This review, I'm afraid, comes four years too late, as the Saxo went out of production in the year 2000. It has since been replaced by a more 21st century, bubble-like car, the C3. There no question that the C3 is the nicer of the two, with its chic French curves, however at £9.000 it's not to everyone's liking. And so we come to the humble Saxo. Weighing in at 805kg the Saxo is very small, so obviously would not be suitable for big families, or indeed for people with big legs which invariably get crushed if they sit in the back seats. Citoren Saxo VTR

Advantages: Speed,Comfort,Looks,Drive

...I have had a Citroen Saxo VTR now for 9 months, which I have enjoyed every minute of. The car itself on looks, in my view is amazing, the Mark 2 version which I own has more curved headlights than the Mark 1 version with more rectangular shaped lights, personally I prefer the former. The poseidon blue paintwork shines very well in sunlight, and is very eye catching. The interior is a bit tacky and very rattly at times, especially driving along uneven roads. The rattle does get annoying at times, but with the car's sound system at a moderate volume you do not notice it at all! The seats of the Saxo look like they've come straight out of the 80's, the Peugeot 106 leather seats would have been a lot better option for the car. Saxo 1.1 Forte

Advantages: nimble with good performance for its engine size, fun handling
Disadvantages: Steering takes getting used to, basic interior, basic equipment

...Before I carry on with the review, I must confess to being a French car enthusiast, previously owning 205 and 309 models. I drive a Mini One and a classic Escort amongst other cars. However, I will try not to let this colour my writing on this particular car - which is owned by my girlfriend. The Saxo is the last in a line of lightwieght compact and fun french hatchbacks, which in many ways started with the 205 design and include the 106, and AX and 309. They all had a similar shell construction and mechanical layout. The 106 shares its shell with the saxo along with torsion bar rear suspension which gives the car a nice supple ride for its size. My little Saxo Desire

Advantages: Excellent price, cheap to run, nice looking, added extras in the Desire model.
Disadvantages: You get what you pay for.

I opted to buy a Citroen Saxo Desire 1.1i three door hatchback. I bought this car from new in 1997 (P reg.) and still have it four years later. I have managed to eke out 110 mph out of this little baby, but I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone as I felt a little unsafe in such a small car going so fast. This car cost me just over £8,000 pounds with some added extras like an alarm and basic trim fittings, however now that prices have gone down I could have got the car for at least £500 cheaper. Saxo VTR - Nippy Little Hatchback

Advantages: Cheap to buy, low insurane, quite nippy
Disadvantages: Not as quick as the VTS, No electric Mirrors

...I have a 1.4 and a VTS model of saxo but did recently testdrive the later 98bhp model The Good Points Its has a brilliant insurance group think its a 6 or 7 compared to the 16v VTS which is a group 14, ideal for younger drivers. More econimical than the VTS so won't be at all bad if they are thrashed. Styling is up to date with a phase lift model after 1999/2000, has the good looking body kit that the sports models have. Nice subtle alloy wheels. Handling is brilliant, the perfect car for having a play down the country lane twisty roads, will grip the road really well with the right tyres on. Cheap and cheerful car- Saxo is reliable and economic.

Advantages: Very economical to run, responsive, handles well, fits into tight parking spaces.
Disadvantages: No central locking, can be uncomfortable on long distances.

Saxo VTR pocket rocket that kept stalling!

...I purchased a citroen saxo last year and having driven a citreon AX previous to that I am very impressed by the performance of this car. Not only is it easy on fuel but it is also nice to drive. I often find that I am driving much faster than I think. At its current price this car is an execellent buy for any driver- young or old. I have also had few maintenance problems with it in comparison to new cars that friends and family purchased at the same time. Excellent value for money. I will definitely buy a citreon car next time around....
