Come to the Battle
Advantages: Entertaining, nice flora and fauna, near to the beach, not over developed
Disadvantages: None for me
...I was interested recently to discover that Scarborough is thought to be the first 'Seaside Resort' in England. I was also surpirsed to hear that the South Bay was the original resort. Over the last 40 years or so it has been North Bay that has experienced more development. Scarborough is a large resort situated on the North East Coast of Yorkshire. One of the attractions I have fond memories of,from my childhood to today is Peasholm Park which is situated in the South Bay.
If you are visiting Scarborough for the day Peasholm Park is within walking distance from the train and bus station but it is a fair way. There is an open top double decker bus service which will take you along the seafront from South to North Bay and back again. It is reasonably priced but the upstairs, open top, is only for really sunny days. Scarborough seafront...

A little bit of the Orient in Scarborough
Advantages: Plenty of recreational land, free to visit
Disadvantages: Can get very busy at times
...Peasholm Park is a large public park located in the North Bay area of the East Yorkshire resort of Scarborough. It is not just the largest park in the town it is also the oldest public recreation area and over the years it has become a major tourist attraction, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. Peasholm Park is clearly sign-posted from almost everywhere within Scarborough so it is never hard to find no matter whereabouts you are.
Despite dozens of visits to Scarborough over the years I visited here for the very first time only recently. The first thing that I noted was that this is effectively two different parks, separated by a main road, the A165 known locally as Burniston Road. The park to the east of this road that extends to the coast is the smaller of the two halves and the first part of Peasholm Park...

May you stay at the May Nard?
Advantages: Great, family friendly, comfortable Hotel
Disadvantages: No digital TV
...Last weekend, my Mum and Step-Dad had to attend a wedding up in Scarborough. For some reason, they didn?t really want to leave me and my younger brother at home, possibly for fear of wild parties or something, so we went up to Scarborough for the weekend too.
Due to her rather poor organisation, she did wait until about 2 weeks before we were going to bother booking a Hotel, we tried a variety of them, some to expensive, many fully booked, until she found one called ?The Maynard Hotel?, located close to the south bay in Scarborough. I think it cost £230 in total, and that was for two nights, and two rooms ? so very decent price indeed for the four of us ? and it included breakfast!
Location
The Maynard Hotel is located down near the South Bay, which means all the amusements and sea front bits are just a short walk away. It is...

Ahhh! Yorkshire
Advantages: Can use just one. Authentic taste
Disadvantages: Not really big enough for my liking and not the same as home-made!
...Having a fussy eater as a son means that I've become a little more "experimental" in the food that's available in the house. In desperation I've tried products that I wouldn't have dreamed of buying before having children. Sometimes this is just to offer variety, other times it's for convenience.
Yorkshire puds have to be one of the easiest things to make. There's nothing fancy in the batter and, when you're cooking a roast it's no hassle to slip a tray in the top oven. However, upon discovering that my son actually liked these and having had little success in freezing home-made pies I decided to try some of the ready-made versions so that, when offering my son a roast mid-week (made from a roast that my husband and I have most likely shared the night before) I can also offer a pud alongside.

The Forbidden Corner; Disneyland, Yorkshire
Advantages: Lots of fun and adventure
Disadvantages: could be in trouble if you have a week bladder
...***Please note my review is of a specific attraction "The Forbidden Corner" in North Yorkshire and not a review on Yorkshire as a whole. I have posted the review here for now as there seems to be a hitch with the product listing***
I was first made aware of The Forbidden Corner after my brother and his girlfriend returned following a visit one day this summer. They seemed incredibly mesmerised by the place, however, upon probing them for a detailed explanation of exactly what The Forbidden Corner was I was delivered only excited remarks about clues & riddles, secret passages and sleeping giants. The word enchanting was overused to an unnatural extent in their accounts, and after both failing miserably to provide me with a concrete answer they just suggested it was probably best if I visit the place for myself.

A nice Yorkshire beach
Advantages: Good quality bathing
Disadvantages: No facilities on beach
...and less commercialised than most of the other East Yorkshire resorts.
The beach is very clean but it isn't composed of fine golden sand. Instead the sand has a more muddy texture to it but it is still ideal to sit on without getting caked in mud. There are lots of rocks and small pools making it an ideal place to search for crabs and shrimps and there are several small caves cut into the rocks. It is very flat, although the road down to the beach is steep and there are plenty of pay and display car parking spaces along the sea front.
At the far northern end of the beach is Filey Brigg, a natural rocky peninsula that juts out into the sea. This area is a nature reserve and it is possible to walk right to its tip.
This whole stretch of coastline from Scarborough to the north and Bridlington to the south is one of my favourite places in...

Yorkshire Tea - Pricey but Nicey
Advantages: Yorkshire Gold is the Best
Disadvantages: overpriced
...Yorkshire tea for Yorkshire water, that is what they used to say on the advert, for Yorkshire folk, as well I think. The advert was a load of twaddle, but I must say I do like the tea, coming from Yorkshire I suppose I ought to if the advert is to be believed.
There are three varieties of Yorkshire tea, they are the ordinary Yorkshire tea, Yorkshire tea for hard water areas (anywhere south of Yorkshire maybe) and Yorkshire Gold the premium tea just that bit more special, and a bit more expensive.
The first is regular Yorkshire tea, personally I do not like it, it has no real flavour no body no after taste, fullness, you name it, its really not worth the money, and even the ordinary tea is a bit more expensive than other everyday tea bag teas like Tetley, PG tips, Ty-phoo and the like. It is disappointingly flat and un refreshing...

Culture in Yorkshire
Advantages: Good exhibits, easy to get to
Disadvantages: None
...interesting to walk around the park and view the sculptures; some said more to me than others. If you are in the area I would recommend a visit. Unfortunately due to traffic and our desire to continue on our journey we did not spend long enough to absorb and see all of the exhibits, we will have to visit another time when we go up north.
There are courses and classes run here for adults and children to explore and experience art. If you are interested in the Yorkshire sculpture park go to http://www.ysp.co.uk/view.aspx?id=3. Where there is information on what's going on currently

'Ard Water, Not With Yorkshire Tea!
Advantages: Smells and Tastes Great
Disadvantages: Bit Pricey With An Aftertaste Some May Not Like
...Amongst the dreaded bills in today's post was a small white jiffy bag. Like a child in a sweet shop it had to be opened first, mainly because I couldn't remember what freebie I'd ordered! Inside was a green box containing Yorkshire Tea bags, not just any tea bag but Taylors of Harrogate's special blend for hard water and ten of them at that.
Pictures of rural Yorkshire adorn the box and for a few moments memories came flooding back to me. I was born 11 miles from Harrogate and the pictures returned me to the countryside I played in as a child. I was also reminded of trips with my grandparents to Harrogate market where after a busy morning, my Gran took me to Betty's Tea Rooms (part of the Taylors empire) while my Grandad sampled more than his share of Yorkshire ale. Such was the impression the box made on me.
Right that's memory...

Yorkshire's White Horse
Advantages: Interesting to see, nice setting
Disadvantages: Only dates from 19th century
...For many years my brother lived in Wiltshire under the shadow of a white horse carved into the limestone hillside above Westbury. I was always fascinated by this figure so when I discovered that there was a similar white horse in North Yorkshire within a day trip of where I live it became a place that I wanted to see.
There are many examples of figures of horses cut into the landscape in England but in northern England they are quite rare and the one at Kilburn in North Yorkshire is the most northerly such example in Britain. The practice of carving white horses and occasionally other figures into the landscape dates back to prehistoric times, the reasons behind their creation vary but many have religious origins. There is even an official name for the creation and study of these horses called "leucippotomy".
