Not the fatest, but quality
Review of Agfa SnapScan 1212p by the_king

Advantages: great high quality scans
Disadvantages: parallel port connection and average speed.

...When my old scanner broke, I went out looking for a reasonably priced scanner that delivers good quality scans. The scanner requires a parallel port, so that you plug it into the port that your printer would normally be plugged into. But don't worry you can still use your printer, the scanner has two ports in the back of it, one to the PC and then one to your printer. It is also easy to install and it has a very clear instruction book that explains everything easily. Even for a non-computer literate person, it shouldn't be too hard. All though not the faster of all scanners, it still scans at an average rate. Of course what you are scanning effects the time, and also at what resolution you are scanning at. Obviously the bigger the picture and the higher the resolution, the longer the image takes to scan. I normally scan at 600 DPI... Read review

Scanning for dummies
Review of Agfa SnapScan 1212p by Manunited

Advantages: Good price and good functionality
Disadvantages: The scanner must be on when you boot up your computer if you've got Windows 95

...'ve said the SNAPSCAN 1212 is just a standard scanner, but at a good competitive price. The benifits of this scanner include the user friendly, processional software that comes with the scanner to scan and modify your pictures. I bought it just for this reason. One thing I have against this parallel port version is the fact that if its not turned on when you boot up your computer it will not work until you boot up the computer with the scanner turned on. So if you didn't have it turned on when you booted up and you decide you want to scan something you have to restart the computer with it turned before the software will let you scan. I think this problem applies to Windows 95 users only!... Read review

Artec AS6E
Review of Artec AS6E by Batch

Advantages: Very fast scanning
Disadvantages: Previews and actual scannings mess up sometimes

...This scanner is able to do its job of scanning documents, pictures or almost anything else to computer or to print it out as like a photocopier. The scanner software is easy to use, but the problem is that the software included sometimes messes up the scanning previews and the actual scanning of documents you try to scan. This is only occasional though so it is fine to put up with it. On Viewstation AS6E, you can scan it to a number of destinations:- Applications, File, Printer, E-mail, Fax Machine and the copy/paste clipboard. You can change the colour mode of the scanning you want to do. You can scan it in true colours, grey or in line art. There's also a set of filters you may set it to scan on - True grey, red, green or blue. You can also change the resolution, brightness and contrast of the scanning, image effects, and also... Cheap, good and reliable
Review of HP ScanJet 5370C by the_man_from_del_monte

Advantages: Easy to use
Disadvantages: Dust under the scanning glass

...Whats In The Box In the large box you get manuals, which are easy to use along with all the cables and software you need. Obviously there is a scanner in there and there is also a little box type thing which is used for scanning negatives, this is a nice addition to the package. Connectivity The scanner can be connected to your computer either by a USB cable or a parrel port, all cables are included. Installation A CD is provided that provides you with the scanning software and it only takes a couple of minutes to install. Specs The scanner is quite curvy and looks modern it is made of grey plastic and has a scanning window size of just over A4. On the top of the scanner is the HP logo along with the model number. On the front of the scanner is a pannel that has four blue buttons on. They are used as shortcuts to scan, fax... Read review

Sexy Canon. Scan Me Baby!
Review of Canon CanoScan N1240U by perera

Advantages: Slim, Sleak, Sexy Design
Disadvantages: Weak Glass Scanner Screen

.... The Copy button sends scanned data straight to the printer. The E-Mail button sends scanned data to a new e-mail message. The whole scanner package does come with 2 CD's full of software to use and help you scan and edit your images or text documents, however, I usually use my own scanning software as I am used to that. It is connected by a USB cable to the computer or laptop so it can just be plugged in even when the computer has already been started up and does NOT require an additional power cable! It is fast at scanning and only makes a little noise. It scans at 1200 x 2400dpi which is very good. The picture quality is superb. The scanner has been on the market for over a year now but is still very good in relation to the competition and its pricing is fair. I did break the glass of my CanoScan once by accidentally dropping... Read review

Extremely capable affordable scanner
Review of Epson Perfection 4990 Photo by u08mcb

Advantages: Relatively fast, Dust removal works, Quality equal to dedicated film scanners, Dmax of 4
Disadvantages: Power hungry, occasional mis-scans, only 8 35mm slides scanned at once

...able to scan 12 35mm frames at once and apparently faster dust removal technology. Very occasionally the scanner will completely fail to scan a frame or will only partially scan. This is annoying if you have simply left it to scan without necessarily checking and find you must re-scan but it is mercifully not a common occurrence. I found I had to plug this scanner in to its own socket in the wall as it was sometimes not starting up correctly when plugged into a powerbar (My PC uses a 480W power supply) so be aware of this too. For me the explicitly labelled Dmax of 4 compared to Canon's reluctance to divulge this information (though allegedly it is around 3.8) was enough to swing it for me and I have not been disappointed.... Looking for a scanner buy this one
Review of Canon CanoScan N650U by WORLDOFADSL

Advantages: LOW LOW COST
Disadvantages: CANT SCAN 3D OBJECTS

...to have it. It does a much better job of descreening magazine photos than my old Compag scanner, in fact it does everything better. Because it is a CIS scanner, you cannot scan 3D objects. If you have no need for 3D scanning, then this is no weakness. If you want to take advantage of high resolution scans of 8x10 photos, 64MB of RAM is not enough for fast scans, so you will need a much more capable computer than most people who buy this scanner will probably have. Recommend 128MB of RAM minimum for that purpose. This scanner will have you going for quality scans! The 32MB RAM minimum that is recommended is only sufficient for 4x6 photos if scanning at 300dpi color.... Read review

Canon LiDE 35 Scanner
Review of Canon CanoScan LiDE 35 by derek-j-a

Advantages: lightweight, fast and easy to set up and use. nice slimline design.
Disadvantages: None that I have found

...program so I can scan photos directly into it from the menu. But I found the quality of the scans were so good I did not need to alter them, only if I wanted them bigger or smaller. But if you don't have any photographic software on your computer, there is no need to worry because the LiDE35 comes with a copy of ArcSoft Photostudio, which is quite good. I had not long fitted a USB2 port into my computer, so on first using the Canon, I was as happy as a pig in the old what-you-call-it when I scanned my first photograph. It was so fast and quiet compared to my old Agfa. I then loaded the OmniPage program from the installation CD that enables the scanning of text documents directly in Word. When doing this, as with all text scanners, I needed to read through the scanned documents carefully because some letters was not recognised, especially... Read review

Good 4 Photography
Review of Canon CanoScan LiDE 80 by mf2spurs

Advantages: Simple
Disadvantages: Not Many

...I have used this for 3 years during my Graphics degree. I found it helpful to scan not only pictures but you can also scan negatives with a great result in quality. It is helpful as it powers it self through the USB cable so no extra plugs sockets needed around your computer. I have been using it with my mac computer and at first I only had one problem which was that on installing it loaded it self in to the OS 9version and I was running the OX 10 version. So when I used photoshop I had to scan in Os 9 and then open it up in photoshop which was a slow process. But if you are using it for the same reason there is a legal crack on the canon site which I got and it solved the problem. All in all I have found the end result of using this product excellent. And a key design is that it can stand on its side to save space and it can even... Read review

Free online Virus Scan - Trend PC-cillin
Review of PC-cillin Complete package by vinodgm

Advantages: Free, updated, monthly e-mails with latest updates
Disadvantages: None

...I recently tried Trend PC-cillin and I must admit I was impressed. They have a free online virus scan that they call “Housecall” Just visit their site at: http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/startpcc.asp and select your country. Then press “Scan Now” and your computer is scanned completely and thoroughly for all those unwanted viruses. The length of time for the scan would depend on the amount of files your computer has, naturally, but mine took about twenty minutes. Any virus detected is automatically cleaned and if it cannot be cleaned it gives you a full explaination of exactly what you must do to clean it yourself. They also give you the full history on each virus detected and the risk level and files that are usually affected by the particular virus. I have tried other free scans previously... Read review
