South Sardinia
Advantages: archeological site, culture, sunny beach, shops, nice food
Disadvantages: none
...Nora is a beautiful small touristic village belonging to the district of Pula (Cagliari, South Sardinia) and it's famous mainly for its Punic-Roman ruins. But archeological finds like the "Temple of Tanit", ceramics and the ruins of a nuraghe on the outskirts, just prove that Nora was already inhabited in the era of the nuraghi, long before the Phoenicians and the Romans...
